Enter the Clones of Bruce Review: An Insightful Look at a Bizarre Genre
Image
The sudden death of martial arts superstar Bruce Lee in 1973 shocked the world. Fans everywhere mourned the loss of an icon who had left us far too soon. Lee had accomplished so much in his short but brilliant career, popularizing martial arts cinema globally with smash hits like Enter the Dragon. Yet when that fateful day arrived, Lee had just begun to make his mark. Four iconic films were not enough; the world wanted more.

In Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Korea, filmmakers saw an opportunity. If they couldn’t deliver more from the master himself, they would find men to carry on his legacy in spirit, if not in fact. Lookalikes with pseudonyms like Bruce Li and Dragon Lee stepped into the role. Movies copied or faked Lee’s titles and style, often featuring these “clones” in leading roles. An entire genre sprung up to feed the worldwide thirst for all things Lee,...

Bruce Lee Imitator Says Copying Iconic Martial Artist Was Tougher Than It Looked: ‘Acting Is Not Like Kung Fu’
Image
When Bruce Lee died under mysterious circumstances in 1973 at age 32, the actor and martial artist left a hole in the action star firmament that seemed irreplaceable. That did not stop the Hong Kong film industry — and the rest of the world, for that matter — from trying anyway.

As Lee’s final (complete) film “Enter the Dragon,” released just six days after his death, became a worldwide box office phenomenon, “Bruceploitation” was born, enlisting look-alike performers to replace and imitate the trailblazing martial artist on screen. Decades after these copycat films deceived viewers — while still delivering some genuinely thrilling fight sequences — Severin Films is releasing “The Game of Clones: Bruceploitation Collection Vol. 1,” a compilation of 14 titles starring Bruce “impostors” like Ho Chung Tao, who went by the name Bruce Li, Ryong Keo (Dragon Lee), Chang Yi-tao (Bruce Lai) and Wong Kin-lung, who to this day goes by the name Bruce Le.

Enter the Clones of Bruce Review – FrightFest 2023
Image
Whether you’ve heard the term or not, chances are you’ve seen an exploitation film somewhere in the wild. From sharksploitation megahits like Sharknado, to culture-defining classics like ozploitation’s original Mad Max, or carsploitation’s Death Race 2000, the quality of these carefully marketed mockbusters – built entirely around audience trends with huge, eye-catchingly stupid titles – has always been up for debate. But it’s rare there’s a moral dimension too; after all, no one owns the copyright on cars or sharks or post-apocalyptic bikers. It’s a little different when the genre being exploited though, is an actual person.

Bruce Lee is arguably the most famous and accomplished martial arts performer that’s ever lived. Despite a tragically truncated filmography, cut short at just four features, by his sudden death in 1973, he had co-birthed the entire kung-fu genre, which continues to live and thrive half a century on.

‘Enter the Clones of Bruce’ Review: When Everybody Really Was Kung Fu Fighting
Image
A singularly wacky moment in film history is poked in “Enter the Clones of Bruce.” It surveys the years immediately following Bruce Lee’s untimely 1973 death, when the sudden international thirst for martial arts movies that he’d awoken could seemingly only be slaked by the man himself — or by a host of imitators who popped up under lookalike pseudonyms.

David Gregory’s documentary won’t convince most viewers that the resulting flood of opportunistic cheapies are worth more extensive investigation. But they’re certainly cheesy fun in excerpt, and interviews with surviving participants provide an entertaining window into an anything-goes heyday for Hong Kong cinema. Premiering in Tribeca’s midnight section, this high-kicking flashback should appeal to the same fans who previously enjoyed such prior psychotronic excavations as “Not Quite Hollywood,” “Electric Boogaloo” or this director’s own prior investigations of cult figures Al Adamson and Richard Stanley.

