“Didn’t Catch On Like We Had Hoped”: Fox Bosses React to ‘Rescue: Hi-Surf’ Cancellation
Image
After only a season comprising nineteen intense episodes, Fox cancelled the lifeguard-centered drama, Rescue: Hi-Surf, just last week. Created by Matt Kester, who also served as showrunner, the series was piloted for HBO Max in 2021 before being picked up by Fox and premiering on September 22, 2024. For many still wondering why it was among the most recent TV cancellations, the network’s execs have officially provided an explanation via TV Line, noting that it didn’t draw as many viewers as desired.

Season 1 of the island drama averaged 2.8 million total viewers, with delayed playback, ranking in the fourth spot out of the seven dramas Fox aired this TV season. It surpassed the likes of Accused, Alert: Missing Persons Unit, andThe Cleaning Lady. Furthermore, Rescue: Hi-Surf delivered 65% audience retention out of lead-in Lone Star, and was this season’s 10th-most watched new broadcast drama out of 12. However, in terms of critical response,...

It starred Robbie Magasiva as Harlan “Sonny” Jennings, Arielle Kebbel as Emily “Em” Wright, Adam Demos as Will Ready, Kekoa Kekumano as Laka Hanohano, Zoe Cipres as Hina Alexander, and Alex Aiono as Kainalu Emerson.

Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn explained more about what happened behind-the-scenes that led to the decision.

‘Rescue Hi-Surf’ Wasn’t Renewed Because “It Just Didn’t Quite Grab The Audience”
Image
Rescue Hi-Surf may have developed a loyal following but it didn’t warrant enough of an audience to help it earn a second season.

When talking up its new lineup Sunday during a press conference, Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn said Fox “went all in on two shows last season, Hi-Surf and Doc but the former show from John Wells “just didn’t catch on like we had hoped.” The series that follows the personal and professional lives of the heavy-water lifeguards who patrol and protect the North Shore of O’ahu averaged 2.98M this season.

“We love our partnership with John Wells and Warner Brothers and hope to do more with John and are doing more with Warner Brothers, but it just didn’t resonate with our audience the way we needed to be able to return it,” he continued.

While the drama fit in Fox’s $3M-$4M-an-episode model,...

‘Rescue: Hi-Surf’ Canceled at Fox
Image
As the May upfronts loom, Fox has cancelled the Hawaii-set lifeguard drama Rescue: Hi-Surf from John Wells after one season, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The freshman drama followed a group of heavy-water lifeguards along the north shore of Oahu and came from writer Matt Kester (Animal Kingdom). Warner Bros. Television, Wells’ long-time studio home, produced the series along with Fox Entertainment.

In 2023, Fox gave a straight-to-series order to Rescue: Hi-Surf for its 2023-24 lineup, with Wells to executive produce and direct the first two episodes. The life-and-death stakes series starred Zoe Cipres, The White Lotus’s Kekoa Kekumano, Arielle Kebbel, Robbie Magasiva, Adam Demos and Alex Aiono.

The hourlong series chronicled the dramatic rescues and interpersonal dramas of a team of first responders working a particularly dangerous stretch of Oahu’s North Shore. Kester served as showrunner for the series and executive produced with Wells and Erin Jontow of John Wells Productions.

Rescue Hi-Surf Can’t Beat This Wave: Fox Drama Canceled After One Season
Image
We’ve been shocked by sudden cancellations this season, but Fox may have just taken the cake.

According to Deadline, Rescue Hi-Surf has been canceled after its freshman season.

While the decision comes as a shock given that its numbers were pretty respectable for a show on the network, it seems the decision was more about money than anything else.

(Zach Dugan/Fox)

In recent years, new shows have featured one or two A-list leads as the draws, but it seems Fox wanted to get Rescue Hi-Surf off the ground, err, shore, within a strict budget.

When all was said and done, Rescue Hi-Surf Season 1 averaged 1.8 million viewers and a 0.22 rating among adults 18-49.

