The upcoming Tower of Terror movie gets an update from Scarlett Johansson. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is among the most famous rides at Walt Disney World and has exhilarated guests for decades by imagining a haunted elevator belonging to the Hollywood Tower Hotel. Following a 1997 movie, starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst, a new Tower of Terror adaptation was announced in 2021. Details remain scarce, but Johansson previously teased the status of the screenplay in 2023, revealing that it was still being worked on.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Johansson gave an update on how Tower of Terror is coming together. As she explained, it has been challenging to make the original theme park ride story into a movie. Johansson also revealed that it "doesn't have so much to dig into," but noted that creating the film has been an enjoyable process. Read her comments below:

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Johansson said of the hotly-anticipated Disney World drop ride adaptation, "It's a hard nut to crack. Harder than you think, because the ride itself, there's some lore to it, but it's... I don't want to say thin, but it is, kind of!" Johansson went on to note that the ride itself "doesn’t have so much to dig into" in terms of narrative. "That's part of the mystery of the ride. It's been a fun project to work on, because it's a blue sky project. It has also proved to be a hard nut to crack. But, we'll crack the case of it. It's taking shape!"

While talks of a modern Tower of Terror adaptation have been reported on since as early as 2015, it wasn't until 2021 that Johansson became an integral part of the production.

Four years later, Scarlett Johansson is still stuck in the Twilight Zone while trying to figure out her Tower of Terror update.

After Deadline announced in 2021 that she’ll produce a new film inspired by the Disney World ride and written by Josh Cooley, the 2x Oscar nominee recently teased that the script is “taking shape” as they attempt to flesh out the narrative of the attraction.

Thanks to a tip from the director behind this reboot, a tiny bit of footage has appeared online. Director Jared Pelletier explains "this was shot years ago when the IP was being rebooted." He was developing this for the studio before they greenlit a "lighter version". The original Are You Afraid of the Dark? was a children's horror anthology TV series from D.J. MacHale & Ned Kandel showing on Nickelodeon. It first aired on Nickelodeon from 1992 to 1996, with another different reboot that ran from 2019 to 2022. This teaser footage is for a darker version. Pelletier says, "this version took a darker 90s approach, when shows like Goosebumps were decidedly unafraid to scare kids." Alas this is all we'll see of it for now...

In the last half decade, D.J. MacHale has noticed a significant uptick in interest in Are You Afraid of the Dark?, the Nickelodeon anthology series he co-created nearly 30 years ago. Though he spent much of his career as a television writer, director, and producer, he’s had a successful second act as an author of sci-fi, fantasy, and supernatural novels. When fans of his novels put it together that he also produced all 91 episodes of the original run of the Nickelodeon classic, he started receiving an outpour of appreciation.

“Suddenly this wave of social media came to me about Are You Afraid of the Dark?,” MacHale told Den of Geek. “There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t speak to someone in some way, shape or form about [the show].”

The Apple Originals will join other free premium content from channels partners available in the Apple TV app. The Apple TV app is available on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod touch, Mac, select Samsung and LG smart TVs, and Amazon Fire TV and Roku devices.

Apple TV+ is following the example set by other streamers and making some of its programming available for free for a limited time while viewers are stuck at home.

A handful of Apple’s original programs are being made available on the Apple TV app starting Thursday, including the nature documentary “Elephant Queen,” the M. A whole new generation of kids are currently being scared by “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” as Nickelodeon’s reboot series airs its third and final terrifying episode on Friday, Oct. 25.

Following in the footsteps of the original ’90s cult series, the 2019 iteration of the horror anthology revolves around a group of young teens dubbed the Midnight Society who tell scary stories around a campfire.

The kids network released the first teaser for its upcoming revival of the classic ’90s series “Are You Afraid of the Dark,” and the new version looks a fright more more sinister than the original. The teaser, which you can watch above, shows a new batch of kids gathered around a campfire, submitting fresh scary stories for the approval of the Midnight Society.

The trailer features ominous music and more soundbites of screaming than we ever expected to hear on the channel that brought us “Spongebob,” “Zoey 101,” and almost every other beloved kids show. Then it asks the time-worn question anew: “Are you afraid of the dark?”

Let me kick this off by saying that I'm a massive fan of Nickelodeon's 90's kid-horror anthology series Are You Afraid of the Dark?. I own every episode on DVD (come on Blu-ray collection!) and, yes, I can hand over some choice episode recommends (see below). And it's armed with this love of all things The Midnight Society, that one of the upcoming horror movies that I'm looking forward to the most is Paramount's big-budget feature film adaptation.

And today we have word that the upcoming film has snagged its director in the form of D.J. Caruso. Caruso is best known for helming such films as xXx: Return of Xander Cage, I Am Number Four, Eagle Eye, and The Salton Sea. But don't let that deter you from being excited about the man's possible involvement with this upcoming kid-horror movie. Caruso also has films like Disturbia and Taking Lives under his belt.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Disney's penchant for turning theme park rides into movies didn't start with "Pirates Of The Caribbean" (though, that is when they began spending insane piles of money on such fare). Back in 1997, they made their first real attempt with the made-for-tv "Tower Of Terror" starring Steve Guttenberg and Kristen Dunst. Someone named D.J. The creepy television series Are You Afraid of the Dark? has found its way online. Every episode is now at your fingertips. This was brought to "the Internet's" attention via a Reddit user who has created a guide for all of you. You can get started by clicking here.

The show was a series produced in Canada by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel. Nickelodeon picked it up in the early '90s and brought it to the U.S. Now, because this was a series presented to a generation of horror fans before my time, I'll refer to the Wikipedia description of the show. But, before I do, I wanted to give you the heads-up that The Cinefamily in Los Angeles (if you happen to live in the area) is doing an Are You Afraid of the Dark? tribute on October 23rd.

What's this? Another young adult trilogy is being adapted for the big screen? Next in line is D.J. MacHale's The Sylo Chronicles from Fox 2000 and The Donners Company’s Lauren Shuler Donner. Read on for the details.

Per Deadline, Thor Freudenthal (Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters) will direct, and Marc Guggenheim ("Arrow"), who worked with Freudenthal previously on Percy Jackson, is writing the screenplay. Shuler Donner and Donners’ production president Jack Leslie will produce. Author MacHale (who wrote the series Pendragon, The Morphius Road trilogy, and The Monster Princess and has directed/produced the TV series "Are You Afraid of The Dark?" and "Tower of Terror") will exec produce. Nick D’Angelo will oversee the project for the studio.

The first book (Sylo) was published this past July by Razorbill; the second (Storm) follows in March 2014 with the third coming later that fall.

The series follows the inhabitants of a small island who find themselves cut off from the mainland by a mysterious government military force.

Several teens escape to the mainland, only to discover that the inhabitants of the United States have all but vanished, and that they were actually being kept safe.

They try to discover the source of the invasion and fight back.

Thor Freudenthal ("Percy Jackson And The Sea Of Monsters") is slated to direct from a script by Marc Guggenheim. Shuler Donner and Jack Leslie will produce.

Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.
