In 1979, at the age of 19, Lister had a script produced for the hit British TV cop series The Professionals (1977). After submitting a spec script about Doyle being trapped on a hijacked plane (which would have been too expensive to film) Lister pitched another plot idea to the producers, who asked him to develop it. This storyline became the episode "The Purging of CI5.".
