'Mutilator 2' Finally Available to Watch on Prime Video
Image
When it comes to great slasher horror movies from the 1980s, there's a few obvious ones that immediately come to mind. Friday the 13th, the Halloween sequels, Child's Play, and A Nightmare on Elm Street are all classics today, but in 1985 a rare gem came along to break free of the grasp that Freddy, Jason, Michael, and Chucky had on the decade to carve out its own path to cult-classic status. Now, 40 years later, the long-awaited sequel is finally available on Prime Video, and it's everything we wanted it to be, and more.

We're, of course, talking about Mutilator 2, the meta-sequel to The Mutilator, which hit theaters in New York in 1985. Directed once more by Buddy Cooper, the follow-up sees Ruth Martinez and Bill Hitchcock return to play themselves, with Terry Kiser (Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood) and Damian Maffei (The Strangers: Prey At Night) also along for the ride.

Mutilator 2, writer/director Buddy Cooper’s long-awaited follow-up to his 1984 slasher The Mutilator (pick up a copy Here), is starting to make its way out into the world. The movie was screened at Joe Bob Briggs’ latest drive-in Jamboree event a couple of years ago, and received an “audience favorite” award there. It’s currently available to watch at This Link, where it can be rented for $2.99 or purchased for $9.99.

Cooper has confirmed that the movie will be released to major transactional platforms first followed by Fandango/Vudu, Rogers, and then some of the Mod platforms. Eventually, it will also make its way to Tubi and Xumo.

Lewis has brought a sort of quiet charisma and intensity to most of his roles, and if you have liked the way he portrayed Bob/Sentry/Void in Thunderbolts*, here are 10 of his movies that also deserve your attention.

Black Eyed Susan (2024)
Black Eyed Susan - Jennie Kermode - 19197
Black Eyed Susan (2024)
There’s a scene towards the end of Black Eyed Susan when the titular AI sex doll (played by Yvonne Emilie Thälker) is travelling in a car. The driver, Derek (Damian Maffei), turns on some music, and it emerges that she’s unfamiliar with the concept. Writer/director Scooter McCrae seems to be setting us up for one of those inspiring bonding moments when a robot breaks through a cognitive ceiling and suddenly learns to appreciate this truly human experience, but any hope that Derek had of such a moment are dashed when she says flatly that she prefers the noise of the engine. The take-away would seem to be that she’s just a machine after all. it’s only later, thinking about it, that you might realise she has expressed a preference, and not merely performed to please the man she was with.

Susan is the latest in...

Things to come by Jennie Kermode
Black Eyed Susan (2024)
Black Eyed Susan Photo: Fantasia International Film Festival

Probably the most divisive and challenging film at Fantasia this year, Scooter McCrae’s Black Eyed Susan tells the story of Derek (played by Damian Maffei), who is offered a job working for a tech company. The company sells increasingly realistic AI-powered sex dolls, and wants his hand-on assistance with testing and developing a doll who will deliver a satisfying response to being beaten – a doll marketed to potential domestic abusers. Towards the end of the festival, I got the opportunity to chat to Scooter, Damian, and Yvonne, who gives an uncanny performance as the robot, nicknamed ‘Susan’. I asked if they saw such products as an inevitable consequence of technological advances and capitalism.

“Yeah,” says Scooter. “I mean, what doesn't capitalism eventually take a hold of and try to squeeze money out? So of course this is next. And, you know,...

Fantasia Review: Black Eyed Susan Confronts the Limitations of Humanity
Image
As the world flattens with new technologies to reveal how tragedies we used to only hear about now and then are actually everyday occurrences, we become inured to those horrors as a means to cope. It’s gotten to the point where something as heinous as domestic abuse has become a meme whenever the latest sports championship ends––see social-media posts upon the completion of the UEFA Euro 2024, sharing that many English women were inevitably going to find themselves victims of drunk and angry husbands that night. We read them, nod our heads, and move on.

Whereas increased funding and resources to combat these trends and curb misogyny is surely the best avenue towards finding a permanent solution, we’re too busy using public funds for an over-powered military whenever politicians aren’t cutting those taxes to enrich the wealthy first. So entrepreneurs start to hypothesize what they might be...

Fantasia 2024 Preview: Scooter McCrae is back with ‘Black Eyed Susan’
Image
Legendary underground filmmaker Scooter McCrae returns after a 21-year absence from feature filmmaking with the bold, vulgar, and deeply thought-provoking Black Eyed Susan. Simultaneously brutally challenging and deeply vulnerable, the latest from the New York-based provocateur appropriates bleeding-edge science fiction concepts to address the seemingly endless lengths that men will go to satisfy their darkest impulses without questioning the consequences of their actions.

In the film, down-on-his-luck Derek (Damien Maffei; The Strangers: Prey at Night) is hired by a shady tech industrialist to “test” Susan, a lifelike robot built for the purpose of receiving and “enjoying” sexual abuse. Initially hesitant to take part, Derek accepts, but quickly finds himself drawn to Susan’s developing personality and inquisitive nature. As the robot’s expanding humanity chips away at him and he learns more about his own secret desires, he questions if what he’s been tasked to do – even to a robot – should ever be condoned.

Welcome to The Best of The Bad Guys! Where we rank the best of cinema’s worst villains. From their best kill to their best jump scares and even their French kissing abilities. What? Today, we’re talking about The Strangers. A trio of mysterious and sadistic murderers who like to show up in remote locations, toy with, piss off, and eventually murder human beings for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

Now, at the time of this writing, there are only two films worth of Stranger’s awful antics, but there’s an entire trilogy on the way, starting with Renny Harlin’s The Strangers: Chapter One this May. Would you like to go lay by the bay? Perhaps eat some hay? The original...

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game will be adding a new killer, a new victim, and The Mill map
Image
I’ve only played a few video games over the last twenty years, primarily Halo online multiplayer and the recent Friday the 13th game that was hindered by lawsuits… and gaming sure is different these days than it was in my time, when a game was released in its complete form and then you just played the hell out of it. Now, if a game doesn’t get very frequent updates, players will abandon it very quickly. For example, the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game from Gun Interactive and Sumo Nottingham was just released for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One back on August 18th, and even though it was updated a new map and a couple new characters at the end of November, I’ve already seen gamers complaining that it’s getting stale and will be pronounced dead if there isn’t another update soon.

Eva Hamilton in Mutilator 2 (2023)
Mutilator 2: sequel to 1980s slasher is still seeking distribution
Eva Hamilton in Mutilator 2 (2023)
Mutilator 2, writer/director Buddy Cooper’s long-awaited follow-up to his 1984 slasher The Mutilator (pick up a copy Here), is ready to make its way out into the world. The movie even screened at Joe Bob Briggs’ latest drive-in Jamboree event back in October, and received an “audience favorite” award there. And yet it still hasn’t secured a distribution deal. Cooper confirmed this on Facebook, where he wrote, “We are still searching for distribution. It might help if a few fans asked their favorite streaming service or theater when they would be showing Mutilator 2. If enough people show an interest, I feel like a distributor would be willing to help get it out to everyone.“

The fact that Shudder hasn’t swooped in to release this as a Shudder Original is shocking, given that they’ve not only had The Mutilator on their streaming service, but even had...
