Mukul Dev, When Filmistan Abandons A Good Actor
Image
The late Mukul Dev, model-actor Rahul Dev’s elder brother made his debut alongside Sushmita Sen as a leading man in Vikram Bhatt’s Dastak 29 years ago. Then Mukul lost his way in a maze of forgettable films.

No one seemed to notice how he held the screen in Girish Malik’s Jal and Samir Karnik’s Yamla Pagla Deewana.

All but lost to show-world, Mukul Dev made an impressive comeback in Ashwin Dheer’s Son Of Sardaar, where he was a scream as a clunk, a goofy dimwitted cousin in Sanjay Dutt’s family. Though not a pivotal role, it has fetched Mukul enough praise to get him noticed by his first director.

Mukul was then signed to play the main antagonist in Vikram Bhatt’s Bhaag Johnny. Mukul was to play a Pakistani cop. And since Pakistani cops dress, speak, and behave differently from their Indian counterparts, producer...

India’s ‘Mahamantra’ Bridges Ancient Wisdom and Modern Crisis, Teaser Unveiled
Image
In an era where global upheaval dominates headlines, Indian filmmaker Girish Malik is stepping forward with an ambitious docu-drama that aims to offer ancient solutions to modern problems. “Mahamantra,” his latest directorial venture, is being presented at the European Film Market, and weaves together Vedic philosophy, contemporary science and urgent social commentary in what he describes as “a cry from the soul.”

“The genesis of ‘Mahamantra’ was born from the ashes of personal struggle and a world seemingly teetering on the brink,” Malik says. “Recent years have felt like a relentless assault — wars, environmental collapse, pandemics … a constant barrage of chaos.”

The film, produced by Malik’s Clapstem Prods., marks a bold departure from Malik’s previous works, including his Netflix hit “Torbaaz” (2021) and the politically leaning musical “Band of Maharajas” (2024). This time, he’s tackling weightier themes, drawing parallels between Shiva’s cosmic dance and modern scientific theories, while...

India’s Clapstem Entertainment, led by director-producer Girish Malik and producer Amardeep S. Reen, has a slate that includes “Band of Maharajas,” which screened at Berlin’s European Film Market.

Malik’s directorial debut, ecological drama “Jal” (2013), was in Busan’s New Currents competition. His sophomore feature, refugee and sports themed “Torbaaz” (2020), headlined by Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, was a Netflix original film.

His third film, “Band of Maharajas,” is the story of three clueless young folk musicians from a remote border village in India who undertake an unplanned and unusual journey to Pakistan that changes their lives and music. The film has the tagline “While countries divide us, music unites us.”

Next up is docu-drama “Om Namah Shivay,” which commences production in March. The film will delve into the Eastern philosophy of how Hindu god Shiva and the mantra Om Namah Shivay can bring harmony across the world and...

Movie Review | Torbaaz: A feel good package with Sanjay Dutt and cricket
Girish Malik
Director Girish Malik is known for his previous outing Jal (2013) with Purab Kohli, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Kirti Kulhari. His latest release Torbaaz with Sanjay Dutt leading the cast, talks of war and terror, and the toll such things may take on children. The film infuses the idea with the power of sports - in this case it is the usual suspect - cricket - to unite & heal.

Nasser Khan (Sanjay Dutt) is an ex-army man (doctor) haunted by his tragic back story. His wife and child were killed in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan. Nasser visits the war-torn Afghanistan for a felicitation ceremony at the request of a close family friend Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri). On seeing that the terror and violence continues unabated, Nasser decides to make a difference. In a place where innocent young kids are often forcibly taken away to join terror outfits. Rahul Dev: Torbaaz presents battle of two ideologies
Rahul Dev
By Arundhuti Banerjee

Mumbai, Dec 8 (Ians) Rahul Dev plays a pivotal role in the upcoming Sanjay Dutt-starrer Torbaaz. He says the film is primarily about a battle of ideologies of two perspectives in a war-torn situation that is ruining the future generation.

"It is an interesting story and I watched a BBC documentary as part of preparation for my role. My character is an Afghan leader who has become an extremist. He is a man who has a battle of ideology with the protagonist of the film, played by Sanjay Dutt. But it is not a physical fight or action. It is the difference between two ideologies rather than one playing villain," Rahul told Ians.

Set against the backdrop of political conflict in Afghanistan, the film revolves around children in Afghan refugee camps who are being trained to become suicide bombers, and how their childhood has been snatched away by endless war and genocide.

Many actors and filmmakers in Mumbai are contemplating a move away from Mumbai. While Sudhir Mishra and Tigmanshu Dhulia are in the process of setting up base in Delhi and Up, respectively, Mumbai boy Purab Kohli has shifted to Goa . Purab who gives a stunning performance in Girish Malik's Jal says it has become "impossible" to live in Mumbai because of the traffic and the pollution. "For a guy who was born and brought up in Mumbai, the break was not easy. But I don't see it as a break. Rather it is like figuring out a new level of existence while preserving the old. I haven't broken away from Mumbai. I come back here whenever work beckons," says Purab, though even work as an actor no longer requires Purab in Mumbai. "A large number of films are being shot outside Mumbai. My latest film Jal was shot in Kutch in one 40-day schedule.

Purab Kohli, who’ll be seen in some action packed scenes in his upcoming movie Jal, prefers doing stunts on his own without using a body double. “I like doing my own stunts. I feel I haven’t worked if I haven’t done my stunts. Having performed the action in Jal, I feel I can do a lot of stunts,” says Purab. The movie is slated to release on 4th April 2014.

The scene in the movie shows Purab’s character Bakka accused of theft and as a result the villagers decided to drag him across the Rann of Kutch by tying him to a camel. Jal’s director Girish Malik suggested using a body double but Purab refused. “I knew getting dragged by a camel in a dessert sounds horrible, though I have to admit it was real fun. Girish Malik
'Jal' an aqueous epic of Shakespearean proportions (Ians Movie Review - Rating: ****)
Girish Malik
Film: "Jal"; Cast: Purab Kohli, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Kirti Kulhari, Mukul Dev; Director: Girish Malik; Rating: ****

It's a never-before experience. Tapestried and tempestuous, the tides of Girish Malik's narrative rise and swell like the frequent sandstorms in the desertscape that Sunita Radia's camera captures so evocatively in this saga of raging ragas.

There is more than just a little bit of Shakespeare in Girish Malik's directorial debut. "Jal" leaves you with many fluttering strands of thought swimming in the tormented tides of humanity's most deprived and financially challenged part of civilization where drinking water is more precious than gold.

Malik's richly layered narrative sweeps across the Rann Of.

'Jal' not an art film: Kirti Kulhari
Purab Kohli and Saidah Jules in Jal (2013)
Mumbai, March 28: Actress Kirti Kulhari, who is busy promoting her forthcoming movie "Jal", says it's not an art film but a complete Bollywood masala entertainer.

The movie, directed by first-timer Girish Malik, has done its rounds at various film extravaganzas, including the Busan International Film Festival. This, Kirti believes, must not paint a wrong picture of the movie.

"It's a myth that once a film goes for festivals, it doesn't do well commercially. I think some recent films have changed that notion. As far as 'Jal' is concerned, it's not an art film. It's a complete Bollywood masala film, but it's not a no-brainer,".
