  • Was nominated for Broadway's Tony Award three times, all as Best Actor (Featured Role - Play): in 1979 for "Spokesong"; in 1980 for "Night and Day" and in 1986 for a revival of Joe Orton's "Loot". These make him the most nominated actor in that particular category.
  • Born in County Galway, Ireland, the son of a schoolteacher, Maher emigrated to Canada in 1956 and first worked for an oil company. Becoming interested in the theatre, he studied acting at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto. His first appearance on stage was in a Toronto production of "The Taming of the Shrew". He moved to New York after touring with the Canadian Players for three years.
  • He was awarded the 1987 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Distinguished Lead Performance for "Loot" at the Mark Taper Forum Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
  • He was awarded the 1977 OBIE Award for Distinguished Performance in a Leading Role for the play, "Savages," off-Broadway in New York City.
  • He was awarded the 1987 Drama Logue Award for Outstanding Performance for "Entertaining Mr. Sloane" at the Mark Taper Forum Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
  • He was awarded the 1987 Drama Logue Award for Outstanding Performance for "Loot" at the Mark Taper Forum Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
