First announced in December 2020, the project was expected to feature Rose reprising her role as Tiana from the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog, which revolved around Disney’s first Black princess.

“I too am deeply disappointed that the continuation of Tiana’s journey in series form has been cut short,” adding that the highly anticipated series adaptation had been a “long time coming” and involved “a lot of beautiful work was put into it by all the creatives involved.”

Walt Disney Animation Studios has officially scrapped its Tiana series, which was set to serve as a follow-up to The Princess and The Frog.
According to THR, the project was cancelled as part of the studio's new strategy, which involves moving away from all original longform animated content for the Disney+ streaming service. A spokesperson confirmed there "will be some layoffs in its Vancouver studio as a result of this shift in business strategy."
In addition to Tiana, an untitled feature-length project has also been shelved.
First announced back in 2020, Tiana was being developed as a musical featuring Anika Noni Rose reprising her lead role from the 2009 animated film. The trade report mentions that, despite best efforts, "including several changes to the creative team, Tiana ultimately could not get to where it needed to be given production costs."

While Disney did not respond to request for comment today over the Tiana series cancellation, sources confirm that going forward neither animation studio will be providing long form content for Disney +.

ABC was very mean when it came to cancellations and endings in 2024. Four shows came to an end or were abruptly canceled, while the network announced that a fifth would wrap up in 2025.
2024 was not a good year for a lot of networks. We said goodbye to some great shows, and we’re still salty about some of the cancellations. There were a couple of ABC shows that we wanted to see more of, especially considering they ended with a shortened season due to the pandemic.
We take a look back at the cancellations of 2024. Hopefully, 2025 will be better.

Titan Books offers a deep dive into the animated musical film Spellbound with The Art & Making of Spellbound, and ScreenRant has a look at some key pages. The Skydance Animation movie came to Netflix in November as the company’s second full-length feature film (after 2022’s Luck), and features an impressive cast led by Rachel Zegler as the young Princess Ellian. The movie tells the story of Ellian setting out across the magical world of Lumbria to reverse a curse that has turned her parents into literal monsters.
ScreenRant is excited to offer a look at select pages from The Art & Making of Spellbound that highlight the movie’s visual style and explain how certain artistic decisions were made. The book was written by Ramin Zahed, an LA-based author and journalist whose past film books include Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – The Art of the Movie and The Art of Love,...

Black-ish was a long-running sitcom about the lives of an upper-middle-class Black family living in a predominantly white neighborhood. Andre "Dre" Johnson (Anthony Anderson) grew up in Compton and worries his children are not in touch with their Black roots. While the show is a comedy, Black-ish also examines the nuances of Black identity. Many of Black-ish's best episodes address important, powerful issues.
Dre's perspective is almost always different from that of his wife, parents, children, and colleagues, leading to matters of race, family, and politics being discussed from multiple angles. Because Black-ish was generally a lighthearted comedy, when it delved into topics like police brutality, colorism, and women's health, the episodes carried even more weight. Luckily, the characters in Black-ish are played by talented actors who can deliver heartfelt scenes as well as humorous ones.

Warning: Minor spoilers for Spellbound
Netflix's latest magical family adventure musical, Spellbound is already getting dragged through the mud in the reviews. While the production values are incredibly high, with a star-studded cast and songs written by two of Broadway's greatest songwriters, it's clear from its 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes that this story about familial conflict hasn't left audiences spellbound.
The film follows Elian, the Princess of Lumbria (Rachel Zegler), who has been working with her royal ministers (John Lithgow and Jenifer Lewis) to hide the fact that her parents, the king (Javier Bardem) and queen (Nicole Kidman), have been turned into giant monsters by a curse. When the Oracles of the Sun and Moon (Titus Burgess and Nathan Lane) fail to give any helpful advice and the family secret is revealed, Elian decides to take her parents into the Dark Forest of Eternal Darkness in hopes of finding a cure.

John Lithgow has been a staple in Hollywood movies and TV shows for decades now. Though he has played a handful of leading roles, Lithgow is best known for his memorable supporting characters and villains. He played villains in Cliffhanger (1993), Dexter, and Shrek (2001), and appeared in a supporting capacity in titles like The Crown, Perry Mason, Pet Sematary (2019), Interstellar (2014), and How I Met Your Mother.
At 79 years old, Lithgow continues to stay busy in the world of entertainment, and 2024 has been a standout year for him. John Lithgow has opened up about how his new animated movie triggered feelings of anxiety after previously being recast in two major voice roles. In animation, the final product that audiences see does not necessarily reflect the extensive and complex creative process that brought it to the screen. This includes the fact that the voice-casting process is relatively fluid. Characters take shape over several years, and as a project progresses, studios can sometimes make significant changes to the cast, since re-recording lines is much easier than reshooting live-action scenes.
While this has affected Lithgow more than once, the two-time Oscar nominee has voiced his fair share of animated characters. Although he is likely best known for his live-action roles in projects like the six-season sitcom Third Rock from the Sun and the iconic 1984 dance movie Footloose, he has voiced a wide range of roles including Jean-Claude in 2000's Rugrats in Paris,...

As the Thanksgiving holiday and the end of the year quickly approach, there's going to be much more down time from school and work. That means it's time catch up on Netflix new releases and have lots of movie marathons and binge-watches. Thankfully, there's lots coming to our watch lists soon.
Going into the weekend before the week of Thanksgiving, the Netflix top 10 most popular TV shows ranking includes recent releases such as Cobra Kai, which dropped the second part of its final season ahead of its series finale next year, and animated series Arcane.
As for the most popular movies on Netflix right, the sexy Netflix original holiday rom-coms The Merry Gentlemen and Hot Frosty are still bringing in viewers, but there's still plenty more movies to discover on the top 10 ranking and in the weekend's new release lineup.
Looking for exciting new titles to watch with with family for movie night?...

