Hear a Lost Recording of an Unknown Gary Clark Jr. Ripping Through ‘Catfish Blues’ in 2004
Image
Long before Gary Clark Jr. jammed with Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, and Foo Fighters, and headlined festivals all across the globe, he was an unknown, unsigned blues guitarist in his hometown of Austin, Texas, desperate to make a name for himself. On Sept. 24, 2004, when he was just 20, Clark found himself onstage at Antone’s Nightclub playing the blues standard “Catfish Blues” on a bill that also included Double Trouble, James Cotton, and Jimmie Vaughan.

A tape of his blazing performance from that night has been tucked away for the past 21 years,...

Michael Keaton Among First Guests for 'Everybody's Live With John Mulaney'
Image
Who could bring together Batman, famous comedians, finance journalists, and folk singers for a live talk show? Well, writer and comedian John Mulaney, of course. Mulaney's newest endeavor, Everybody's Live, will be Netflix's first-ever live talk show, so you know they had to pull out all the stops. The live comedy show, set to premiere on Netflix on March 12, 7 p.m. Pt, has recently released a sneak peek at its surprisingly eclectic guest list.

In the first episode of the first season of the live show, which has already been renewed for a second season according to Deadline, will feature an impressive guest lineup of actor Michael Keaton, American folk singer and activist Joan Baez, actor and comedian Fred Armisen, Cypress Hill and personal finance columnist Jessica Roy. Now that's an odd group that only the Spider-Ham voice actor could assemble. However, the list is not unusual for Mulaney's tastes,...

Maná Think Their Rock Hall of Fame Nod Is ‘the Start of Something Much Bigger’
Image
After Maná became the first Spanish-language band to earn a nomination for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last week, drummer Alex González had an iconic José Alfredo Jiménez lyric ringing in his head: “No hay que llegar primero, pero hay que saber llegar.” (“You don’t need to get there first, but you must know how you got there.”)

The classic “El Rey” line speaks to the years of sacrifice and work that Maná and many major Latin American rock bands have put in to be finally recognized...

Bleach Villains Who Deserved Redemption Arcs
Image
Bleach is a hit shonen anime with a massive cast of characters, some of which are much more sympathetic and lovable than others. Anime fans can always root for protagonists like Ichigo Kurosaki, and they've even warmed up to some redeemed antagonists like Captain Byakuya Kuchiki. In fact, the series features a variety of villains whom fans might have forgiven in the long run if those characters got a well-deserved chance at redemption.

To keep the series' large cast of characters managable, the Bleach anime made a habit of killing off or writing out most of its villains, so it's hard not wonder how the story could have played out if the more redeemable villains actually got a chance to atone for their past wrongs. While no one expects the likes of Aaroniero Arruruerie or Bambietta Basterbine to repent for their villainy, there's a strong case to be made for...

Weezer Enjoy ‘The Good Life,’ Celebrate the Blue Album on John Mulaney’s ‘Everybody’s in L.A.’
Image
Weezer were among the many people in Los Angeles this week who showed up for John Mulaney’s Everybody’s in L.A., performing two songs on the comedian’s delightfully shaggy and silly one-week-only talk show.

The band led with “The Good Life,” the great Pinkerton single about wanting nothing more than to shake off anxiety, heartache, and despair, and get back out in the world (even though the song is still shot through with a bit of that anxiety, heartache, and despair). Mulaney introduced the performance with characteristic anti-zeal: “Hey party animals,...

John Mulaney’s Everybody’s in L.A. Reveals Full Guest Lineup
Image
John Mulaney Presents Everybody’s in L.A. proved to be very much a late-night styled talk show in its live premiere Friday night on Netflix. Now like any good late night show, the six-episode miniseries is revealing its lineup for the coming week—and, as promised, it’s a doozy.

Leading things off tonight (and explaining this week’s Daily Show scheduling switcheroo) is none other than Jon Stewart. Stewart, like most of Mulaney’s guests this week, is in Los Angeles for the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival. He performed over the weekend at L.A.’s Greek Theatre.

Other guests sitting down with Mulaney later in the week include Nate Bargatze, Sarah Silverman, David Letterman, Bill Hader, Rony Chieng, and Hannah Gadsby.

