It was a big night for television, as Emmy favorites descended upon Cipriani Wall Street in New York City for the second annual Gotham TV Awards. Launched in 2024, the TV branch of the beloved indie film award show continues to stake out an early position on the calendar that could eventually make it a barometer for the Emmy race in a way that mirrors the Gotham Awards’ traditional relationship with the Oscars.

This marks the second year in which the Gotham Awards have broken out TV honors with a separate ceremony during Emmys season.

Netflix’s Adolescence leads this year’s nominees with four nods.

The four-episode series about a teenage boy accused of murder, which became a much-talked-about phenomenon shortly after its streaming debut last month, landed nods for breakthrough limited series, lead performance in a limited series (Stephen Graham) and two nods for supporting performance in a limited series (Owen Cooper and Erin Doherty).

Meanwhile, Max’s The Pitt, FX’s Dying for Sex and CBS’ Matlock each landed three nods, with a number of projects scoring two nods apiece.

Dying for Sex faces off against Adolescence in the limited series category, where additional nominees are Get Millie Back, Penelope and Say Nothing.

Emmy season is upon us, and while we won’t see those nominations until July 15, the second annual Gotham Television Awards could give us a taste of what to expect from TV’s biggest night. The anticipated FX series based on the nonfiction bestselling book by Patrick Radden Keefe has dropped its trailer, previewing what’s in store when all nine episodes release Thursday, Nov. 14, on Hulu.

Described as a gripping story of murder and memory set in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, the limited series spans four decades to follow various Irish Republican Army (Ira) members, the group suspected of being behind the real-life abduction of a 38-year-old widow and mother who was taken from her Belfast home, rumored to be a British informant, and never seen again.

Women in Film has found its class of 2024.

From nearly 900 applications, the organization has confirmed 60 members for its Wif Fellowship Program for this year, bringing together cohorts of directors, writers, cinematographers, producers, line producers, executives, representatives, artisans and below-the-line crewmembers for a year of mentoring, guest speakers, master classes, networking and individualized support.

The program, launched last year to mark Wif’s 50th anniversary, is open to women, nonbinary and trans people. This year’s roster also includes the participants of the Wif x Black List Episodic Lab, a month-long program for new TV writers supported by the Golden Globes Foundation and ShivHans Pictures. Designed for mid-career professionals, the program offers each fellow at least six mentoring sessions with their cohort and a complimentary mentor team, made up of professionals across business and craft sectors of the industry. The fellows will also meet with Melissa Verdugo, senior manager of career programs.

Streaming services have changed the game for the film industry, with Netflix and Hulu being top contenders for putting out original movies. While those streaming platforms get more attention, Prime Video and their original films often feel underappreciated. Unlike most streaming services, Prime Video releases some of its movies in theaters before being recommended to at-home subscribers.

Whether they get exclusively released on the platform or have a short span in theaters, movies by Prime Video should not be underestimated. The service has a diverse variety of original projects for people to choose and watch. Prime Video's film library ranges from blockbusters that should have been shown in theaters - The Tomorrow War and Road House - to award-nominated motion pictures - Sound of Metal and The Big Sick. For over a decade, Prime Video has released many original movies for its subscribers, and these are the best the service has to offer.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and low budget film producers have teamed up to form a new subcommittee aimed at ensuring workers are free from harassment and discrimination. The group seeks to implement the Hollywood Commission’s Respect on Set program, which offers employers who are signatories of IATSE’s Low Budget Agreement services to create workplaces free from harassment and discrimination.

According to the Hollywood Commission’s recent surveys of entertainment workers, workers on low budget productions experience more sexual coercion and assault, along with great rates of gender and racial bias, compared to their major-studio counterparts. However, these abuses are reported at much lower rates on low budget productions. The survey found that workers have the impression that nothing will be done if they make a formal complaint.

“We applaud the steps taken by low budget producers who, understandably, want their sets to be free from sexual harassment and abusive conduct.

Last month, Anita Hill’s Hollywood Commission released the sobering findings from its most recent survey into workplace abuse: Most of the 5,000-plus respondents said that they were now better informed on how to identify misconduct, but they had little faith in employers’ and the industry’s ability to address the behavior.

At the time, Hill told The Hollywood Reporter that the report was only the first step in the journey of systemic change and that raising awareness of where people in the industry stand could lead to the reform or creation of policies and procedures to resolve what is lacking.

Now, two organizations have taken the first action as a result of the Commission’s survey: IATSE and the low budget film producers with whom the union negotiates for its Low Budget Agreement have formed a subcommittee focused on protecting workers on set. Specifically, the working group is tasked...

IATSE is forming a subcommittee with the low budget film producers to address sexual harassment on film and TV sets.

The primary mission of the subcommittee is to implement the Hollywood Commission’s Respect on Set program, which provides services to all signatories of IATSE’s Low Budget Agreement (Lba) (which covers films with budgets under $15M).

Those services are aimed at helping them create workplaces free from harassment and discrimination. They include a code of conduct, education resources, and a third-party reporting structure. The goal for the subcommittee to actually implement and expand these services ahead of IATSE’s 2025 Lba, so they can be included as provisions in the new agreement.

