Steph Curry isn’t used to missing — though he was never much one for twos.
Peacock has canceled mockumentary Mr. Throwback, NBA superstar Curry’s acting debut (Ok, so he played himself on HBO’s Ballers once) and the first scripted, live-action series produced by his Unanimous Media banner, after just one season. The cancellation is due to a lack of viewership, The Hollywood Reporter is told, not quality.
Mr. Throwback debuted to a pretty strong reception (although THR‘s review contended it “Never quite lives up to Curry’s charm or pedigree.”). The six-episode season one has an 86 percent rating among TV critics on Rotten Tomatoes and is at 80 percent with the audience. (Among “Top Critics,” it’s at 67 percent, lower but still “Fresh,” though that only accounts for six reviews — a relatively small sample size.)

All good stories must come to an end. Peacock has trimmed its original programming, canceling Based on a True Story after two seasons.
Per Deadline, despite earning largely positive reviews from critics, Based on a True Story will not return for a third season on Peacock. Created by Craig Rosenberg, the dark comedy thriller series is a satire of the true crime genre with elements loosely inspired by true events. Both seasons follow married couple Ava and Nathan Bartlett, played by Cuoco and Chris Messina respectively, as they capitalize on America's growing obsession with true crime by launching a podcast with serial killer Matt Pierce (Tom Bateman). The second, and now final, season of eight episodes was released in its entirety on Peacock back in November 2024.

The comedies “Based on a True Story” and “Mr. Throwback” have been canceled at Peacock, Variety has learned exclusively. “Based on a True Story” had debuted its second season in November 2024, while “Mr. Throwback” aired its one and only season at the NBCUniversal streamer in August 2024.
Peacock does not release regular viewership information, so gauging the exact audience of either show is difficult, but both received solid reviews upon their release.
“Based on a True” story starred Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina as a financially struggling couple who decide to start a true crime podcast to investigate whether or not their plumber is in fact a serial killer. The cast also included Tom Bateman, Liana Liberato, and Priscilla Quintana. The show originally premiered in 2023.
Craig Rosenberg created the series and served as an executive producer. Annie Weisman served as writer, showrunner, and an executive producer on Season 2 with Jaclyn Moore also writing and executive producing.

A month after NBC broadcast live Steph Curry’s heroics during the Men’s Basketball Olympics final that helped USA clinch the title, the Golden State Warriors star will be back on the network. NBC will air the first episode of the Peacock original comedy series Mr. Throwback, starring Curry and Adam Pally, on Sept. 12. The pilot will run in the anchor Thursday 9 Pm slot from the network’s “Must See TV” era.
The move is designed to give additional exposure to Mr. Throwback, which premiered Aug. 8 on Peacock alongside the streamer’s Olympics coverage that included Curry & Co.’s quest for Olympic gold.
The half-hour, co-created/executive produced by David Caspe, ranks as a top 5 Peacock original comedy series launch based on its opening weekend viewing out of 19 comedy shows the NBCU streamer has introduced so far. Not surprisingly, 77% of the accounts who watched Mr. Throwback also watched basketball at the Olympics.

Creative partners Adam Pally and David Caspe didn’t anticipate that the “third in the Pally-Caspe trilogy” would star one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
Pally, a dedicated member of his own rec league basketball team, and Caspe, an “enormous basketball fan and even bigger Stephen Curry fan,” could not believe that the four-time NBA champion wanted to work on a show with them.
“I would not be shocked if we just got a phone call Thursday morning when the show’s supposed to premiere. That’s like, ‘Yeah, Stephen decided not to do it,’” Caspe told TheWrap. “I’d be like, ‘That makes sense. God bless him.’”
The idea for the duo’s mockumentary series “Mr. Throwback” came after an appearance on Ayesha Curry’s HBO Max game show, “About Last Night.”