What's Next For Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks After Trios Titles Win?
Image
The road back to winning the Aew World Trios Championships was rocky for Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks. They won the inaugural tournament for the belts last September at All Out but were stripped of the titles after an alleged backstage confrontation and fight with Cm Punk. That's all been covered ad nauseam, but winning those belts again on Dynamite on January 11 wasn't a straightforward in-ring affair for Omega and The Young Bucks. It was Match 7 in an unheard-of best-of-seven series against Death Triangle, with each bout being more hard-hitting than the last. The Elite came out on top, erasing a 3-1 deficit en route to earning the trios titles again.

It capped off an emotional four-month period for The Elite. The plan wasn't for them to be stripped of their titles following All Out, but backstage issues necessitated that move from Tony Khan. Kenny Omega and The Young...

‘Aew: Dynamite’ Review (Aug 17th 2022)
Image
Welcome to this week’s review of Aew: Dynamite, which was broadcast live from the Charleston Coliseum in Charleston, West Virginia and is a “Dragon” themed show (gotta get that product placement/ad cash!) We’ve Tony Schiavone, Excalibur, Jr and Taz on commentary, so let’s get to the review!

Match #1: 2 Out Of 3 Falls Match – Bryan Danielson def. Daniel Garcia The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:

Danielson and Garcia grappled on the ground until Danielson got the mount. Garcia got out but Danielson started the ground and pound. Garcia transitioned to a knee bar and both competitors began to exchange kicks. Danielson got a heel hook to counter the knee bar. Garcia backed Bryan into the corner and then slapped him. Bryan connected with an open palm strike and followed up with a suplex. Garcia used a butterfly suplex on Bryan Danielson and then applied an arm lock.

Welcome to this week’s Ring Of Honor review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and I missed a few weeks already, due to forgetting and being pulled in a few different directions otherwise. I’m back and ready to pretend I didn’t miss a few weeks. Last week’s review was great. I’m the best. F–k Chris Hyatt! Chris Hyatt is dead! Triple H was a p—y anyway! I say it’s time that the greatest ever continues the good work. Long live me! Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m pregnant. Ring Of Honor starts now.

Match #1: Quinn McKay b. Mandy Leon – Roh Women’s Championship Tournament First Round Match The following is courtesy of rohwrestling.com:

McKay speared Leon at the opening bell. McKay locked on Tangerine Dream, but Leon escaped and rolled out of the ring. Leon grabbed McKay’s foot and pulled her from the ring,...

Welcome to this week’s Ring Of Honor review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have… Virgil: Got that ass yet? Me: Excuse me? Virgil: Bamalam! Me: What? Virgil: Lick d–k-stick prick! Me: Now wait a minute… Virgil: Where Is Carmen Sandiego?! Me: Huh? Virgil: Come get this Olive Garden bread-stick…in the ass! Me: Okay! Ring Of Honor starts now! Gotta go! Virgil: Open matte! Me: Now that didn’t make a lick of sense!

Match #1: Jay & Mark Briscoe b. Joe Keys & Dante Caballero The following is courtesy of rohwrestling.com:

After last week’s Fight on the Farm, the Briscoes are back together and, as Papa Briscoe demanded, starting at the bottom to work their way back into title contention. The Briscoes isolated Keys early. After Keys tagged in Caballero, Caballero slammed Jay Briscoe and hit a backbreaker for a two count.

Welcome to this week’s Ring Of Honor review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have the T.V. Title match between Tracy Williams and Tony Deppen. That’s gonna be a good one. It’s a pretty varied card on this occasion, with…what the… Chip Kazungas: Howdy ma’am! I’mmmmmmmmm… (shot in face) Me: That character sucked. Roh TV starts now.

Match #1: Flamita def. Bandido The following is courtesy of rohwrestling.com:

Flamita connected on a dropkick that knocked his former MexiSquad partner out of the ring. Flamita hit a dive and then rammed Bandido into the barricade. Back inside the ring, Flamita got a near fall after a running boot to the face in the corner. Bandido hit a spinning headscissors takeover that sent Flamita out of the ring. Bandido followed with Fosbury Flop and then repeatedly slammed Flamita’s knee into the post.

