Fifteen years after the finale, Loststar Terry O'Quinn shares an intriguing idea about a revival. The veteran performer was instrumental to the early success of the game-changing ABC series. In his role as the enigmatic Locke, O'Quinn portrayed the one character that many on the island looked to as their hope of surviving and returning home safely.
O'Quinn would remain part of the Lost cast throughout the show's six seasons, including the divisive series finale that premiered in May 2010. That unforgettable final episode has received something of a reclamation in the years since, with viewers and television scholars arguing that the polarizing ending is actually underrated.
During an interview with ScreenRant for Resident Alien season 4, O'Quinn shared his pitch for revisiting Lost. The actor, who recurs as Peter Batch in Resident Alien, was asked about reuniting with former co-star Harold Perrineau on the horror drama From. August will be a pretty distressing month for fans of Lost, but those in the U.S. have nothing to worry about — yet. The award-winning series remains one of the greatest of all time, having impacted numerous subsequent TV projects and popular culture at large. Comprising six seasons and 121 episodes, Lost ran from September 22, 2004, to May 23, 2010, and was eventually released on a few streaming platforms, including Netflix. Sadly, the sci-fi drama’s time on the streamer is about to come to an end globally, with only a few months left for subscribers in the U.S. as well.
Netflix acquired the rights to Lost in July 2024, as part of a deal with Disney, covering both the U.S. and worldwide markets. What’s on Netflix has now announced that all six seasons of the series will be removed from the streamer in international regions on August 15, as the last day...

When Lost first hit TV screens in 2004, it instantly became one of ABC’s biggest hits. A plane crash, a mysterious island, and a cast of strangers trying to survive – the show kept viewers on the edge of their seats. But what many don’t know is that Lost didn’t come out of nowhere. The idea actually started with something far simpler: a reality show.
That’s right – ABC wanted a scripted series inspired by the success of Survivor, the hit competition where players are stranded on a remote island. What came next was a creative storm that turned a basic survival idea into one of the most iconic shows in history. Let’s dive deeper!
Survivor, Conan O’Brien, and Tom Hanks’ Cast Away inspired ‘Lost’
Lost completely transformed the TV genre with its high-stakes drama and gripping visuals. But how it came to be also had its own interesting story.

Lost Star Reflects on Controversial Finale 15 Years Later: 'I Think I Have Some Understanding of It'
It's now been 15 years since Lost wrapped up its run, concluding on ABC after six seasons. The finale was controversial at the time, and that's not lost on Jin-Soo Kwon actor Daniel Dae Kim, though he personally was satisfied with how it turned out.
On the 15th anniversary of the Lost finale, Kim reflected on the controversy in a conversation with People. While the series left some loose ends for fans to endlessly discuss, Kim feels that the finale still served its purpose in that it brought "closure" to the show's characters. He also admits that he may only "think" that he has an understanding of the ending, but he's nevertheless happy with the finale.

It's hard to imagine that over 20 years have passed since audiences all around the world were first introduced to the diverse group of passengers of the ill-fated Flight 815 in the 2004 cultural phenomenon Lost, a mind-bending sci-fi supernatural series that focuses on the traumatized survivors as they find themselves stranded on a mysterious tropical island in the South Pacific. Touting a stacked ensemble cast led by Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly, Josh Holloway, and Naveen Andrews, the smash hit original has widely been regarded as one of the greatest television shows of all time, running for six spellbinding seasons.
Party of Five alum Matthew Fox famously headlined the sci-fi staple, portraying the brilliant-yet-haunted surgeon Jack Shephard, who swiftly emerges as the de facto leader of his fellow survivors and experiences an epic spiritual transformation throughout the course of the acclaimed series. However, it's hard to imagine anyone other than Fox as the capable Jack.

Almost 15 years since it ended, debates still rage about Lost’s final season, and in particular, its finale. For a sizable portion of the fanbase, “The End” felt nothing less than a waste of time that refused to answer the mysteries they’d spent six years investing in, and seemingly proved the writers made up as they went along. Others felt “The End” was a beautiful cap on an all-time great series, prioritizing the character arcs over the mysteries and bringing things to an emotionally satisfying close. Wherever you land, there’s one thing seemingly everyone can agree upon: it’s not Lost’s worst overall episode.
That dishonor goes to “Stranger in a Strange Land,” the ninth episode of Lost’s third season. Even by the standards of a season that saw dwindling ratings and slow plot progression (at least up until the incredible finale), this installment only incrementally...

Despite its legendarily divisive ending, ABC's Losthas still gone down as one of the greatest TV series of all time, setting the standard for "mystery box" shows ever since. Across its six seasons, it boasts some of the most acclaimed and memorable moments in TV history, from its groundbreaking pilot to its infamous flash-forward twist at the end of Season 3. Fans of the series no doubt have different picks for the best season, whether it's Season 1's setup of the island's many mysteries, or Season 3, which opened up the world of the show in all kinds of fantastic ways.
While the show's storyline got weirder and harder to follow in later seasons, Season 4 just might be the series at its very best, an ideal fusion of its island intrigue, high-concept sci-fi, and character development. It features some of the series' biggest payoffs, both from a plot standpoint as well as an emotional one,...

