‘We Strangers’ Review: A Wry, Socially Conscious Study of a Cleaning Lady Who Pretends to Be Clairvoyant
Image
In “We Strangers,” Rayelle (Kirby) confesses to her mother (Tina Lifford) that she doesn’t have dreams. Perhaps she doesn’t have time for them, or else she’s simply too exhausted to hang onto anything else in her head after spending her days as a cleaning lady, monitoring her every move so as not to become any part of the mess she picks up for other people. Still, this isn’t to say she can’t have fantasies in Anu Valia’s absorbing character study, except like everything else her life, they’re not for herself when her observational skills lead some to think she’s psychic.

After honing her craft directing prestige TV shows such as “The Afterparty” and “Shrill,” Valia makes an aesthetically striking feature debut that may impress even more with the clear eyes she brings to the trickle effect of privilege, envisioning the ability to...

Jane Seymour Slams Ageism Against Women: ‘It’s a Real, Really Large Issue’
Image
Jane Seymour is speaking out against ageism and the idea that women have a “sell-by date.” The 73-year-old actress is fighting back against the social phenomenon that is “unseenism,” which describes the notion that women get devalued as they age in society. “Unseenism” also often leads doctors to dismiss the medical concerns of women above a certain age. “A lot of women, sort of [age] 50 on, just kind of hide away and expect not to be listened to or heard,” the Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman star tells People. “It’s a real, really large issue in the medical world because you have to empower women to actually stand up for their rights.” Although she is a two-time Golden Globe winner and Emmy winner, Seymour still feels unseen not only in Hollywood but also in her day-to-day life, like when she goes to get her car repaired. That is why she joined...

‘Heaven Down Here’: Krystal Joy Brown on ‘Beautiful’ & ‘Shocking’ Hallmark Movie Twist
Image
Little did Imani (Krystal Joy Brown) know how much her life was going to change just by being stranded in the diner in which she works due to a snowstorm in Heaven Down Here. With her were her boss Dan (Richard Harmon), local pastor Felix (Juan Riedinger), and, most importantly, hospice nurse Clara (Tina Lifford), who went on to introduce her to someone who would change her and her children’s lives. Imani noticed that Clara had a photo of her as a baby (and the birthmark to prove it’s her), and the other woman asked what she knew about her adoption. “My parents never gave me much information. When I got older, I pushed, but they weren’t forthcoming. I figured it was something ugly like I was abandoned, so I didn’t press.” Clara revealed that she knew who her grandmother is: her employer Nancy (Phylicia Rashad), whose daughter — Imani’s mother,...

Lawmen Bass Reeves: Is Moody O’Neil Based On A Real Person? Inspirations Explained
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Lawmen: Bass Reeves episode 7.

Moody O'Neil is a fictional character in Lawmen: Bass Reeves whose escape challenges Bass Reeves' moral principles as a Deputy U.S. Marshal. Moody initially willingly surrenders to Bass and seems indifferent about being sentenced to death for murder. Moody's arrest adds to Bass Reeves' guilty conscience, which has been haunting him since arresting Jackson Cole.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves introduces another new character that challenges Bass Reeves' moral principles as Deputy U.S. Marshal. Moody O'Neil, played by Tina Lifford, is a seemingly calm and nonviolent character who poses no threat to Bass Reeves (David Oyelowo) and his sidekick Billy Crow (Forrest Goodluck). The same can be said of Willy, a cook that Billy introduces to Bass at the beginning of Lawmen: Bass Reeves episode 7 who ends up helping Moody escape from captivity after Bass and Billy lawfully apprehend her. Willy (Ivan Mbakop...

‘Heaven Down Here’: How Mickey Guyton’s Real-Life Romance Inspired Holiday Movie
Image
Christmas Eve at Rocko’s Diner in Philadelphia finds a menu short on holiday spirit for four struggling strangers stuck during a snowstorm. Heaven Down Here is inspired by the 2020 country hit of the same name by Mickey Guyton, who executive produces the Hallmark movie and, says fellow executive producer Laurie Pozmantier, “gave us tidbits into her personal life and her husband’s personal life [for the story].” Those tales include worried widow Imani (Krystal Joy Brown), a broke waitress separated from her two children when grumpy boss Dan (Richard Harmon) forces her to work the holiday. During the night, Imani bonds with earnest diner Father Felix (Juan Riedinger), who has regrets involving his estranged adult son. “You don’t usually look at a pastor thinking that they’ve got something going on, but [Felix] needs advice too,” Pozmantier says. Also stranded is determined hospice nurse Clara (Tina Lifford), who longs to help obstinate...

