Although she gained a reputation as a serious artiste because of her sensitive performance in "Marocharithra" (1979) and its Hindi remake "Ek Duje Ke Liye" (1982), she has had no problem exhibiting a fun, sexy image by donning a bikini in the Tamil film "Tik Tik Tik" (1981) or sporting a blonde look in her personal life in 2006.

In 2006, she said that her time in films was a golden period and even though she has retired from acting, she still feels the urge to act when she sees good films.

In 2006, she indicated that she has been blissfully married for the past 10 years to the US Pharmaceutical businessman Ralph Sharma who is half Indian and half German. She has three children and lives in New Jersey, USA assisting her husband in his business.

Her entry into Hindi films was in a supporting role in the blockbuster "Ek Duje Ke Liye" (1981), where was asked to repeat her role from the original Telugu hit "Marocharithra" (1979). She received a Filmfare nomination as Best Supporting Actress and was elevated to heroine roles opposite superstar Amitabh Bachchan, such as "Agneepath" (1990).

She has acted as a heroine for 17 years in seven languages: Telugu (her mother tongue), Tamil, Oriya, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi.

Retired from films, she lives in New Jersey, USA with her businessman husband Sharma and her three children and makes pilgrimage trips to India. (August 2006)