Each night also features a musical performace, with Warren G kicking things off tonight, followed by Joyce Manor, Weezer, Los Lobos, and Beck.

Last month, Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro put out a call to the public, asking people to send ideas for music by Latin artists to submit to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. It’s part of a years-long effort on Castro’s part to get more Latin art preserved within the Library of Congress and to increase Latino representation across media and pop culture.

The National Recording Registry is made up of works considered “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” or that “inform or reflect life in the United States.

Anime Characters Who Pretend To Be Strong and Brave
Image
Takeaway 1: Some anime characters talk a big game but can't back it up, making fools of themselves in battle. It can be due to overestimating themselves or relying on psychological warfare. Takeaway 2: Characters like Spinner and Lilynette Gingerbuck are examples of being all talk and no bite. Spinner idolizes a hero killer but lacks the power to follow through, while Lilynette is all bluster without combat ability. Takeaway 3: Konohamaru and Aqua are also characters who talk a lot but struggle to deliver. Despite their big words, they have limited skills and often need rescue.

Plenty of anime characters talk themselves up and boast about their incredible powers, but not all of them can back it up. Some characters, often villains, speak from a position of power and genuinely threaten the heroes, while other characters are all bluster. If an anime character is all bark and no bite,...

Weirdest Zanpakuto in Bleach, Ranked
Image
Bleach is a shonen action series focusing not on ninjutsu or Quirks but zanpakuto, or soul-cutting swords. Zanpakuto were introduced as the weapon of choice for black-robed Soul Reapers who hunt evil spirits called Hollows, but these weapons aren't just supernatural swords. Zanpakuto have their own names, unique powers, and even different personalities. Some feel fairly ordinary, like Kazeshini and Hozukimaru, while others are downright bizarre.

Some Soul Reapers carry zanpakuto whose shikai and bankai stages have unusual powers, and in the strangest cases, the shikai and bankai modes don't even match. Meanwhile, a few Arrancar also wield unusual zanpakuto with strange shapes in their sealed forms, setting them apart from the ordinary katanas that Grimmjow and Zommari use. Strange as they are, though, the most unusual zanpakuto in Bleach are what make this iconic shonen series so fun and unpredictable.

Every Song In Snatch
Image
The soundtrack of Guy Ritchie’s classic crime comedy Snatch is filled with great needle drops from a wide variety of musicians ranging from Oasis to 10cc to Madonna. After establishing his darkly comedic take on the British crime film in Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Ritchie returned to London’s criminal underworld for more violence and pitch-black humor at the hands of tough-as-nails gangsters in Snatch. Snatch weaves two separate narratives – one about the search for a stolen diamond and the other about a crime boss forcing a small-time boxing promoter to step up his game – with ironic twists and chance encounters.

From wisecracking mobsters to nonlinear narratives to a twisted sense of humor, Ritchie borrowed a lot from the Tarantino playbook in rounding out his own signature filmmaking style. Soundtrack needle-drops are another stylistic flourish that Ritchie has taken from Tarantino. Like Tarantino, Ritchie often pairs violent...

Cobra Kai Season 5 Has A Very Specific Robert Rodriguez Easter Egg
Image
Spoilers ahead for the first episode of "Cobra Kai" season 5.

You're probably tired right now, after staying up all night to watch season 5 of the Netflix series "Cobra Kai." It's understandable. The show, which was originally created for YouTube Red, has become a huge hit, and was a pandemic binge for so many of us. There is something so comforting about revisiting characters we loved when we were younger, and seeing how they've changed ... and how they haven't.

The series takes place decades after the events of the first four "The Karate Kid" films, and Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) have kids of their own now. Johnny is still a screw up, but he's trying to make things right. In the first episode, he goes after his student Miguel (Xolo Maridueña), who has taken off to Ceuta, Mexico to find his biological father. Of course, he also takes Miguel's rival,...