When Steph Curry Wanted to Become a Sitcom Star, the Minds Behind ‘Happy Endings’ Sprung Into Action
What do you do when one of the biggest sports stars on the planet asks you to write a role for him? If you’re David Caspe and Adam Pally, you think quickly.
The duo — who first worked together on the cult ABC sitcom “Happy Endings,” created by Caspe and starring Pally as Max Blum, a disheveled gay man making ends meet as an unlicensed limousine driver while mooching off his ensemble of Chicago friends — never expected to find themselves writing a mockmentary about Steph Curry. But when the Golden State Warriors star teamed up with his wife Ayesha Curry to host the game show “About Last Night” on what was then called HBO Max in 2022, their comedic fates changed forever.
Each episode of the show featured different celebrity couples answering embarrassing questions about each other, and both Pally and Caspe appeared as guests along with their respective partners. They...

Talk about good sports! Adam Pally has reunited with his Happy Endings creator David Caspe and writers Matthew and Daniel Libman for Peacock’s winning new hoot Mr. Throwback and they’ve recruited an unbeatable roster: SNL standout Ego Nwodim and Golden State Warrior’s phenom Stephen Curry. And yes, he’s got comedic game. Full of sharp dialogue, heart, some Emmy-worthy outbursts by Nwodim, the six-episode mockumentary-style gem “is about forgiveness…and the undeniable power of Stephen Curry,” laughs Matthew Libman, who co-wrote Throwback with brother Daniel and series creator David Caspe. The Golden State Warriors point guard plays a fictionalized version of himself who reconnects with shifty childhood friend Danny Grossman, despite the warnings of their fellow classmate-turned-Steph’s right-hand-woman Kimberly (Nwodim). Having worked together on Happy Endings with Pally, Caspe and the Libmans know how to build a bench and have scored a new one with their central threesome.

As an athlete, Stephen Curry is, apparently, very good. As a TV producer, his track record is mixed, comprising both dizzying highs (I will never stop waiting for more Holey Moley) and shocking lows. As an actor, his talents probably hit their ceiling with his TV commercials for Subway or Cars.com, but when you’re rich and powerful, no one can really stop you from selling Peacock a mockumentary in which you play yourself, no matter how unimpressive you are in the role. Fortunately, Mr. Throwback is very good — so good, in fact, that my harshest criticism of this show about Steph Curry is that it apparently had to star Steph Curry.
The show’s Steph has a lot in common with the one we know: He’s a talented and dominant NBA player who grew up in Charlotte and whose father preceded him in the league; he has...

When Kobe Bryant returned to Philadelphia for his final game, one of the reporters at his press conference was Evan Monsky, Bryant’s former high school basketball teammate at Lower Merion. During the Q&a, Monsky asked Bryant to name the best point guard he ever played with and Bryant, without skipping a beat, saluted “Evan Monsky” as the best passer, before listing the Hall of Famers and All-Stars from his various NBA teams.
It was a good moment because it captured something extremely satisfying in dramatic terms: Every NBA superstar — every superstar in any sport — at some point in their life shared a roster with somebody who did not, in fact, become a superstar themselves. Somebody who may not have played college or even high school ball. That person went on to live a normal life filled with normal highs and lows and probably multiple times every year, that...

“The only premise I could ever really give to people for this show is it’s like if Christopher Guest directed ‘Uncut Gems,’” Adam Pally says, previewing his new series “Mr. Throwback.” The mockumentary show does have a similar shape to Josh and Benny Safdie’s modern crime classic: a so-sad, so-fucked-up Jewish businessman takes on life-threatening mob debts and, in a shameless act of survivalist drive, dogs an NBA star and extracts money from him through a bombardment of white lies.
Only in “Mr. Throwback,” Pally’s character, Danny Grossman, is a former basketball prodigy, the “Jewish Jordan” that once went “100 and 100”. Stephen Curry was his back-up in middle school. But Danny’s career ended early after his alcoholic father and coach (Tracy Letts) is caught in an elaborate lie. Two decades and a failed marriage later, an in-debt Danny is forced to follow in his old man’s footsteps,...

