Quotes

  • On being awarded NEA Jazz Master honor in 2010; "Aside from my American citizenship, which I received in 2001, I can think of no greater honor I could receive from my country."
  • [speaking in 1993] Yeah, I had a hangup. A little bit here, a little bit there, and that was it. It was the culture of the time - the long hours, having to produce every night, needing stimulation. I guess you're young and fearless and think you're going to live forever.
  • I went back to L.A. not long ago. It hasn't changed. Hollywood has that same stale feeling. The talk Is just diets and movies. Now New York: New York I love. A very fierce city, very competitive. It recharges your batteries. They're sharp there. I like it. I can be very, very competitive at the right times. Los Angeles is very you know laid back. New York is up front: best art, best food,, best.... I don't sleep very much and New York is very good for the insomniacs.
