Six new Broadway productions opened in March, inaugurating the spring season and foreshadowing the 12 additional openings to come before Tony Awards nominations are announced. Purpose: Prior to opening, our users were only predicting a single nomination for this new American family drama for its Tony-winning featured actress Kara Young. Since the glowing critical response to playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' latest effort, it has surged with three additional expected bids for Best Play, featured actress Latanya Richardson Jackson, and director Phylicia Rashad. It certainly hasn’t hit its ceiling yet, either, as its lead actor Jon Michael Hill and featured actor Harry Lennix are both within striking distance in sixth place in their respective categories.

Denzel Washington is clarifying what kind of actor he identifies as. The Oscar winner, who is currently starring alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in Broadway’s “Othello,” said during the “Sunday Morning” show that he does not think of himself as a film star; instead, he is a “stage actor who does film.”
And it’s not that Washington has swapped Hollywood for Broadway, either: The actor pointed to the elusive intangibility of the term itself. “What’s the definition of a Hollywood actor? Myself, I’m from Mt. Vernon. I’m a Mt. Vernon actor,” Washington said. “I don’t know what ‘Hollywood’ means. I know it’s a place.”
When “Sunday Morning” host Bill Whitaker used “film actor” to instead define what it means to be a Hollywood star, Washington then corrected him. “I’m a stage actor who does film. It’s not the other way around,” Washington said.

More than just being a stage, Broadway exists as a remarkable space that allows stories to play out in the present time, as each word and movement can determine how a show will go. The live theater setting offers no room for corrections, providing actors with just one opportunity to deliver a successful show.
Since Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal carry such a huge reputation, their entry onto that stage naturally creates significant attention among audiences. Both have real history with the stage. Washington got his Tony Award for Fences in 2010, while Gyllenhaal returns to Broadway quite often.

After breaking records on Broadway, Denzel Washington is set to play Othello in a brand new feature film adaptation.
Denzel Washington has already brought us one memorable turn as a doomed Shakespearean hero in recent years, with his take on the ambitious and violent usurper Macbeth in Apple’s The Tragedy Of Macbeth collaborating with director Joel Coen.
However, following a highly successful opening on Broadway which has broken the record for the highest opening week gross ever, it looks as though his stage version of Othello may be making the same transition.
This isn’t entirely new news, given that Washington publicly introduced the idea of playing Othello back in November on The Today Show while out and about promoting Gladiator II.

Denzel Washington's latest venture in the world of Shakespeare could become a feature film adaptation if the Oscar-winning actor's hopes are realized. The Washington-led Broadway production, Othello, may get the big-screen treatment, with its director revealing talks about a potential movie are underway.
Speaking during Othello's red carpet premiere with The Hollywood Reporter, director Kenny Leon shared that he and Washington are "absolutely" discussing the potential of a film adaptation. Though Leon admits he isn't sure how the play would translate to the big screen, he believes the adaptation must convey the same truth the Broadway version does to stay connected to the real story.
"[It's] two different art forms... [But the story's still] got to tell the same truth... We’re trying to get this up first... It's important for today because, for hundreds of years, we're still dealing with ourselves. Humanity is still struggling with itself. This play is about...

The newest Broadway adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Othello just became the highest-grossing Broadway play ever. The play’s new incarnation seems tailor-made for the big screen and even has film stars Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal going toe-to-toe as frenemies Othello and Iago. Washington recently talked about where he’s taking his career when promoting Gladiator II last year, which included a surprise announcement about Black Panther 3. Washington said, “I played Othello at 22, I’m now going to play it at 70. After that, I’m playing Hannibal. After that, I’ve been talking with Steve McQueen about a film. After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther.“

Denzel Washington may be bringing his version of “Othello” to the screen.
Washington stars alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the Broadway play, which has been in previews since February 24. “Othello” opened March 23 and runs through June 8. The play already broke the record for the highest weekly gross ever by earning $2.8 million in its second week. Now, director Kenny Leon is teasing that the historic Shakespeare retelling could lead to a film.
Leon told The Hollywood Reporter that there has “absolutely” been talks with Washington about adapting the play into a feature. Leon previously has collaborated with Washington on two other plays, “A Raisin in the Sun” and “Fences,” which Washington then later directed the film version of. When asked if Gyllenhaal would also potentially reprise his role for an “Othello” film, Leon said, “I would hope so, absolutely, that’s what I would hope would happen.”

Othello may have just hit Broadway, but the future of seeing it on the silver screen — with Denzel Washington — looks promising, too.
The highly anticipated show starring Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal celebrated its official opening on Sunday. Last year, Washington told Australia’s Today about a number of projects he had coming up. Broadway’s Othello was one of them, but so was the film version.
The play’s director, Kenny Leon, told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet at the Othello opening that there have “absolutely” already been talks about adapting the play into a film. Leon, who’s now worked with Washington on three projects (A Raisin in the Sun, Fences), added that he hopes Gyllenhaal could also return. “I would hope so, absolutely, that’s what I would hope would happen,” he said.

