This Controversial 65-Year-Old Horror Masterpiece Was the First True Slasher (& It Predates Psycho)
Image
In many ways, slasher movies represent the horror genre at its purest. Favoring creative kills over cumbersome characterization works like Friday the 13th cater towards exploitation fans first and foremost. These films are exercises in brutality and pushed boundaries in terms of stomach-churning violence. In doing so, slashers like Freddy Krueger and Micheal Myers have become pop-culture icons, frequently overshadowing their thinly sketched victims. Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho is seen by many as the genre's earliest offering, effectively providing the blueprint for future horror filmmakers. That said, few realize that another psychological thriller beat Hitchcock to the punch earlier that year.

Directed by Micheal Powell, Peeping Tom debuted in the UK on April 7th, 1960. The film starred Karlheinz Bohm as Mark Lewis, a socially awkward camera operator obsessed with fear. He spends his nights hunting down women and murdering them on film, recording their reactions to analyze later. Like Psycho,...

‘Fake Profile’ Season 2 Cast And Character Guide
Image
Fake Profile seasons one and two are suggestive and unnecessarily titillating. This Colombian Netflix Original is about a woman who wants to get back at the man who wronged her. She ends up finding out a lot more about him than she expected, and all hell breaks loose as a result of her digging deep into his family life. Season one had a dramatic ending, and it paved the way for the next one. Season two features the same characters, and they carry the story forward to a whole after dimension. There are some new characters as well who bring in new stories.

Camila

Carolina Miranda comes back as Camila, who had a hot and heavy affair with Miguel until he betrayed her. By the end of season one, both survived the incident, yet they moved on. Camila, in season two, is with David, a rich Colombian himself who is madly in love with her.

10 Best British Spy TV Shows
Image
Britain's television landscape has often been linked with gritty characters, compelling storylines, and complex dramas, with no genre embodying those traits quite like an iconic British spy series. The British fiction's fascination with spies and espionage can be traced back to Ian Fleming's iconic James Bond character from 1953, which garnered worldwide attention and acclaim. Though other countries produce quality works in the genre, the British versions tend to have a biting dialogue mixed with intricate, layered narratives that create some of the most intense, thrilling shows of all time.

Uniquely British spy series from older generations, such as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, shows the complexity of the genre and the underlying tension and psychological pressures that agents must endure on their missions. Modern series like the beloved Killing Eve show a different layer to the genre, with a more quirky and comical tone that is still punctuated with moments...

Everything to Remember About 'Gladiator' Before Watching the Sequel
Image
Spoiler Alert: Spoilers follow for the original GladiatorWere (hopefully) about to be entertained once again. Ridley Scotts long-awaited Gladiator II finally hits theaters next weekend, and if early buzz is to be trusted, viewers should expect another hugely engaging round of brutal combat and immaculately constructed setpieces. For a long time, viewers had no idea how Scott could possibly continue the 2000 Best Picture winning original, given that it ends with the lead characters death. But recent trailers have given us a better idea of Scotts vision for a legacy sequel (even if it does admittedly raise questions about whether hes retconning the first one).

With the new installment less than a week away, film junkies are understandably in a mad rush to rewatch the first Gladiator before seeing the sequel. But obviously, not everyone has the time to do so, plus theres an entire generation of people who missed seeing the original in theaters.

Ridley Scott Recalls Joaquin Phoenix Nearly Quitting Gladiator, Reveals Russell Crowe's ReactionRidley Scott Recalls Joaquin Phoenix Nearly Quitting Gladiator, Reveals Russell Crowe's Reaction
Image
Joaquin Phoenix is widely considered one of the best actors of this generation and the Academy Awards recognized his talent when they awarded him the Best Actor award for 2019's Joker. However, the actor has been surrounded by controversies about wanting to leave projects ahead of filming.

This year, Phoenix left Todd Haynes' yet-untitled gay romance film five days before the film was supposed to start filming, and the film was ultimately scrapped. While the move shocked the people involved in the project, it turns out he's been trying to get out of projects for a long time. In a new interview with The New York Times, legendary director Ridley Scott revealed he also tried to get out of his role in 2000's Gladiator.

