    He first fled to Paris where he took part in the movies "Chéri-Bibi" (1938), "Le drame de Shanghai" (1938) and "Gibraltar" (1938) , but when France was occupied by the Germans too he fled again, this time to the USA. There he was able to continue his film career indeed but he only got offered minor roles.