Othello
Opening night: March 23, 2025
Venue: Broadway’s Barrymore Theatre
Written by: William Shakespeare
Directed by: Kenny Leon
Cast: Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal, Molly Osborne, Andrew Burnap, Anthony Michael Lopez, Daniel Pearce, Kimber Elayne Sprawl, Neal Bledsoe, Julee Cerda, Ezra Knight, Gene Gillette, Rob Heaps, and William Connell, Ty Fanning, Ben Graney, Daniel Reece, Christina Sajous, Greg Wood, with swing Abiola Obatolu.
Running time: 2 hr 35 min (with intermission)
Deadline’s takeaway: Othello, director Kenny Leon’s new Broadway staging of one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies starring two of our greatest actors – Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal – in two of the Bard’s best roles doesn’t take too long to recover from an odd misstep: the projection of words onto a back wall suggesting the time is The Near Future. The modern-dress production – a practice that’s become so common among stagings of Shakespeare over recent decades that the disclaimer is anything but necessary.

There’s no denying Denzel Washington’s magnetism. He carries himself with a swaggering authority enhanced by the natural gravitas of his voice. The two-time Oscar winner is the principal reason audiences are shelling out upwards of $900 to see Kenny Leon’s frustratingly underpowered revival of Othello on Broadway. Playing the Venetian general often disparagingly referred to as “the Moor,” Washington emanates the steely charisma of a man who has risen above casual racism by virtue of his military prowess. But there’s little evidence of a driving force behind his performance, which is symptomatic of the production overall.
Staged on a stately set of distressed classical grandeur designed by Derek McLane, this stylish but shallow modern-dress Othello is set in “The Near Future,” as an opening projection informs us. But that’s as close to an overarching concept as Leon gets.

Django Unchained was Walton Goggins' first film with Samuel L. Jackson, but they got to know each other better in The Hateful Eight. The Fallout star recalled the day his son first met Jackson on that film's production set.
Speaking at the 2024 MoMA Benefit honoring Jackson (per IndieWire), Walton Goggins' tribute was a funny anecdote about his son and Jackson meeting on the set of The Hateful Eight. Goggins' five-year-old was cosplaying as Jango Fett that day, and Jackson took the opportunity to reference an iconic Star Wars scene when they met. Jackson played the revered Mace Windu in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, and a highlight of that film was the Jedi Master's duel with the bounty hunter Jango Fett. That brief scene ended with Mace Windu chopping off the Mandalorian's head.

Samuel L. Jackson was honored Thursday at the Museum of Modern’s 2024 Film Benefit in New York City.
“I’ve always believed that cinema has been and continues to be a powerful medium, transcends language, shifts societal paradigms and pushes us as audience and artist to see the world from the perspectives of others as we celebrate film tonight,” the actor said. “Let’s remember the power it has to change lives and inspire future generations that benefit from MoMA’s acquisition and preservation of films like the ones that ignited the dreams of a little Black kid sitting in a segregated Tennessee movie theater to be standing before you now. Let’s continue to tell the stories that matter, stories that move us and stories that unite us.”
Presented in collaboration with Chanel, the gala featured tributes from Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, Walton Goggins, Kenny Leon, Latanya Richardson Jackson...

Samuel L. Jackson may be a real-life superhero, according to his three-time co-star Walton Goggins.
The star of the upcoming “White Lotus” season was among those honoring Jackson during the 2024 MoMA Film Benefit, presented by Chanel. Goggins recalled onstage just how much Jackson helped him during the rehearsals for Quentin Tarantino’s 2015 Western film “The Hateful Eight,” especially when it came to easing his nerves.
“When we were doing rehearsals for ‘The Hateful Eight,’ this was before it was going to be a movie and we were just going to do this stage read, I was running a day late,” Goggins said while at the Museum of Modern Art Film Benefit presented by Chanel, A Tribute to Samuel L. Samuel L. Jackson was honored at the Museum of Modern Art’s 2024 Film Benefit, presented by Chanel, on Wednesday, as a star-studded group of friends and collaborators paid tribute to the actor.
Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, Walton Goggins, Kenny Leon, wife Latanya Richardson Jackson and MoMA’s chief curator of film Rajendra Roy were all in attendance at the event, with Brie Larson and George Lucas sending video messages of support.
Lucas noted how Jackson is “not always like the parts he plays; he’s much more of a sweet, honest, good, helpful, loving guy.” Lee looked back at their early days together in Atlanta, recalling even in college thinking of Jackson and his friends, “I know that God willing, if I became a filmmaker, these great artists would be in my films.”

The Broadway revival of Thornton Wilder‘s “Our Town” opened Oct. 10 to rave reviews. This imaginative restaging of this American classic by Tony-winning director Kenny Leon (“A Raisin in the Sun”) is sure to be a strong contender at the Tony Awards next June. The 1988 remounting of this Pulitzer Prize winner won Best Revival while the 2002 version earned Paul Newman his only Tony nomination,
Newman was the Stage Manager, the narrator of this tale of small-town folk at the turn of the 20th century, played in this production by four-time Emmy champ Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”). Parsons was a Tony contender last season for his featured turn in Paula Vogel‘s “Mother Play.” He was singled out by many critics for his role as ringmaster. And many of the reviews made special mention of the set design by two-time Tony winner Beowulf Boritt and lighting by four-time Tony nominee Allen Lee Hughes.
