Chi-Leung Lo

Ching-Wan Lau
Film Review: Come Back Home (2022) by Lo Chi Leung
Ching-Wan Lau
A return to the big screen by Hong Kong screenwriter and director Lo Chi Leung since directed probably his best films “The Vanished Murderer” (2015) and “The Bullet Vanishes” (2012) starring Lau Ching Wan. Before that, he also directed Leslie Cheung in “Inner Senses” (2002) and “Double Tap” (2000). Unfortunately, “Come Back Home” (2022), a search-and-rescue drama funded by Mainland China and starring Donnie Yen, was a big flop at the box office. Otherwise it would have been a nice return for Lo and Yen in a purely dramatic non-action role.

Where to watch

Set in a snowy ski resort in Chang Bai Shan, northeast China, the story concerns a family of four, father De (Donnie Yen), his wife Min Xuan (Han Xue) and their two young children. They are on their way to Lake Tianchi to see the “lake monster” which according to their son, Lele (Yuen Jin Hui), really existed. However, due to...

Film Review: Polar Rescue (2022) by Lo Chi-Leung
Image
At some juncture, every action star must face their greatest challenge in their own mortality. As Donnie Yen enters his 60's, the inevitability of time means his action career on screen is now entering its twilight years. “Polar Express” therefore represents a slight change in direction. A role that focuses as much on his acting prowess as on his physical. With Well Go USA releasing this latest work, it's an opportunity to see how he fares.

De (Donnie Yen) takes his wife Xuan (Cecilia Han) and their two children away for a vacation. An argument with his son Lele results in the child going missing. The desperate parents go to the local police and Chief Bai (Tianlai Hou) heads up the search. With time running out and revelations about De's actions coming to the surface, the chances of Lele's rescue diminish.

Release date set for Hk chiller Curse Of The Deserted
Finally, news we’ve been waiting for. Chi-Leung Law’s (‘Inner Senses,’ ‘Koma’) latest horror chiller - starring Kitty Zhang and Shawn Yue - Curse of the Deserted has just been given a release (and a nicely macabre poster to boot) date, and its heading for Hong Kong theatres on August 13th. Still no sign of a full trailer, but there’s a promo trailer to watch in the mean time, whilst we keep em peeled for a more. Synopsis: In his new book “The Deserted Village”, young writer Guo (Yue) wrote about the titular curse….It began 500 years ago in the Ming Dynasty, when one of the villagers died of terminal illness. The widow Yanzi vowed to stay with her husband forever. When the man suddenly returned to life, his horrified neighbours believed him to be a monster. They burned him to death and torched his mansion. The devastated...

Hong Kong horror Curse Of The Deserted teases
It was March last year that we first reported that ‘Inner Senses,’ ‘Koma’ director Chi-Leung Law was heading back to horror with his latest scare flick Curse of the Deserted, starring Kitty Zhang and Shawn Yue. Since then it’s been more than a little quiet and - a year being a long time in Hong Kong movie production - we were starting to think the production had hit the rails. But now out of the blue an impressive (if short) teaser trailer has appeared. One reason it may be taking its time is the need for a long post production. We’ve also turned up an FX reel for the film, which shows some pretty complex CG works is being done. They’ve spent some real coin on this one. The teaser trail is bordering on being not work safe. Its not overly gory, but your boss might not...

The teaser trail is bordering on not work safe. Its not overly gory or violent,...

They burned him to death and torched his mansion. The devastated Yanzi upheld her vow and threw herself into the fire. Kitty heads for horror in Curse Of The Deserted
Hanging up her Lacrosse kit from her performance in the hit martial action pic “Shaolin Girl,” Kitty Zhang Yuqi heads for darker climes in the new horror; Curse of the Deserted. Adding to the films heavy hitting teen idol cast Shawn Yue is also set to star, and better yet, veteran Hk horror director Chi-Leung Law (Inner senses, Koma) will handle proceedings behind the camera. So far it all sounds like a recipe for success. Production has only just begun, but the movie is tipped for release this year. Synopsis: An ancient love curse drew four students to visit a haunted village. When the trip turns horribly wrong, it's up to a young writer and his ex-girlfriend to face the supernatural behind the curse.
