Biography

    • This Hollywood costume designer is best known for his creation of the strapless black gown worn by Rita Hayworth in Gilda (1946). He also designed the gowns worn by Loretta Young during her swirling entrances in her "Loretta Young Show" on TV during the 50's and 60's. (Decades later, he and Miss Young would marry.)

  • Known for designing gowns made of nude color net covered in crystal beads. He did this first for Marlene Dietrich, then for Marilyn Monroe, who sang "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" in it.
  • Costume designer for two Oscar Best Picture winners Les fous du roi (1949) and Tant qu'il y aura des hommes (1953), and three other nominees Comment l'esprit vient aux femmes (1950), Ouragan sur le Caine (1954) and Picnic (1955), as well as being part of the costume department for three more nominees Jugement à Nuremberg (1961), La nef des fous (1965) and Devine qui vient dîner... (1967).