Stephen King has reviewed Apple TV+'s best sci-fi show, making it hard not to believe Lost finally has two perfect replacements. Created by Jeffrey Lieber, J. J. Fortunately, the show's incredible production value and massive roster also offered massive returns after it went on to become one of the most celebrated "mystery box" shows of all time.

A common industry joke in 2004 was that ABC stood for "Already Been Canceled," because the network was often fourth place in ratings. The executive in charge of the network knew his time in the role was limited.

Lost became an instant hit when the series debuted on ABC in 2004. Over two decades later, one of the show's writers, Drew Goddard, addressed the possibility of revisiting the franchise.
Speaking to Variety, Goddard said that while there have been no official discussions about a revival, he will never rule out the possibility. "I loved working on that show so much, and I loved what we did," he explained. "I always feel strongly that I don't want to just do karaoke of the show I used to do. I'd only be interested if we felt like we could do something special and new within the construct of the show. And then some of it just comes down to time and appetite. So there's no plan for it today. But never say never."

As a television show draws to an end, its scriptwriters find themselves confronted with the need to tie up any loose narrative threads for their main characters, in order to provide a fitting conclusion and a satisfactory sense of closure. There's arguably no tidier way to conclude a character's narrative arc than by killing them off, a tried and tested method of storytelling that lends an inimitable air of finality to proceedings. Accordingly, the final season of a television show presents a prime opportunity to kill off its main characters like no other.
While a host of standout shows killed their main characters early in proceedings and still went on to find great success, many of the best television shows ever conceived prefer to save the most prominent character deaths for their last season. When Lost debuted on ABC 20 years ago, its popularity was a surprise to everyone from the producers to the studio. A heavily serialized story set on an island with monsters and mystery didn't seem like a formula that would work in the pre-streaming age. One reason the series remains so popular is that many of those big questions seemingly remain unanswered. One of Lost's biggest early mysteries was explained in the pilot episode, but most fans thought it was mistake made by sloppy filmmaking. Before fans even knew about the ghostly island whispers or even what the Smoke Monster was, the questions that kept them tuned in were more personal.

The premise of Sherwood Schwartz's popular 1964 sitcom "Gilligan's Island" is handily explained in its theme song: five passengers check into a three-hour boat tour, run by the skipper and first mate of a tiny tourist boat called the S.S. Minnow. The ship hits some bad weather and is thrown miles off course, landing on an uncharted desert isle. The seven tourists become seven stranded castaways. No phones, no lights, no motorcars, not a single luxury. Like "Robinson Crusoe," it's as primitive as can be. The septet have to learn to live together, usually to comedic effect.
Gilligan (Bob Denver) was the above-mentioned first mate, and his innocent cluelessness and tendency to bumble often thwarted the castaways' ability to escape. He shared the island with his Skipper (Alan Hale), a professor (Russell Johnson), a pair of married millionaires (Natalie Schafer and Jim Backus), a farmer (Dawn Wells), and a...

Two decades ago, the debut of ABC's Lost might have been the peak of an era of television that has since passed on. It's fitting, because the show about castaways on a magical island was all about letting go and facing change. Yet, even though the producers spent years crafting a definitive ending for the series, some viewers don't really understand Lost. In fairness, however, that's part of the fun. In the new Getting Lost documentary, series co-creator Damon Lindeolf reveals the finale of HBO's The Sopranos inspired them. Specifically, the ambiguity of the ending and creator David Chase's unwavering refusal to try to explain it.
Dealing with themes of identity, forgiveness and even higher philosophical ideas, Lost is a series that's meant to be pondered, not explained like the equation hidden in a math word problem. Some things are meant to be open questions. Was "Dave" ever real,...

Lost is one of the rare shows that completely captured the public consciousness. After the success of the reality TV show Survivor in 2000, the J. J. Abrams, Jeffrey Lieber, and Damon Lindelof-led show featured castaways struggling to survive after suffering through a plane crash and landing on an isolated island. The show began in 2004 and came to an end in 2010 with a controversial episode that seemingly unveiled that every character was dead all along.
Considering how popular the show was earning 16 million viewers for its first season it is easy to imagine that viewers know everything that there is to know about the show. Yet, despite many of the mysteries receiving divisive resolutions, there are some facts that viewers still may not know.

Lost star Michael Emerson explains the reactions to his casting as Ben Linus on the hit fantasy thriller.
Speaking to TheWrap, Emerson was asked if he had any experiences with fans unloading their personal theories about Lost during his time on the series. "People had their theories, yeah, and they also had their gut reactions and opinions about characters," Emerson responded. "When I first appeared, people would come up and say, 'I'm not watching that show anymore. You've ruined it. It's not the show I want.' And I thought, 'Well, what did you want? Did you think it was Survivor, like, this is a romance about good-looking castaways? No, there's a parable here. There's an allegory. It's good and evil here. We're in an esoteric space. Now, come on.'"

