Exclusive: Here’s a first look at Housefull 5, starring the likes of Indian comedy king Akshay Kumar and Abhishek A Bachchan.

The trailer for the first film in the Housefull franchise in six years shows Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh and Abhishek A Bachchan on a giant cruise ship all claiming to be the real son and rightful heir to a fortune. Following a wild night where drinks are spiked, they wake to find their memories hazy, and are soon put in ship’s jail after a murder, with a pair of detectives flown in to determine which of three committed the crime.

As one of the biggest budget comedies to come out of India, the action shifts from the boat across to London, then France, Spain and back to the UK as the police search for their killer. Interestingly, the movie will have two different endings, which will play in cinemas at different times.

It has been 22 years since the romantic drama Andaaz starring Lara Dutta, Priyanka Chopra, and Akshay Kumar released. Subhash K Jha revists the iconic film and in a special throwback interview Akshay comments on the success of the film and the powerful combination of Lara and Priyanka.

Andaaz must be the most iconoclastic film about familial ties ever put together for the pleasure of the Hindi-speaking masses. Housefull 2 contains gags galore. Laughs? Well, not as many as you’d expect in a 180-minute marathon mirth machine. Somehow, the jokes get choked in the comic ritual of repetition. Once you figure out who’s who and who’s ha-ha in the farce fest, the attempts to cram as many characters into every frame as humanly possible begins to take its toll on the comic equilibrium of this tale of intermittent titters and some genuine laughs.

But Be Happy remains rigidly rooted to an elementary school of thought. The writing, though benign, is facile and innocuously manipulative.

Putting a beautiful expressive talented motherless little dancer at the centre of the plot, and then thrusting a fatal illness on her, is exploitative enough. Hitting for the tear duct over and over again becomes a bit of an exercise in futility when it is done inorganically.
