The world premiere production of The Balusters by Kimberly Akimbo writer David Lindsay-Abaire has been added to Manhattan Theatre Club’s 2025-2026 season, joining the previously announced Broadway premiere of James Graham’s acclaimed Punch.

The Balusters, to be directed by Kenny Leon, will open at Mtc’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in spring 2026 (Punch opens there in the fall). Lindsay-Abaire won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Rabbit Hole, a Manhattan Theatre Club production.

Mtc today also announced an Off Broadway addition to its 2025-2026 season: A newly imagined version of Queens by Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok (Cost of Living), to be directed by Trip Cullman with an opening in fall 2025 Off-Broadway at NY City Center Stage I. Queens joins Mtc’s spring 2026 Off Broadway production The Monsters, written and directed by Ngozi Anyanwu in a co-production with Two River Theater.

Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire is bringing a new play to Broadway next season.

The play, The Balusters, will make its world premiere at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in spring 2026. Kenny Leon, who directed Our Town and Othello on Broadway this season, will helm the production.

The Balusters follows the neighborhood association in a small community which is upended by a newcomer who suggests installing a stop sign on the community’s most beautiful block.

Othello might have been shut out from today’s Tony Award nominations, but this news probably takes away a bit of the sting: The Broadway revival starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal and directed by Kenny Leon has officially recouped its investment.

Producers announced the financial milestone shortly after the Tony nominations were announced, though did not disclose the investment amount.

The production has been playing to sold-out audiences since its first preview at the Barrymore Theatre on Monday, February 24. Denzel Washington is clarifying what kind of actor he identifies as. The Oscar winner, who is currently starring alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in Broadway’s “Othello,” said during the “Sunday Morning” show that he does not think of himself as a film star; instead, he is a “stage actor who does film.”

And it’s not that Washington has swapped Hollywood for Broadway, either: The actor pointed to the elusive intangibility of the term itself. “What’s the definition of a Hollywood actor? Myself, I’m from Mt. Vernon. I’m a Mt. Vernon actor,” Washington said. “I don’t know what ‘Hollywood’ means. I know it’s a place.”

When “Sunday Morning” host Bill Whitaker used “film actor” to instead define what it means to be a Hollywood star, Washington then corrected him. “I’m a stage actor who does film. It’s not the other way around,” Washington said.

The modern-dress production – a practice that’s become so common among stagings of Shakespeare over recent decades that the disclaimer is anything but necessary.

There’s no denying Denzel Washington’s magnetism. He carries himself with a swaggering authority enhanced by the natural gravitas of his voice. The two-time Oscar winner is the principal reason audiences are shelling out upwards of $900 to see Kenny Leon’s frustratingly underpowered revival of Othello on Broadway. Playing the Venetian general often disparagingly referred to as “the Moor,” Washington emanates the steely charisma of a man who has risen above casual racism by virtue of his military prowess. But there’s little evidence of a driving force behind his performance, which is symptomatic of the production overall.

Staged on a stately set of distressed classical grandeur designed by Derek McLane, this stylish but shallow modern-dress Othello is set in “The Near Future,” as an opening projection informs us. But that’s as close to an overarching concept as Leon gets.

The new musical Operation Mincemeat is now open on Broadway after taking London’s West End by storm!

Original cast members Zoe Roberts, Claire-Marie Hall, Jak Malone, Natasha Hodgson, and David Cumming walked the red carpet together at the opening night performance on Thursday (March 21) at the Golden Theatre in New York City.

The five actors, several of whom also helped co-write the musical, all starred in the West End production back in 2023 and they’ve brought the show to New York for a limited run. Othello broke the record for highest weekly gross for a Broadway play last week, and was the top-grossing show in the industry for the second week in the row. 

The play, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, brought in $2.8 million in its second week of previews and played to 100 percent capacity at the Barrymore Theatre. Ticket prices are high, with an average price of $338.09, which is hundreds above the next highest ticket prices of $158 at Wicked and Hamilton. 

Still, the prices are below the highs reached during the prior week, when the show commanded an average ticket price of $361.90. The play, directed by Kenny Leon, is scheduled to open March 23. 