Welcome to this week’s Ring Of Honor review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and Ring Of Honor is the only league as of late who is doing this right. It’s a pleasure to be here to promote episode 501 of Roh TV. Let’s see how it turns out.

Match #1: Eli Isom vs. Dak Draper (Time Limit Draw) The following is courtesy of rohwrestling.com

Two rising stars who appear destined to be wearing championship gold in the future will square off in a one-on-one match for the first time, but certainly not the last. Since returning to Roh last month, Isom has recorded impressive victories over Rey Horus and Lsg. In 2018, less than a year into his career, Isom scored pinfalls on former Roh World Champion Christopher Daniels and Shane Taylor. Draper, the 2019 Top Prospect Tournament winner, is 10-2 (.833) in one-on-one matches in his Roh career.

That was done too early. Did you know Mark Harmon is a psychopath? His dog is evil. I don’t know how Pam Dauber deals with it. He has a face made of wrinkled evil. Do you think she ever boinked Mork from Ork? I would plow his goofy ass ‘til next July. Wait…am I a man or woman? Let me check… I…can’t tell. Huh. Screw it. I’ll just go out with Jessica Biel.

Match #1: Dak Draper def. Fred Yehi The following is courtesy of rohwrestling.com:

Marty Scurll
Welcome to this review of Ring of Honor: Free Enterprise, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have Marty Scurll’s big free show to help save the league from looking lame. There’s some great wrestlers here…and Bateman. F—— Bateman. Okay, I wanna get right to it.

Match #1: Mark Haskins defeated Alex Shelley The following is courtesy of rohwrestling.com:

A back-and-forth battle between master technicians ended with Haskins forcing Shelley to submit to the Sharpshooter.

My Opinion: 3.8 out of 5 – This was some great stuff. The action was smooth, like fine tobacco. Smoke. Shelley and Haskins have a similar way of moving out in the ring that makes them mesh together really well. Smoke. Haskins got more out of beating Shelley than he did what’s his ass from Dudleyville. Ryong Keo in Mulim 18 yeogeol (1979)
Welcome to this week’s Ring Of Honor review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have plenty of…okay, one match worth watching. Damn it.

Match #1: The Bouncers defeated Pj Black & Brian Johnson The following is courtesy of rohwrestling.com:

The Bouncers set up for Closing Time on Johnson, but Black stopped them by kicking Milonas, who was perched on the top rope. Black followed with a springboard stomp to Bruiser. Johnson grabbed a chair and was about to nail Bruiser with it, but Black took the chair away from him. Bruiser shoved Johnson into Black, knocking Black out of the ring. The Bouncers hit Closing Time on Johnson for the win.

My Opinion: 2.6 out of 5 – Do I have to watch this s—?! Actually, I like The Bouncers, but their matches are just hard to watch. Black was here though…poor bastard.

Welcome to this week’s Ring Of Honor review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have Mad Men, which is one of the worst things I’ve ever seen, along with The Wire. Those shows have some of the lousiest acting I’ve ever sat through. Why does modern Hollywood have no sense of humor? Jim Brewer should have been on The Wire…woulda saved that trainwreck. Match #1: Dalton Castle & Joe Hendry defeated Master & Machine The following is courtesy of rohwrestling.com:

In a backstage segment taped prior to the match, Castle and Hendry talked about getting on track as a team. The Last Week in Wrestling #50 (Wrestling Round-Up)
Welcome to this edition of The Last Week In Wrestling, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and the critics hated Rey being a Palpatine. They actually thought that being a nobody was more devastating than being the descendant of the Emperor. I’d rather be Marge Debruge’s son than Adolf Hitler’s kid, if you catch my drift. That argument for Rise Of Skywalker being terrible is so stupid…there are many reasons to dislike Rise Of Skywalker, but Rey being cursed as the spawn of evil is not one of them. Did Rey even care who her parents were in The Force Awakens? I was under the impression Rey knew who here parents were and didn’t give a s— that they were poor. Any-way, I’m prattling on because wrestling often feels like this argument about Rey in Rise Of Skywalker, that being completely stupid.

