Before entering film, Lugg performed as an actor and singer appearing in many musicals and operas. Perhaps the most important part of his stage career came between 1884 and 1885 when he performed with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company as a Bass Soloist in smaller roles. As well as creating the role of Scynthius in the original run of "Princess Ida", he also portrayd The Usher in "Trial By Jury" and The Notary in "The Sorcerer"