Sci-Fi Classic Repo Man Took Ideas From Two Movies You've Never Seen
Image
Alex Cox's 1984 punk rock sci-fi riot "Repo Man" is one of the defining films of its decade. It follows a disaffected punker named Otto who resents that he has to take a wage-slave job in the blasted-open, comedically meaningless landscape of Reagan's America. He finds solace and job satisfaction as a repo man, serving as the angry inversion of consumer culture. If we are defined by what we consume, then the repo man robs us of meaning, laying bare the fragility of modern economics. Also, be sure to keep your middle fingers highly raised at all times.

The magical McGuffin of "Repo Man" is an elusive 1964 Chevy Malibu, marked for repossession. The driver, however, is J. Frank Parnell (Fox Harris), and he seems to be unbalanced, having had a lobotomy at some point. Also, his trunk contains the corpse of a radioactive alien. Whenever someone tries looking in the trunk,...

1960 Proto Slasher ‘Peeping Tom’ Getting a Criterion Collection 4K Release in May
Image
A classic that predates the slasher movie by a decade and played a hugely influential role on the sub-genre, Michael Powell’s Peeping Tom (1960) returns to The Criterion Collection.

The film hits Criterion Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on May 14, 2024.

Criterion announces today, “Having brought British cinema into exalted realms of fantasy and imagination, Michael Powell took a dark detour into obsession, voyeurism, and violence with this groundbreaking metacinematic investigation into the mechanics of fear.

“Armed with his killer camera, photographer and filmmaker Mark Lewis (Carl Boehm) unleashes the traumas of his childhood by murdering women and recording their deaths—until he falls for his downstairs neighbor, and finds himself struggling against his dark compulsions. Received with revulsion upon its release only to be reclaimed as a masterpiece, the endlessly analyzed, still-shocking Peeping Tom dares viewers to confront their own relationship to the violence on-screen.”

by James Cameron-wilson

1960 was a year that sent shockwaves throughout the film industry. Alfred Hitchcock, who was to direct Anna Massey twelve years later in his lurid thriller Frenzy – about a serial killer in central London – opened a movie called Psycho. Psycho was significant in several regards. Hitchcock refused to show the film to critics and barred his two leads, Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh, from doing any promotional interviews as he wanted total control over the film’s publicity and its content. This was in June of 1960. Two months earlier another celebrated filmmaker had released an equally shocking film called Peeping Tom and whose critical reception ruined both the movie and the reputation of its director, Michael Powell. Hitchcock wanted audiences to judge Psycho for themselves. Most audiences never got a chance to evaluate Peeping Tom.

Both films were about serial killers and both showed the murderer as a self-effacing,...

10 Great Movies You Probably Thought Were Directed By Alfred Hitchcock
Image
While he may be known for his style of tension-building and mystery, Alfred Hitchcock isn't the only director adept at using these elements, hence why there's so many films that can easily pass as Hitchcokian classics. A maestro of classic horror and suspense, Alfred Hitchcock is one of the rare filmmakers to get a very word coined after him. Thematic or visual nods to the British auteur’s filmography are ever-present in many films after his lifetime, ranging from Body Double and Dressed To Kill to Basic Instinct and Disturbia. Several of his movies have also entertained non-English reinterpretations from around the world.

However, during the director's heyday, Hollywood and British cinema bore witness to movies that bore stark similarities to his multi-genre filmography. Be it in terms of narrative or stylistic elements, these productions might often get mistaken by cinephiles as Hitchcock-directed ventures even though he had nothing to do with them.

10 Best British Slasher Movies, Ranked
Image
The slasher sub-genre has produced some of the greatest horror movies and the most frightening villains for decades. Plots commonly involve a vengeful or simply psychotic killer adopting the stalk-and-murder approach, resulting in multiple victims rather than one or two homicides.

Today, the most known slasher films are Hollywood productions, but other countries also have gems. The British film industry has specifically contributed heavily to the subgenre. Some even credit it for producing the first projects that laid the foundation for many future Hollywood projects.
