Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.
The Thing prequel director on scrapped sequel plans and FX regrets
Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.
A dozen years have gone by since the release of director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing (watch the prequel Here). Looking back at the project now, van Heijningen has some regrets over the way the special effects were handled on the film, and that he was never able to make the sequel they had plans for.

Directed by van Heijningen from a screenplay written by Eric Heisserer and based on the short story Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell (using the pen name Don A. Stuart), The Thing 2011 has the following synopsis: After Norwegian researchers discover an alien ship buried in the ice, paleontologist Kate Lloyd joins the team at the isolated Arctic outpost to investigate. She finds an organism that appears to have perished in the crash eons ago but, in fact, is about to awake. Freed from its icy prison,...

2011’s The Thing Prequel Connects Perfectly with the John Carpenter Movie
Image
Warning: The Thing spoilers jump out of nowhere in this piece!

“The last place you want to be in a storm in Antarctica is locked up with a bunch of Norwegian guys,” Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a Columbia graduate and vertebrate paleontologist, is warned as she is flown into the tundra surrounding “Thule,” the central research station in The Thing (2011). The sequestered Norse researchers have never seen John Carpenter’s claustrophobic 1982 alien invasion classic, The Thing. After all, director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and writer Eric Heisserer’s 2011 prequel is set at the Antarctic facility from which the very Thing from outer space splits at the beginning of the ‘82 film. So the newest movie, which is finding a quasi-renaissance on Netflix these days, is a translation of the prior events by Heijningen and Heisserer.

In the snowbound original film, when exploring a deserted outpost in the aftermath of an as-yet-unknown extraterrestrial disaster,...

What Happened To Lars In The Thing
Image
To find out what happened to Lars in The Thing (2011), fans will have to watch both John Carpenter's 1982 classic and the prequel of the same name. Lars (Jørgen Langhelle)) is part of a crew of researchers at a Norwegian research station called "Thule" studying a spacecraft buried in the Antarctic. While the ship is at Thule for observation, an alien entity breaks out of its ice-covered hull, disappearing into the station and murdering Lars' sled dog. The alien then begins picking off the crew one by one, copying each cell from its victims to create a perfect duplicate and lull their peers into a false sense of security before striking again.

After Henrik, a mutated Griggs, and Olav are killed, American paleontologist Kate Lloyd (horror queen Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is determined that no one else can leave the station for fear that once The Thing is introduced to a larger population,...

How 2011’s The Thing Fits Into The Original Movie’s Timeline
Image
Not only is 2011's The Thing not a remake of the John Carpenter movie of the same name, but it actually perfectly ties into the 1982 sci-fi film. Directed by Dutch filmmaker Matthijs van Heijningen Jr (The Forgotten Battle), and starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, 2011's The Thing focuses on a group of scientists at a Norwegian Antarctic research station who discover an alien spacecraft buried in the ice. Much like in John Carpenter's movie, and the original 1951 film adaptation of John W. Campbell's novella Who Goes There?, The Thing from Another World, the alien springs to life and begins killing people one by one.

Despite the plot similarities to both 1982's The Thing, and 1951's The Thing from Another World, 2011's The Thing is not a traditional remake of either film. Instead, it works hard to fit into the same canon as John Carpenter's film,...

George Clooney and Grant Heslov Plan Pioneer Remake
Pioneer (2013)
Just days after their latest true-story drama The Monuments Men opened in theaters, producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov are teaming with Sony Pictures to remake the Norwegian thriller Pioneer. At this time, George Clooney is not attached to direct, with the studio currently seeking a screenwriter for this English-language version.

Erik Skjoldbj&#230rg directed the original Pioneer, which opened in Norway last year after debuting at the Toronto International Film Festival. The story is set in the 1980s, at the height of the Norwegian Oil Boom, following a man and his brother who are tasked with laying a pipeline through the North Sea, diving deeper than anyone had ever gone before. When tragedy strikes, the man becomes determined to find out the truth about what really happened, while realizing his life is in danger.

Elizabeth Cantillon is overseeing the project for Sony. The original thriller starred Wes Bentley, Stephen Lang and Aksel Hennie.

Film Review: The Thing (2011): Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton
The Thing (2011) Film Review, a movie directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ulrich Thomsen, Kim Bubbs, Stig Henrik Hoff, Jonathan Walker, and Carsten Bjornlund.

One could say that The Thing (2011) is like the Halloween remake and the Star Wars prequels: the original is better than new incarnation in almost every way. Like the Halloween remake, what was copied over into this The Thing from John Carpenter’s original film was done better the first time and what material was originated in this film should have been expanded upon. Like the Star Wars prequels, The Thing should have created its special effects in the same manner as the original film instead of going the hyper real CGI route. In that way, this prequel and its effects could have seamlessly transferred the viewer from one film (the prequel) to the...

