    Leontovich was the daughter of a Russian Tsarist army officer. Her father and three brothers fought with the White Russian forces and were captured, tortured and killed by the Bolsheviks. She, however, survived the Russian Revolution and escaped to Paris, reaching the U.S. in 1922.