Othello again beat out Wicked, which had been the highest grossing show over the past several months. Wicked took the second spot last week, with $2.4 million, followed by Hamilton with $1.7 million, The Lion King with $1.5 million and The Outsiders with $1.3 million.

The average ticket price last week was $338.09, which was also the highest on Broadway for the week and hundreds of dollars above the next highest price. The prior week, Othello also topped the prices of all other shows with an average ticket price of $361.90. That week, the play grossed $2.6 million across its first seven performances.

The play broke multiple box office records at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, surpassing those set by plays across nine performances and by musicals by more than $1 million. It was helped by an eye-popping average ticket price of $361.90. The next highest average ticket price on Broadway last week was for The Outsiders at $155.

The totals made Othello the highest grossing show on Broadway last week, beating out Wicked, which has held the top spot for months, propelled by momentum from the film.

The take tops four previous Barrymore records. The Band’s Visit‘s held the biggest nine-performance gross; Waitress was tops for a musical, eight performances; Betrayal held the nine-performance record for a play; and A Raisin In The Sun had the eight-performance record for a play.

The revival of Our Town, starring Jim Parsons, Zoey Deutch and Katie Holmes, ended its limited run Sunday at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre with its highest gross yet.

The Thornton Wilder revival, directed by Kenny Leon, brought in $1.08 million last and played to 95 percent capacity, with an average ticket price of $134.51. The play opened on Broadway on Oct. 10.

Wicked remained the top grossing show in the industry for the week, bringing in $2.6 million, followed by Hamilton with $1.9 million and Gypsy with $1.89 million. The Great Gatsby brought in $1.85 million as lead Jeremy Jordan celebrated his last week in the show before joining the musical Floyd Collins this spring. The Lion King rounded up the top five with $1.7 million.

The Broadway revival of Gypsy, starring legendary performer Audra McDonald, is officially open!

Broadway besties Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff were among the celebs who led the star-studded red carpet at opening night on Thursday (December 19) at the Majestic Theatre in New York City.

Lea and Jonathan met while working together on the 2006 Broadway show Spring Awakening and have been best friends ever since. For those who don’t know, Lea worked with Audra when she was a child, playing the little girl in the original production of Ragtime back in 1998.

Audra is currently starring alongside Danny Burstein and Joy Woods in the new production of Gypsy, which is playing at the newly reopened Majestic Theatre. The theatre has been dark since The Phantom of the Opera closed back in April 2023.

Speaking at the 2024 MoMA Benefit honoring Jackson (per IndieWire), Walton Goggins' tribute was a funny anecdote about his son and Jackson meeting on the set of The Hateful Eight. Goggins' five-year-old was cosplaying as Jango Fett that day, and Jackson took the opportunity to reference an iconic Star Wars scene when they met. Jackson played the revered Mace Windu in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, and a highlight of that film was the Jedi Master's duel with the bounty hunter Jango Fett. Exclusive: The Broadway revival of Othello starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal has added to the cast with Andrew Burnap, Anthony Michael Lopez, Daniel Pearce (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) and Kimber Elayne Sprawl (Girl from the North Country).

The four will play, respectively, Cassio, Roderigo, Brabantio and Emilia. They’ll join the previously announced Washington, who plays Othello, Gyllenhaal (Iago) and Molly Osborne (Desdemona).

The new castings were announced today by producer Brian Anthony Moreland. Complete casting will be announced soon.

The star of the upcoming “White Lotus” season was among those honoring Jackson during the 2024 MoMA Film Benefit, presented by Chanel. The Broadway revival of Thornton Wilder‘s “Our Town” opened Oct. 10 to rave reviews. This imaginative restaging of this American classic by Tony-winning director Kenny Leon (“A Raisin in the Sun”) is sure to be a strong contender at the Tony Awards next June. The 1988 remounting of this Pulitzer Prize winner won Best Revival while the 2002 version earned Paul Newman his only Tony nomination,

Newman was the Stage Manager, the narrator of this tale of small-town folk at the turn of the 20th century, played in this production by four-time Emmy champ Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”). Parsons was a Tony contender last season for his featured turn in Paula Vogel‘s “Mother Play.” He was singled out by many critics for his role as ringmaster. And many of the reviews made special mention of the set design by two-time Tony winner Beowulf Boritt and lighting by four-time Tony nominee Allen Lee Hughes.