This marks a first-of-its-kind collaboration, as it is a commitment to creating enforceable standards for sexual harassment in a collective bargaining agreement.

So far, there’s to timetable for when the committee is expected to roll out these implementations.

The Hollywood Commission spent four years surveying the entertainment industry about discrimination, harassment, and bullying. They learned that while things were bad all over, low-budget film and TV sets had it worst. These crew members reported more sexual harassment, assault, discrimination, and gender and racial bias than their major-studio counterparts. Furthermore, these abuses were reported at much lower rates because workers believe nothing will be done.

Now, the Hc is making moves to address the discrepancy. It’s teaming with IATSE on a subcommittee that will determine protections and provisions for sexual harassment and discrimination for IATSE members and employers who work under the Low Budget Agreement. Any Lba signatories, which cover film and TV projects made for under $15 million, will be required to comply.

Formed in 2017 after the rise of #metoo and chaired by Anita Hill, the Hollywood Commission is an organization designed to root out abuses of power in Hollywood.

FX has given Say Nothing a limited series order and announced Lola Petticrew, Hazel Doupe, Anthony Boyle, Josh Finan, and Maxine Peake in starring roles. The nine-episode drama is based on Patrick Radden Keefe’s book, with the author involved as an executive producer.

A total of six honorees — including screenwriter and producer Linda Yvette Chávez and director, playwright and screenwriter Celine Song — were announced as the recipients of the annual awards on Thursday.

As a new dad myself, I can certainly attest to the trials and tribulations that comedian Bill Burr's conflicted father persona endures in his new Netflix film. Exclusive: Reign Edwards is set to star in Bill Burr’s Miramax comedy Old Dads. Edwards joins previously announced cast of Burr, Bobby Cannavale, Bokeem Woodbine and Katie Aselton. She plays the role of Britney, the young girlfriend of Woodbine.

Burr co-wrote the movie and is currently directing the movie in Los Angeles.

Burr’s All Things Comedy is producing alongside Ben Tishler, who co-wrote the script with Burr, as well as Monica Levinson and Mike Bertolina.

Edwards stars in the Amazon series The Wilds, which has its second season premiering May 6. She is also known for her recurring role over four seasons on FX’s Snowfall. Other credits include CBS Films’ Hellfest, Blumhouse’s Into the Dark and CBS’ MacGyver. She earned three Daytime Emmy nominations for her role on The Bold and the Beautiful.

Edwards will next be seen starring in Wayfarer’s experimental film Love You Anyway opposite Charlie Gillespie.

Deadline reported that Rudy Giuliani was unveiled as a contestant on “The Masked Singer.” The season seven reveal during the Fox primetime singing competition, which hasn’t yet aired, allegedly led to judges Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke leaving the stage in protest.

Fellow judges Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Scherzinger remained on set and “bantered” with Giuliani, per Deadline.

Variety reported that Fox “refuses to acknowledge leaks, maintaining the series’ policy against confirming ‘spoilers.'”

Giuliani’s episode will not air until March, with the theme of “The Good, The Bad, and the Cuddly.” However, the politician’s rumored appearance is already causing social media backlash.

Wif announced today the honorees for the 2021 Wif Honors that will be held on Wednesday, October 6 at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.

Formerly named the Crystal + Lucy Awards®, the annual benefit supports Wif’s educational and philanthropic programs and its advocacy for gender parity for women throughout the industry. This is the first time the organization has been able to hold its fundraising celebration since 2019, due to the pandemic.

This year’s Wif Honors will celebrate the women who are transforming the industry for the better, with innovative reimaginings of how the workplace can be set up for women to support women with compassion, care, and a renewed commitment to equity across intersectional identities. The iconic Crystal Award will be presented to the following pairs of collaborators:

Women In Film, Los Angeles has set Marlee Matlin, Siâ­­­­n Heder, Jean Smart, Hannah Einbinder, Zendaya and Ashley Levinson as the recipients of its 2021 Crystal Award, recognizing outstanding artists whose advocacy has helped to expand the role of women within entertainment.

Matlin and Heder will be honored for “setting a new precedent for representation and accessibility in front of and behind the camera” on their Apple coming-of-age dramedy, Coda. Smart and Einbinder, the Emmy-nominated stars of HBO Max’s hit comedy series Hacks, will be recognized for performances that bring to light issues Wif has been working to address for decades—specifically, sexism, ageism, and harassment in the entertainment industry. Then, there’s Zendaya and her producing partner Levinson, who will be acknowledged for their disruption of “the imbalanced, traditional systems of compensation and ownership,” having developed a shared equity model for their acclaimed Netflix feature, Malcolm & Marie.

The Producers Guild of America Awards awarded Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” with their top prize, one of the key indicators for the Academy Awards, particularly the best picture category. The winner of the PGA Awards’ top prize has historically been a strong indicator of which film will will go on to win the Best Picture Oscar. Probably the wildest movie scene of 2020 and surely the most talked-about, the climax of “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” finds Rudy Giuliani in a compromising position in front of Maria Bakalova, who plays Kazakh journalist Borat’s daughter Tutar. According to one of the film’s producers, Monica Levinson, during a Producers Guild of America virtual panel held on Saturday, shooting that very scene almost tangled the crew in some legal trouble.