The Fate of 'Rescue Hi-Surf,' Fox's '9-1-1' Replacement Has Been Decided
Image
The fate of Rescue: H1-Surf has been decided by Fox in a shocking turn. The network has announced that Rescue: H1-Surf, Fox's replacement for 9-1-1, has officially been canceled after one season. There are also reportedly no plans for Warner Bros. to shop the series, leaving it truly dead in the water with no chance to be revived elsewhere. What makes this news even more devastating is that fans have been turning up in rows, voting enough on Save the Show polls that Rescue H1-Surf had ranked high on the platform’s list of series that have fans craving another season. This cancellation comes just over one month after the season finale, and updates on the series have been eerily quiet in the days since.

‘Rescue Hi-Surf’ Canceled By Fox After One Season
Image
It’s low tide for Rescue Hi-Surf as Fox has opted not to renew the freshman drama from producer John Wells for a second season. The news will come as a blow to diehard fans of the Hawaiian lifeguard series who have been showing their support by voting en masse in various Save the Show polls where Rescue Hi-Surf has been ranking high. There are no plans for the show to be shopped by producing studio Warner Bros. Television, sources said.

The cancellation comes more than a month after Rescue Hi-Surf‘s Season 1 finale, which aired March 31, and a year after Fox revealed its big expectations for the series last spring — giving it a very early seven-episode back order and assigning it the post-Super Bowl slot. That was soon followed by a special Sunday series premiere date behind an NFL double-header.

Yes, it’s early, “but I have to head to town, turn in my paperwork, then I’ll officially be your boss,” she explains. (She’s going to be captain with Robbie Magasiva‘s Sonny retiring.) “I can’t wait,” he says. “You’re going to love it,” she tells him with a laugh. From Rescue: Hi-Surf to Chicago Pd: Shawn Hatosy is Slaying It As A Crooked Public Servant
Image
It’s not uncommon to see the same actor playing several different roles at the same time, especially on TV shows.

Shawn Hatosy has a role on Rescue: Hi-Surf but is also a recurring face on Chicago Pd. Both roles portray Hatosy as an entitled white male in charge who’s not afraid to bend the rules to get his way.

It’s not the first time Hatosy has taken on roles that depict him negatively. He’s one of those actors who is great at playing a jerky bad guy. However, he also has numerous memorable characteristics as an okay guy.

(Lori Allen/NBC)

Hatosy fans from the ’90s might remember him from his early days when he took on awkward teen roles to expand his filmography.

He had several small supporting roles, racking up time with big names like Brittany Murphy (Double Jeopardy) and James Russo (No Way Home...

Fox 2025 Midseason Premiere Dates Announced
Image
Fox today announced its 2025 midseason premiere dates and is getting pumped up for its February “Fox’s Super Week,” capturing the ongoing excitement ahead of Fox Sports’ presentation of Super Bowl Lix.

The midseason schedule on Fox starts Thursday, Jan. 2, with the series premiere of the all-new Denis Leary workplace comedy, Going Dutch (9:30-10:00 p.m. Et/Pt), preceded by the Season Three premiere of Joel McHale’s hit series, Animal Control (9:00-9:30 Pm Et/Pt), together building a new Thursday night comedy block on Fox. The night also includes the return of Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen (8:00-9:00 Pm Et/Pt).

Animal Control

In Going Dutch, the arrogant, loudmouth U.S. Army Colonel Patrick Quinn (Leary) — after an epically unfiltered rant — is reassigned to the Netherlands, where he is punished with a command position at the least important army base in the world,...

‘The Floor’ Season 3 Premiere Replaces ‘Rescue: Hi-Surf’ After Super Bowl On Fox
Image
This is a rare last-minute switch of the Super Bowl lead-out program. In announcing its midseason premiere dates this morning, Fox revealed that The Floor Season 3 premiere will follow Fox Sports’ presentation of Super Bowl Lix on Feb. 9. It is taking over the slot assigned in May to freshman lifeguard drama Rescue Hi-Surf.

Because of the late timing, the special post-Super Bowl episode of the John Wells-produced Rescue Hi-Surf already has been produced. It will now air the following night, Feb. 10, in the drama’s regular Monday 9 Pm berth after substantial promotion during the Big Game. Per Fox, the episode “brings gridiron energy to Hawaii’s North Shore,” and I hear it is supersized, longer than the regular length for a broadcast drama. (Official episode description below.)

Rescue Hi-Surf got the post-Super Bowl slot months ahead of its premiere after Fox executives had seen cuts of the first couple of episodes.
