Netflix has announced a slate of Chinese-language films and series, headlined by fantasy series Agent From Above, which the streamer says “boasts extensive visual effects that are seldom seen in a local series”.

Produced with Singapore’s mm2 Entertainment and Taiwan’s Good Films Production, the series is set against an oriental universe of “gods, monsters, humans and ghosts”. The story follows a former drug addict who is recruited to do the bidding of legendary Chinese god San Tai Zi as redemption for his sins.

Taiwanese star Kai Ko heads the cast of the series, which also stars Wang Po-Chieh, Hsueh Shih-ling, Buffy Chen and Johnny Yang. Donnie Lai directs with Good Films’ Rita Chuang as the lead producer.

“We’re committed to investing in and creating high-quality Chinese-language shows that we know will appeal to more audiences in Taiwan and around the world,” said Netflix Chinese-language content manager Jerry Zhang.

Netflix has greenlit a trio of series across Japan, Australia and Taiwan, featuring top talent.

Japanese sitcom “Let’s Get Divorced” follows a rookie politician and his actor wife who struggle with their marriage life and they decide to split up. However, their parents and agents don’t allow them to do it. It is co-written by Japan’s top scriptwriters Kankuro Kudo and Shizuka Oishi and the cast includes Tori Matsuzaka, Riisa Naka, Ryo Nishikido, Yuka Itaya, Koji Yamamoto and Arata Furuta.

The series is directed by Fuminori Kaneko, Ryosuke Fukuda and Takuya Sakaue and the TBS Sparkle production is produced by Aki Isoyama and Itsumi Katsuno with Naomi Satoh executive producing for Netflix. It will bow in 2023.

Netlfix has unveiled a trio of new series from the Apac region. Boy Swallows Universe, from Australia, is an adaptation of the book of the same name and will be turned into an eight x 1-hour show. John Collee (Master and Commander) is penning the adaptation, which comes from Brouhaha Entertainment Australia. The novel is a coming-of-age story set in Brisbane’s violent working class suburban fringe.

Separately, the streamer has set Copycat Killer, an adaptation of Japanese crime novel Mohohan penned by genre fiction writer Miyabe Miyuki. The project comes from Taiwan and will be directed by Chang Jung-chi and Chang Heng-ju, with a cast that include Wu Kang-ren, Alice Ko, Ruby Lin. It will be produced by Greener Grass Production, which was behind Netflix’s Chinese-language series The Victims’ Game.

Young filmmaker Teddy Chin has a background in acting and in 2020 he presents 3 films as a director: “In My Heart”, “Good Wealth 2020” and finally “Miss Andy”. The latter was actually completed in 2018, but it is having a festival run now after being screened at the 15th Osaka Asian Film Festival in March this year. The movie deals with a hot and difficult topic – the acceptance in society of transgender people – and tells the story of the sympathetic titular character and her struggle to be accepted by her makeshift new family.

While there may be a serious lack of theatrical horror coming our way this Halloween season, fear not genre fans, as we have over 15 different horror and sci-fi titles making their way onto smaller screens this October, which should help take the sting off a bit. Several great films I happened to catch earlier on this year at various festivals – The Greasy Strangler, In A Valley of Violence and Under the Shadow – are all making their VOD debuts this month, and you also have the remastered version of Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm and the series final sequel, Phantasm: Ravager, to look forward to as well.

Exclusive: Wartime drama stars Zhou Xun [pictured] and Eddie Peng.

Distribution Workshop is launching sales at Hong Kong’s Filmart on Ann Hui’s The Great Escape, starring Zhou Xun and Eddie Peng, a war drama set during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong.

Produced by Bona Film Group and Class Limited, the film is shooting in Guangdong and Hong Kong. Roger Lee is on board as producer and the cast also includes Guo Tao (White Deer Plain).

The story follows a group of plucky youths fighting for Hong Kong’s freedom when Japanese forces occupied the city during the Second World War.

New titles on Distribution Workshop’s slate also include Liu Guonan’s romantic comedy The Wedding Game, starring Sammi Cheng, and Yip Wai Man’s thriller Phantom Of The Theatre, starring Ruby Lin, Tony Yang and Simon Yam. Both films are in post-production.

Im Global has picked up international rights to Stephen Chow’s comedy The Mermaid, which grossed a record $41m on its opening day (Feb 8) in China.

Through its fast-growing Anthem division, Im Global has also picked up Zao Wang’s The Precipice Game, produced by Shanghai-based Fundamental Films.

Released on the first day of the Chinese New Year holiday, The Mermaid’s opening day box office is the biggest ever for a Chinese title and second only to Furious 7’s $63m opening day haul. Slick, polished, compelling entertainment with impeccable production values, Zhang Yang's multi-faceted character drama Driverless would make quite the advert for the new, modern China if not for the impressive collection of problems, poor decisions and psychological issues the protagonists have to struggle with.

It centres around a single event where several people happen to cross paths, and yes, the narrative starts with that event, then cuts repeatedly backwards in time to show how everyone came to be in the same place at once. (What were these films compared to before Alejandro Iñárritu came along, anyway?)

Their problems all stem from the hectic pace of urban life on the mainland; there's the career executive (Liu Ye, City of Life and Death, The Underdog Knight) whose marriage is running on fumes and whose university sweetheart (Gao Yuanyuan, Season of Good Rain, City of Life and Death) has just turned up out...

There's the ghost of a fairly good film in Cai Xin's You Deserve To Be Single, but it's flailing desperately under the sheer volume of trite, saccharine clichés and hysterically overt product placement piled up on top of it. The cast eke a surprising amount of dramatic mileage from what initially seems like merely one more tired mainland Chinese romantic comedy, but the director and screenwriter never pause for long enough to really let the characters or the story breathe, and You Deserve To Be Single ends up frustratingly bland and largely forgettable as a result.

There certainly was a time when filmmakers from mainland China didn't dabble too much in making blockbusters. Obviously, Sophie's Revenge looks like score of other romantic comedies you've seen. Sophie (Zhang Ziyi), a comic book artist/writer, has been in relation with Jeff (Ji-seob So), a surgeon, for two years. While they were supposed to get married, Jeff falls for Joanna (Bingbing Fan), a movie star, after he had operated her. Obviously, Sophie is devastated and she doesn't want to face her mom who organized the mariage. With two months left before the day, Sophie will try to win Jeff back with the help of her two best friends, Lucy (Ruby Lin) and Lilly (Chen Yao).