20 years ago, “Lost” premiered on ABC and made TV history.
The series premiere was already the most expensive TV pilot ever made, but from the moment Jack (Matthew Fox) opened his eye in the pilot created by Damon Lindelof, J.J. Abrams, and Jeffrey Lieber, nothing would ever be the same. Over the course of six seasons and 121 episodes, “Lost” earned Emmys and accolades, amassed a hugely dedicated and intrepid fanbase, and changed the television landscape.
A lot has changed in the two decades since that series premiere. For some, the show’s legacy was tarnished by later seasons and particularly the Season 6 finale (agree to disagree). More troublingly, writers and actors from the “Lost” heyday have spoken out about what they found to be a sexist, racist, and generally toxic work environment. Actor Harold Perrineau was actually speaking honestly about his experiences back when he was still a series regular,...

When the pilot of "Lost" aired on ABC in September of 2004, it became an instant hit for the network and catapulted its sprawling cast to stardom in the process. Created by J.J. Abrams alongside Jeffrey Lieber and Damon Lindelof — the last of whom would eventually become a co-showrunner with Carlton Cuse — "Lost" begins in the immediate aftermath of a massive plane crash on a deserted island, but things quickly get very, very complicated. When Oceanic flight 815 crashes on that island while traveling from Sydney to Los Angeles, the audience is introduced to the survivors ... and throughout the first season, they all get a closer look through flashbacks set before they ever boarded the doomed flight.
I should say this up-front: the cast of "Lost" is huge, so not every single important character will get a spotlight here. As far as the core cast is concerned,...

It’s been almost 20 years to the day since “Lost” premiered on ABC (September 22), which means the drama series created by J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof, and Jeffrey Lieber is once again making TV headlines for its major anniversary. To celebrate two decades of a show that undeniably changed the television landscape, TV critics Emily St. James and Noel Murray penned “Lost: Back to the Island,” a series of essays taking readers through the series one episode at-a-time from pilot to finale.
With over 100 essays and 40 that are intentionally longer to add further context to key moments in the series, Murray and St. James mirror the journey of viewers watching “Lost” for the first time. This is not a show whose ending perfectly mirrored the beginning, but it was also not borne of a time when shows like that were the norm. With its chronological analysis, “Back to the Island” illustrates...

I know it doesn’t feel like 2004 was 20 years ago, but it was, which means many great TV shows just turned 20 years old.
Seriously, 2004 is a sneaky good year for new TV premieres. Most of the titles on this list of good TV shows turning 20 years old in 2024 were broadcast hits. The cable networks had a decent market share in the early 2000s, but we’re still a decade before the streaming industry changed the TV game.
At this point in TV history, we’re still seven years before the Game of Thrones premiere. Remember that, please!
Let’s get the list started with the best show of 2004!

The thrilling pilot episode and complex characters kept audiences hooked on Lost's mystery and drama for six seasons. Matthew Fox's portrayal of Jack as a relatable hero was a major reason for the show's monumental success. Lost's personal touches, timely release, and unique storytelling captured viewers in a pre-streaming era of television.
Javier Grillo-Marxuach, the writer and producer behind one of the biggest TV shows of all time, Lost, has explained why the science fiction adventure show was so popular at the time and why its still so popular 20 years later. In a new piece for Vanity Fair, Grillo-Marxuach, who penned several episodes throughout the first two seasons, puts a lot of Losts success on the pilot episode, which introduced audiences to the passengers of Oceanic Flight 815 and the mysterious tropical island they crash-land on.
Lost attracted an audience because it had a thrilling, high-budget, high-concept pilot that described an irresistible mystery.

It's wild to realize that it's been twenty years already since Lost debuted. First premiering on ABC in 2004, Lost was one of the last big network TV shows, the kind where we gathered around the proverbial watercooler week after week for six seasons to discuss our theories of what it all meant. Just as much as the Jeffrey Lieber, J.J. Abrams, and Damon Lindelof series changed on screen over those 121 wild episodes, it changed even more before a single scene was ever filmed.

Lost actor Maggie Grace recently reflected on her role, revealing her exit from the iconic show is "still the worst heartbreak" of her career and that she was "devastated" after her character died in the sixth episode of Season 2. Grace played Shannon Rutherford on the hit ABC drama series.

Arguably one of the most iconic shows of the 2000s, if not ever, Lost stood out in the television landscape — in part due to the size and diversity of its ensemble cast. In 2004, the survivors of Ocean Flight 815, each with a difficult past, found themselves stranded on a mysterious island after their plane crashed 1,000 off course in ABC's hit show Lost. For six seasons, the series followed the survivors as they tried to leave the island, clashed with its other mysterious inhabitants and discovered that it was anything but ordinary. Lost was created by Jeffrey Lieber, J. J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof and ended in 2010 with a divisive finale, although the series as a whole is often regarded as one of the best of all time. It received multiple Emmy Awards, including for Best Drama in 2005.