The Thing (2011) - Blu-ray Review
2011.s The Thing is an unnecessary CGI-slick prequel to John Carpenter.s 1982 classic sci-fi/horror film The Thing. It isn.t horrible and does several things right, but is easily forgettable as soon as the end credits roll. Based on John W. Campbell Jr. short story "Who Goes There?," the prequel was directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and written by Eric Heisserer. The film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Paul Braunstein, Trond Espen Seim, Kim Bubbs, Jørgen Langhelle, Jan Gunnar Røise, Stig Henrik Hoff, Kristofer Hivju, Jo Adrian Haavind, and Carsten Bjørnlund. Heijningen and company do an excellent job of tying the prequel to Carpenter.s film (a fire axe placed...

'The Thing': The Reviews Are In!
How does the 2011 'Thing' stack up against the '82 original?

By Kara Warner

Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton in "The Thing"

Photo: Universal Pictures

The subject of film remakes and reboots has become a sensitive one. With two variations on that theme opening at the box office this weekend, "Footloose" and "The Thing," respectively, there are very defined, conflicting opinions on Hollywood's continued obsession with churning out new takes on old classics.

With regard to "The Thing," a prequel to John Carpenter's '82 film, the critical conversation is especially opinionated, given the fact that the horror community takes its films very seriously and that the original is so beloved by fans. Some critics were satisfied and entertained by Dutch filmmaker Matthijs van Heijningen's take on the film, along with the performances by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton and Ulrich Thomsen; some were not.

Review: The Thing
Let me begin by stating the obvious: following in the footsteps of John Carpenter’s The Thing isn’t an easy thing to do – pun intended. Although Carptenter’s movie bombed when it first came out in the summer of 1982 when E.T.: The Extraterrestrial was America’s outer space visitor of choice, VHS and cable brought The Thing to a wider and appreciative audience.

The Thing is not just one of Carpenter’s best movies, it’s also the benchmark for creature effects. Rob Bottin created all of the phantasmagorical transformations of the Thing ten years before James Cameron would pull off the T-1000 effects, and more than a decade from Steven Spielberg’s rampaging dinosaurs from Jurassic Park. Making a new Thing movie with CG effects seems almost blasphemous.

If you go in expecting that same level of intensity and greatness as is found in the ’82 Thing,...

B-Roll Footage for The Thing
Some of the footage in the video shows the creature design. But to me the most spectacular feature is that you can see how the Norwegian base camp is recreated almost identically to the one you saw briefly in the 1982 version. Even the block of ice that the creature escapes from is identical. Another great piece about this footage is that you can see the locale in which they filmed. This wasn't filmed in some studio, this was done in the snow covered mountains in Canada. The look of the 1982 film, with that feeling that the location was devoid of life outside of the camp really added to the creepiness of the overall film, and this one seems to be right on target. The prequel is directed by Matthijs van Heijningen jr. The cast includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Joel Edgerton, Dennis Storhøi, Trond Espen Seim, Jørgen Langhelle, Jonathan...

First Creepy Clip and New Photo from The Thing
October 14 is just around the corner and I cannot freakin’ wait to see the prequel to John Carpenter’s “The Thing” when it finally hits theaters. I’m a fan of Carpenter’s, so I’m definitely looking forward to this film. Granted, we all know what’s going to happen to everyone, but I love the “who can you really trust?” paranoia vibe Carpenter established. But we’re here to talk about the upcoming prequel. After six new images from the film hit the web yesterday, the first clip from the film has been released, and it makes sure to set in the scare factor. Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., the film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Kim Bubbs, Stig Henrik Hoff, Trond Espen Seim, Jørgen Langhelle, Kristofer Hivju, Jan Gunnar Røise, and Jo Adrian Haavind. The Thing: Prequel's Creature Design & Video Breakdown of the 1982 Version
Uploaded by the unofficial The Thing Facebook page Was Childs an alien? The second part of the Video really answers this question, but the first part is great as well. It's funny I've watched this film probably twenty times and I always ask that question once the end happens. Finally we have real solid reasons to backup the speculation that Keith David's character was in fact infected. See if you agree with the assessment. The prequel is directed by Matthijs van Heijningen jr. What we’ve learned from the trailer for The Thing
Having viewed the trailer for The Thing several times, we set down all that we’ve learned about this forthcoming prequel…

We've been waiting for some time to get a first proper look at director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr's 'companion piece' to John Carpenter's The Thing, and last Thursday, the first trailer was officially released.

Now, given that everyone involved in the film as insisted that it's a prequel rather than a remake of Carpenter's 1982 classic, it's remarkable just how similar the two films looks.

As you're no doubt already aware, The Thing 2011 is set in the Norwegian camp briefly seen at the start of the 1982 movie. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is the film's star, which makes for an interesting departure from Kurt Russell's alpha male lead in the original. Joel Edgerton, meanwhile, plays what could be described as the role previously filled by Russell. He plays a grizzled helicopter pilot,...

Raunchy New Poster Debuts for Inside the Whore
It may be the weekend, but what better time to get a little raunchy? A new teaser poster for Norwegian film director Reinert Kiil's Inside the Whore landed in our inbox today, and since it's decidedly Nsfw, Saturday evening is definitely appropriate for its debut.

Inside the Whore, Reinert Kiil's follow-up to his successful rape-revenge horror thriller Hora (English title, The Whore), is not for the faint of heart as the film's tagline describes it as "A meta-film with meta-violence within a meta-production". The director promises a film that beats Hora by milestones when it comes to cruelty.