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,’ Will Smith, Angela Bassett Win Big at 2023 NAACP Image Awards
Image
The 54th NAACP Image Awards, which aired on CBS from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium Saturday night, has wrapped. Queen Latifah hosted the proceedings, which honored the best in Black entertainment for the proceeding year. That film received another big award in the form of Best Supporting Actress for Angela Bassett, who is by far now the frontrunner for the Academy Award. It was one of two awards of the night for Bassett, as she also won Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her role in “9-1-1.”

Ava DuVernay’s Poetic ‘Queen Sugar’ Series Finale Emphasizes the Everlasting Nature of Family
Image
After seven seasons, the Bordelon family’s journey came to an end. “Queen Sugar” signed off on Tuesday night with a poetic series finale centered around the importance of family — in all its forms.

Series creator Ava DuVernay wrote the finale, titled “For They Existed,” and returned to the director’s chair for the first time since helming the pilot and second episode.

While we all know troubles don’t last always, the Bordelon family’s difficult times on Queen Sugar seem to dwell longer than most.

Thankfully, that trend shifted when the Season 6 finale of the endearing OWN drama aired this Tuesday and finally gave the Bordelons a much-needed win. Sam Landry had tried to blackmail the family into selling their farm to him by using Ralph Angel’s crime as leverage.

‘Queen Sugar’ to End With Season 7 at OWN
Image
“Queen Sugar” has been renewed for Season 7 at OWN, with that season set to be the show’s last. Writing on the new season has begun, with production set to begin in early 2022.

“To everything, there is a season,” said series creator Ava DuVernay. “And my producing partner Paul Garnes and I have had seven gorgeous seasons making ‘Queen Sugar’ with a remarkable cast and crew, alongside our partners at OWN and Warner Bros. Television. To write and produce seven seasons of a modern drama centered on a Black family is a radical act in our industry and a triumph that has far exceeded every hope I held. Now I feel strongly that the story, which began as a sunrise of a suggestion from Oprah, is ready for its sunset as a dream fully realized. ‘Queen Sugar’ has been one of the true joys of my career and my gratitude is buoyant and boundless.

Tina Lifford Previews the ‘Queen Sugar’ Finale & Hallmark’s ‘A Holiday in Harlem’
Image
Looks like Queen Sugar‘s Aunt Vi has been doing some moonlighting. That’s because fan favorite Tina Lifford, who plays the passionate and fiery Violet Bordelon on OWN’s hit drama series, is also one of the stars of the holiday film, A Holiday In Harlem, airing Sunday on Hallmark. The roles share some similarities as both Aunt Vi and Mama Belle, her character in Harlem, believe in the “blood is thicker” axiom, and aren’t afraid to steer family members in the direction they feel is best. “Mama Belle is old school in that she knows that family is the glue and it’s what’s important,” Lifford recently told TV Insider. If that sounds a lot like Aunt Vi, Lifford agrees and said of her Queen Sugar alter ego, “she leads with love and yes, she has opinions, and yes, she can dig her heels in, and yes,...

‘Queen Sugar’ EP Paul Garnes On Ava DuVernay Co-Written Season 5 Finale, Chauvin Verdict, Chadwick Boseman & Covid Lessons
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains details of Queen Sugar’s Season 5 finale

“Looking back over the season, as emotional as it was for people to watch it when it aired, it was very emotional even when we shot it,” says Queen Sugar executive producer Paul Garnes of the fifth season of the Ava DuVernay created series and its Onward finale last night.

After a 10-episode run that chronicled and detailed the coronavirus pandemic, police violence, the death of George Floyd, and the politics of division on Black America, the OWN drama based on Natalie Baszile’s 2014 novel took the lacerated Bordelon siblings, their offspring, extended family and rural Louisiana community to an optimistic place, or sorts.

The DuVernay and showrunner Anthony Sparks co-penned Season 5 finale saw a Covid infected Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) reach out to ex-husband Davis West (Timon Kyle Durrent) and find new depths to the initial dismay of...