Weve come to expect a lot from animated films heart, humor, and character growth that blossom into a moving and memorable story. Not every film rises to the occasion, but some are less forgettable than others simply because they aimed to do something a bit different. Spellbound, the Skydance Animation-produced Netflix film, touches upon the themes of family and the changing dynamics that could potentially make or break it. That is its greatest strength, but for some reason, it takes too long to make its point and underwhelms in other areas in the process.
Spellbound, directed by Vicky Jenson, follows Princess Ellian on her adventurous quest to rescue her family and kingdom. As a mysterious spell transforms her parents into monsters, Ellian must navigate this perilous journey to restore the King and Queen of Lumbria.

The kid’s gonna be fine. It’s the parents who are not all right in “Spellbound,” a straight-to-Netflix computer-animated fairy tale with a smart concept (what’s a girl to do when her home life is shattered?) and its heart in the right place. If only the movie were transparent about its premise from the outset, as opposed to burying the explanation — as a real-world relevant twist — till nearly the end.
The film takes place in the fantasy kingdom of Lumbria, where the royal couple have been cursed. Once a reasonable ruler, King Solon (Javier Bardem) is now a speechless blue beast — albeit the cartoon-cute version of a rhinoceros-size creature, sporting an endearing underbite and an easily distractable, dog-like personality. His wife, Queen Ellsmere (Nicole Kidman), suffers from an equivalent affliction. Gone is the fair-featured matriarch, replaced by a puffy green dragon with flamingo-pink feathers, gold horns and ridiculously small wings.

Not all magic works as it should, and not all fairy tales have tidy endings. Families aren’t much different. While not the most consistently enchanting film, Skydance Animation’s Netflix offering Spellbound attempts to bring magic and family together in order to conjure a story about healing that fits our current moment.

When composer Alan Menken first joined the animated film “Spellbound,” the prospect of writing the score and songs felt “exciting and terrifying at the same time” because the story “defied a formulaic approach.” It is a sentiment that his collaborator and lyricist Glenn Slater echoes, because “while this has the form of a fairytale story, it’s actually a much bigger story than your typical fairytale.” The new Netflix movie centers on Princess Ellian, whose parents have been inexplicably transformed into gigantic monsters. The lyricist continues, “It’s an allegory for a family dynamic that many, many families go through.” Watch our complete video interview above.
Menken and Slater are frequent collaborators, having preciously worked on films “Tangled” and “Home on the Range,” TV series “Galavant,” and Broadway musicals “The Little Mermaid” and “Sister Act” together. The lyricist says that their process “always starts with conversation,” adding, “We sit at...

“Shrek” director Vicky Jenson celebrated the premiere of her new Netflix film “Spellbound,” the second animated feature from John Lasseter-led Skydance Animation, in New York City on Monday November 11. The story stars Rachel Zegler, Javier Bardem, and Nicole Kidman in a fairy tale that takes place in the mythical kingdom of Lumbria as Princess Ellian embarks on “an invigorating quest” to break the spell.
Bardem has had quite a busy last couple of months following the September premiere of Ryan Murphy’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.” Following the buzz from the show, the famous true crime case got a viral amount of attention nearly 30 years since the brothers were sentenced. On October 24, the Los Angeles district attorney recommended that Lyle and Erik Menendez be resentenced after being convicted of murdering their parents over three decades ago.
“Well, I think the reaction has been big,” Bardem told IndieWire.

At some point or another, most children view their parents as monsters — but for Princess Ellian (Rachel Zegler), a spell really did transform her royal parents (Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem) into monsters in the upcoming animated Netflix film “Spellbound” (streaming November 22). Watch the new trailer below.
The second animated feature from John Lasseter-led Skydance Animation (part of the impending Paramount-Skydance Media merger), the musical fantasy from director Vicky Jenson (“Shrek”) is a modern fairy tale that takes place in the mythical kingdom of Lumbria as Princess Ellian embarks on “an invigorating quest” to break the spell. Boasting bright, eye-catching animation from Skydance Animation Madrid, the look of Lumbria (production designed by Brett Nystul) was influenced by the iconic architecture of ancient Spain, known for its domed rooftops and Moorish arches.

"We have to break this spell!" Netflix & Skydance Animation have debuted the main official trailer for an animated adventure called Spellbound, made by filmmaker Vicky Jenson (who also co-directed Shrek and Shark Tale years ago). This big family movie musical featuring original songs will be streaming on Netflix in in November before Thanksgiving. Every kid has trouble getting along with their parents sometimes, but this is just ridiculous. Ha ha. In Spellbound, Ellian (voiced by Rachel Zegler) squares off with her mother and father, the king and queen of Lumbria. But this isn't any typical family drama — a mysterious spell has transformed her parents into massive, rampaging monsters. She goes on a quest to find out how to save her parents and maybe the entire kingdom. The main voice cast also includes John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, Nathan Lane, Tituss Burgess, with Javier Bardem & Nicole Kidman. With songs written by musical legend Alan Menken & Glenn Slater.

Shrek's John Lithgow revealed he would be willing to reprise his role as Lord Farquaad if asked to join the franchise's upcoming fifth film. Unfortunately, Lithgow also confirmed that he's not a part of the new movie.
Speaking with People, Lithgow said he would "say yes in a minute" to joining the cast of Shrek 5 as Lord Farquaad, the villainous main antagonist of the franchise's first film. At the end of 2001's Shrek, Lithgow's character was eaten by the fire-breathing dragon who guarded Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), and Lithgow joked to people about Farquaad's death preventing him from reprising his role. "It turns out it's impossible to recover from being eaten by a dragon," he said, adding that he hasn't been approached about joining Shrek 5.