‘Ring of Honor’ Review (Dec 15th 2019)
Welcome to this week’s Ring Of Honor review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have a couple from the Unauthorized show of a few weeks ago. We’ve got a decent one and a great one, which is less than the critics can say about The Rise Of Skywalker (they’re mad that Leia wasn’t revealed to be Darth Revan because it would have subverted expectations). Anyway, we have a show to get to.

Welcome to this review of Ring of Honor: The Experience, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have a show that was voted on by fans, so Sanjaya will win. Ha! I don’t care if that American Idol joke is old. I’m a freakin’ genius! Okay, alright, I’m an idiot. Happy? Let’s see what the fans voted on already.

Match #1: Dragon Lee defeated Jeff Cobb The following is courtesy of rohwrestling.com:

Cobb was chosen as Lee’s opponent by receiving 41 percent of the vote, beating out Pj Black (31 pct.), Kenny King (15 pct.) and Eli Isom (12 pct). Lee scored what some consider an upset by turning a Tour of the Islands attempt into a crucifix pin.

My Opinion: 3.5 out of 5 – This was a really good match, but it’s a shame that Cobb lost again. Who did he piss off? Greg Gilliland/Gilleland/who f—–‘ cares maybe?...

‘Mlw: Fusion’ Review (Oct 26th 2019)
Welcome to this week’s Major League Wrestling: Fusion, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have more from pro wrestling’s resident whack-a-mole league. In my head, that’s a compliment. Mike Tyson has the world’s most intimidating lisp. Snakes can’t tap dance. When I was a baby, I weighed 249 pounds. My mom pushed me out and said, “Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! My Opinion: 3.4 out of 5 – This was a real hard-hitting match that came across like a volcano fighting Larry The Cable Guy in a demolition derby. I bet every butcher shop in the world would hire these guys if they could. Beat meat! Ideally, there would have been more finesse to this, but they gave the people the kind of match that would be exciting, which is “Watch out for boulder, Indy! Match #1: The Briscoes defeated The Bouncers – Ring Of Honor World Tag Team Title Match

My Opinion: 1.5 out of 5 – The Briscoes did fine here, but this just wasn’t much of a match. Going around ten minutes, this felt like a bowling ball landing on your foot and only hurting half as much as you thought it would. The Bouncers leave a lot to be desired, but they do have ability, so seeing them falter is unfortunate. I bet if this had happened in a bar this would have been a fun one,...

This was good for an opener, but it deserved to go a bit longer…that’s WWE talk! Before I get on a tangent, this was some good stuff, but it needed more time.

Welcome to this week’s Major League Wrestling review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have an odd one to get to, so let’s do so before I go cock-eyed.

Match #1: Dragon Lee defeated Rich Swann The following is courtesy of Mlw.com:

An aggressive Rich Swann took on Dragon Lee in an important middleweight bout to open the show. The two were obviously an even match in the early going. The two apparently even think alike, throwing dropkicks and then flipping to kip up at the same time. Neither man could keep the upper hand long. Lee hit an amazing reverse rana, but Swann hopped up and landed a massive spin kick Swann eventually grabbed the momentum and thought he had the match in hand. He went to the top rope for his spinning 450 he calls the Phoenix Splash. But Dragon Lee was nowhere to be found.

Match #1: Teddy Hart beat Gringo Loco, Kotto Brazil, El Hijo de La Park and Dezmond Xavier Fatal-Five Way Ladder Match for the Mlw Middleweight Championship The following is courtesy of mlw.com:

Hart wasn’t even booked in the match. But in true Teddy Hart fashion, he went ahead and found a way to get in the four-way ladder match. First, he attacked Dezmond Xavier before he could enter the ring. When Kotto Brazil took exception and went to attack Hart outside the ring, Brazil got the worst of the exchange and was helped to the back. Match #1: Teddy Hart (with Brian Pillman) defeated Jason Cade The following is courtesy of Mlw.com:

While the Hart Foundation is looking for a shot at the World Tag Team Championships, Teddy Hart has an impending match with one half of the champs, Pentagon Jr. next week in Miami. While Hart is focused on defeating Pentagon Jr. and keeping the pressure on the Lucha Bros. (Penta and brother Rey Fenix), he was faced with Jason Cade and his Bad Attitude this week on Mlw Fusion.