The Eternal Legacy of Ritchie Valens
Image
Ritchie Valens was just 17 years old when he changed the course of pop music in the late 1950s. As the first Mexican-American hitmaker in the U.S., he laid the groundwork for Chicano rock and beyond, with an enduring legacy that continues to inspire generation after generation — from legends like Carlos Santana and Los Lobos to Gen Z musicians like Cuco and DannyLux. And while Valens died 62 years ago, his music continues to have an everlasting impact today, on what would have been his 80th birthday.

Music at Home: Walls of Sound
Image
I’ve spent quarantine living with my girlfriend in a scantly furnished family home in Brooklyn. We’re surrounded by empty walls that constantly echo our conversations, and to pass the time — and fill all that extra space — we play music as loud as it will go. The louder we blast the songs below, the more present they become, like actual walls of sound.

These songs are not all bangers. But they are all intricately woven tales of lovers, fighters, hustlers, and the broken-hearted that demand to be listened to...

‘Los Lobos’ Review: Immigrant Variation on ‘The Florida Project’ Is a Rousing Coming-of-Age Story
Image
“The Florida Project” excelled at showing how a child’s imagination can provide the mental armor necessary to endure impoverished circumstances, but it never had a monopoly on the concept. “Los Lobos,” the bittersweet new feature from director Samuel Kishi, plays like a thematic variation on the same beguiling premise in the context of the American immigrant experience. Promised by single mom Lucía (Martha Reyes Arias) that their move from Mexico to Albuquerque will result in a trip to Disneyland, they instead find themselves locked in a squalid apartment all day while she juggles a pair of low-income jobs. The line she feeds her Spanish-speaking children to get them hyped — “I want to go Disney!” — embodies the tragicomic...

‘Los Lobos’: Film Review
Image
An already moving film is given an unforeseen blush of relevance in these trying times by refracting an immigration story through the prism of a childhood experience of forced isolation. In Samuel Kishi Leopo’s tender and sincere “Los Lobos,” it is not a virus but poverty, uncertain legal status and stranger danger that makes the world outside the little family’s dingy apartment into a perilous place. Still, the rhythms of quarantine are painfully recognizable — the bursts of creativity followed by long stretches of boredom, the closeness and the squabbling, the intense yearning to be out in the world, nose pressed against the window pane.

For Max and Leo (two superbly natural performances from real-life brothers Maximiliano and Leonardo Najar Marquez), the loneliness is exacerbated because of the strangeness of this new country, with only the far-off promise of a trip to “Disney” to look forward to. Brought across...

Los Lobos, When Liberty Burns, Ema, White Lie Winners at Miami 2020
Los Lobos
I was fortunate to attend the first half of Miami Film Festival this month, before it was sadly forced to cancel due to the pandemic. It was my first time attending, and I was blown away not only by the quality and variety of excellent films, but the amazing staff and volunteers. As part of the attending press, I was also a part of the critics' jury, which is always an honour and a difficulty to choose between amazing films. Thought the festival did not complete its run, all the juries were able to complete their work remotely, and awards were announced earlier today. The biggest prize of the festival, the Knight Made in Mia Feature Award, (deservedly) went to When Liberty Burns; Los Lobos...

Joni Mitchell
Joni Mitchell at 75: Friends and Admirers Honor an Icon at Moving Tribute Show
Joni Mitchell
Given the jazz-inflected complexities and somber, introspective tone of Joni Mitchell’s most vibrant work, the skill and magnetism of the artists who took the stage on the first of two nights celebrating her 75th birthday at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at L.A.’s the Music Center felt all the more impressive. Over the course of a breathless two-and-a-half hours, a carousel of musicians — some of her decades-old familiars like Graham Nash and James Taylor, others fresher talents like Brandi Carlile and Norah Jones — took turns paying tribute to...

Robert Hunter on Grateful Dead’s Early Days, Wild Tours, ‘Sacred’ Songs
Image
In May 1965, Robert Hunter popped into a pizza parlor in Menlo Park, California, to see his friend Jerry Garcia play in his new electric band, the Warlocks. “They were good, just dandy,” recalls Hunter, sitting in the living room of his San Rafael, California, home. “It was hard to believe Jerry in a rock & roll band, I’ve got to say. He was a folk musician. But then to become a rock & roll band, him and Bill and Weir and Pigpen—it was amusing. It just seemed unlikely, and it...