Despite being an NBA mega-star with the Golden State Warriors, Steph Curry is eager to show off his comedy chops in the trailer for Peacock’s Mr. Throwback, which was released on Wednesday.
Curry’s chance to play a comedy hero has come with the Universal Television mockumentary that marks his first scripted TV role and is set to premiere on Aug. 8.
Mr. Throwback
The comedy sees Adam Pally as Danny Grossman, a down-on-his-luck memorabilia dealer who looks for redemption by reuniting with his sixth-grade teammate, basketball legend Curry, who plays himself on screen.
In Mr. Throwback, Curry aims to help his middle school buddy get redemption. “Let’s do a documentary on it,” he says at one point in the trailer. That has the former school buddies joyously traveling on Curry’s private jet and sharing pre-game horse placenta drinks, called “placenta-ritas.”

Peacock has given straight-to-series order to Mr. Throwback, a mockumentary comedy headlined by NBA star Steph Curry and Happy Endings alum Adam Pally. The pickup for the project, from Happy Endings creator David Caspe and writing duo Matthew Libman and Daniel Libman, was announced Wednesday at TCA along with three drama series orders by Peacock.
As Deadline reported exclusively last April, Mr. Throwback was originally set up at NBC for development. A couple of years ago, NBCUniversal installed a centralized development team for NBC, the company’s basic cable networks and Peacock, with projects sometimes shepherded well into development before a decision is made which platform it would go to.
Additionally, NBC in the past year or so has taken a turn toward multi-camera comedies, which cost less to produce than single-camera shows. All of the network’s existing three half-hour series, Night Court, Lopez vs. Lopez and Extended Family,...

Simu Liu is going back to the future. Well, like, five minutes into the future.
Peacock has given a straight-to-series order for an untitled espionage series starring Liu, in which the “Barbie” actor will play first-generation-American intelligence analyst Alexander Hale. He realizes his brain has been hacked, giving the perpetrators access to everything he sees and hears.
James Wan is among the executive producers on the series, which was written and created by Thomas Brandon (“Legacies”). Other EPs on the project include Michael Clear and Rob Hackett from Wan’s Atomic Monster. Danielle Bozzone will oversee the project for the production company, which recently merged with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse.
Wan/Atomic Monster and UCP/Peacock are already collaborating on a contemporary horror thriller now titled “Teacup.” Ian McCulloch is writing that one, and executive producing alongside Wan.

ABC’s ratings-challenged Happy Endings created a cult following thanks to its relatable stories about a group of friends in their late 20s and early 30s. While the comedy helped to launch the careers of stars Eliza Coupe (Jane), Elisha Cuthbert (Alex), Zachary Knighton (Dave), Adam Pally (Max), Damon Wayans Jr. (Brad) and Casey Wilson (Penny), behind the scenes, the Sony-produced series created by David Caspe was effectively its own showrunner training program. As Rutherford Falls creator Sierra Teller Ornelas revealed in a recent Twitter thread, Happy Endings had 23 writers over its three seasons, with an incredible 21 — including assistants — becoming showrunners.
During this week’s TV’s Top 5 podcast, hosts Lesley Goldberg and Daniel Fienberg reunite 14 of the Happy Endings writers to build off Ornelas’ thread and discuss, in light of the ongoing Writers Guild strike, the benefits of having a traditional writers rooms, why having writers on set...

YouTube is clearing its deck, as the service gets ready to unveil its new original programming plans. As part of the spring cleaning of sorts, YouTube series “Champaign Ill,” “Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television,” “Sideswiped,” and “Do You Want to See a Dead Body” won’t be back.
Those shows join previously confirmed cancelled series “Overthinking with Kat & June,” “Youth & Consequences,” and “Origin.”
YouTube isn’t completely wiping down the mat, however. Breakout hit “Cobra Kai” is back for Season 2 on April 24, and “Step Up: High Water,” currently in its second season, continues to perform well for the service. Also, comedy “Liza on Demand,” starring Liza Koshy, and sci-fi drama “Impulse” are both in production for their sophomore releases.
Meanwhile, YouTube hasn’t yet revealed the fates of comedy “Wayne,” which premiered in January, and anthology series “Weird City,” which launched in February.

It’s nice to see her physical comedy chops taken advantage of. She definitely has what it takes to say the one-liners or utilize her physical side. Or better yet, as in this episode, mold both of them together. Mvp...
