Following Dead & Company’s epic weekend at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, Mickey Hart shared a poignant reflection of the 60th anniversary shows.
“This weekend was 3 days of coming home and in those final moments of the weekend, it was truly profound,” he wrote on Instagram. “I saw 60,000 people sparking light, in love, entrained big time and coming our way. Different than applause after a song, it sounded more like an ahhhhhh. All the peace and love in proximity generated a collective energy that was shared by all. Very rare stuff indeed.

Dead & Company celebrated 60 years of the Grateful Dead with concerts in San Francisco over the weekend — and John Mayer couldn’t be more honored to be part of the festivities. In a sweet Instagram post, the guitarist thanked fans for accepting him as he honored the band’s legacy.

There was a moment at the end of Dead & Company’s Sunday night performance at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park when you could truly feel gratitude float through the chilly night air. Not from the 60,000 in attendance, but the two men standing with hand to heart on the stage.
Bob Weir and Mickey Hart have taken it upon themselves to continue the legacy started six decades earlier in the very same spot. The Grateful Dead, which they co-founded along with the late Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh, had gone on to tour stadiums and have hit records, but they very much remained a local band — as synonymous with the city as the fog.

Dead and Co. wrapped up their three-day celebration of the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary Sunday evening at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park with an epic set that included “Shakedown Street,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Cumberland Blues,” and “Standing on the Moon.”
The Trey Anastasio Band served as the warm-up act, and the Phish frontman came out during the start of Dead and Co’s set to join them on “Scarlet Begonias” and “Fire on the Mountain.” It was a moment of jam band bliss with the two songs stretching out for roughly 15 minutes each.

Deadheads are nothing if not dedicated. The legendary jam band, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, and Kennedy Center honorees have enjoyed decades of fandom that few bands rival. And just like their decades of musical output, the Grateful Dead are unbeaten when it comes to merch. From the Stealie skull logo to Bertha to the dancing bears, the Grateful Dead have enough iconic images for three separate bands.

The Grateful Dead are celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, from the massive 60-cd box set Enjoying the Ride to a book of rare Jim Marshall photographs. Now, the long, strange trip continues with two separate screenings on IMAX.
Dead & Company — the offshoot that celebrated its 10th anniversary this year with another residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas — will livestream the last of their three shows in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. That live IMAX event takes place on Aug. 3, and features an opening set by the Trey Anastasio Band.

When journalist Brian Anderson acquired a crumbling speaker monitor from the Grateful Dead’s legendary 1974 Wall of Sound via a Sotheby’s auction, it wasn’t just memorabilia he was after. The former science editor at The Atlantic was seeking a portal, both physical and metaphorical, into Grateful Dead history. A way back to a moment when, as bassist Phil Lesh wrote in his 2005 memoir Searching for the Sound, “from the beginning every one of our moves was powered by deep waves in the group unconscious, these mighty currents were moving us in a singular direction toward a musical polar opposite.”
If that sounds a bit out there, that’s because it was. The Grateful Dead charted the musical and psychedelic terrain of the 1960s counterculture. By the early ’70s, they were searching for new ways to innovate and to forge a deeper communion with their audience.

When Jerry Garcia was alive and the Grateful Dead were constantly touring, the band’s famed singer and guitarist had a vision: A venue of his own he could enjoy when he wasn’t on the road. Now, nearly 30 years after his death, that dream has finally come to fruition.
Garcia’s, a 300-cap concert venue and restaurant in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, officially opens Friday, six years after the concept was first unveiled back in 2019. The venue is a partnership between Garcia’s estate and longtime concert promoter Peter Shapiro, the owner of Brooklyn Bowl and the Capitol Theatre who promoted the Dead’s famed Fare Thee Well shows back in 2015.
“Chicago has a lot of great venues — the Metro, the Vic, the Riviera, but it doesn’t have this,” Shapiro tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We think it’ll be a new kind of venue in one of...

Here are a few takeaways.
He’s open to the Dead continuing with only its core members.

Bobby Weir has been on the road virtually without a break since 1965, but the past few weeks have been crazy even by his standards. In December, he and his band the Grateful Dead were honored at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Now, in late January in Los Angeles, the jam-band legends are being celebrated as MusiCares’ Persons of the Year. In a couple of days, Weir will attend the 67th Grammy Awards, posing for a photo with Taylor Swift that will make Deadheads trip out even more than usual.

When the Grateful Dead celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015, the band hardly downplayed the moment: The surviving members congregated for a series of Fare Thee Well shows and released a 50-disc box set of previously unreleased live cuts. Phil Lesh’s passing last fall put an end to any possible plans for a 60th-anniversary reunion show this year. But the Dead and its related company, Rhino, are still going big with another, even heftier package to mark six decades since the band (then called the Warlocks) played at Magoo’s Pizza in Menlo Park,...

More than 15 Grammy Week events sponsored by the Recording Academy and many other Grammy-related parties were canceled this year due to January’s devastating Los Angeles fires, with the actual Grammy ceremony, which will still take place on Sunday, Feb. 2, pivoting to focus on raising funds for wildfire relief. Grateful Dead members Bobby Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, and Phil Lesh had been considering a reunion to celebrate the band’s 60th anniversary in 2025, and even had plans on the books to rehearse. Unfortunately, those plans are now in flux following Lesh’s passing on October 25th.
Weir, Kreutzmann, and Hart spoke with Anthony Mason of CBS This Morning in an interview that took place just five days after Lesh’s death.
“I was hoping that we could play with him again one more time,” Kreutzmann said. “So that, that was my sadness…’Cause I know he wanted to play with us again too.”
“We were kickin’ it around,” Weir added. “In fact, we were gonna, we were gonna get together and, and kick some songs around tomorrow.”

Phil Lesh is one of Mike Gordon’s biggest heroes. Gordon, the bassist for Phish, became aware of the Grateful Dead in high school and soon zoned in on Lesh. The two briefly met at a show in 1993, but it wasn’t until 1999 that they began a friendship that continued until Lesh’s death in October. Here, in a tribute in his own words that’s set to appear in our December print issue, Gordon talks about what he learned from Lesh, their frequent onstage collaborations, and that heartbreaking version...

On social media, the guitarist credited Lesh with introducing him to much of the music that would inform his own playing style, as well as influence the Dead’s improvisational music.

The moment could arrive anywhere, anytime, but you always knew it was coming. It was the moment, at a Grateful Dead show or on a live recording, when Phil Lesh and his bass would make themselves known.