15 Most Insane Wrestling Spots Of The Week (Dec 6)
WWE.com

Chances are high that Joey Ryan and his extremely unorthodox test of strength have flooded your social media over the past week. While that was a move that deservedly received mainstream press coverage, it wasn’t the only spot worth highlighting from the previous week.

A table war has been heating up between The Wyatt Family and a trio of Ecw originals in WWE. In Ring of Honor, Dalton Castle has been his usual creative self by putting more reversals on a piledriver than previously thought possible. In Mexico’s Cmll, Kamaitachi and Dragon Lee competed in a can’t miss matchup that was chock full of moments that were can’t miss.

Joey Ryan and his domestic object will get their moment in the spotlight, but so will the rest of the insane spots alongside it.

100 Great Kung Fu Movies – Part 4 (39-21)
When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.

I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.

I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.

Anyway, thank you...

The top 10 Brucesploitation films
Many films tried to capitalise on the popularity of the late, great Bruce Lee. Here are our ten favourites...

1973 was the year that kung fu broke in America. The release of the popular Five Fingers Of Death (aka King Boxer) in March set the fuse and when Enter The Dragon (the first Hong Kong martial arts film co-produced by a major Us studio) followed in August, it exploded.

Although Bruce Lee was billed as a co-star in Enter The Dragon alongside John Saxon because casting an Asian actor in the lead role of an American film was unheard of at the time (and would remain so until 1982 when Sho Kosugi topped the bill for Revenge Of The Ninja), it was Bruce who captured the public's imagination. His amazing look and style, his astonishing talent for acting, writing and directing, and his unparalleled martial arts ability made him an icon for...

5 Awesome End Fight Scenes – Part 3
What we lack more and more these days are epic fight scenes in the final part of kung Fu/Martial Art movies. We have seen less and less one on one fight scenes in the final battle over the past 15-20 years, which is a shame but we have seen recently a few flicks bringing that winning formula back.

‘The Man With the Iron Fists’ Blu-ray Review
Stars: RZA, Lucy Liu, Dave Bautista, Russell Crowe, Rick Yune, Jamie Chung, Cung Le | Written and Directed by RZA

Presented by Quentin Tarantino and produced in collaboration with filmmaker Eli Roth, The Man With the Iron Fists is the big-screen directorial debut of Wu-Tang Clan member and huge kung-fu movie fan RZA, and is a throwback to the types of wildly over the top kung-fu films that flooded flea-pit cinemas and video store shelves in the late 70s and early 80s; and tells the epic story of warriors, assassins and a lone outsider hero in 19th-century China who must unite to destroy the clan traitor who would destroy them all.

Since his arrival in China’s Jungle Village, the town’s blacksmith (RZA) has been forced by radical tribal factions to create elaborate tools of destruction. When the clans’ brewing war boils over, the stranger channels an ancient energy to...

Trailer Trash
It's time for more various oddball trailers from the far reaches of cinema obscurity. So, without any further ado, let's check out some "coming attractions"!

Dr. Alien (1989):

Ah, Empire Pictures. What's not to love about the infamous production company that gave us such 80's cult favorites as Ghoulies, Trancers, Re-Animator, TerrorVision and Psychos in Love? Well, here's one from Empire that I bet you probably missed; Dr. Alien. This goofy sci-fi teen comedy stars Billy Jacoby (Just One of the Guys, Parker Lewis Can't Lose) as Wesley, a nerdy student who becomes a sexual dynamo after being injected with a serum by his new smokin' hot teacher, Ms. Xenobia played by Judy Landers (Stewardess School, Armed and Dangerous), who just happens to be an alien. Sound ridiculous enough for ya yet? This nugget of pure late-80's video fun was directed by David DeCoteau, who got his start directing...
