Kathryn Newton reanimates Cole Sprouse in the first trailer for Lisa Frankenstein.

Set in 1989 and described as a "coming of Rage love story," the trailer for the upcoming horror comedy film shows Newton's Lisa deciding to bring a "handsome corpse" (Sprouse) back to life using a repurposed tanning bed. Of course, the corpse is still not fully human, leading the two to hunt down and chop off body parts that can restore Sprouse's corpse to its former glory. Lisa Frankenstein was written by Diablo Cody, who previously scripted the 2007 Oscar-winning film Juno, and was directed by Zelda Williams in her feature-length directorial debut.

Focus Features is set to release Zelda Williams’ feature directorial debut in theaters Feb. 9, just in time for a twisted Valentine’s Day date option. The film centers on Lisa (Newton), a high school outcast who is smitten with a handsome corpse (Sprouse) from the Victorian era and accidentally brings him back to life. Carla Gugino, Liza Soberano and Joe Chrest round out the cast.

The trailer features a lot of axe-swinging as the potential relationship takes some bloody turns. “Taffy says it’s a waste of time to try and fix a boy,” Newton tells her undead suitor about a friend’s advice. “It’s better to just accept a guy’s flaws.”

Focus Features is targeting a February 9, 2024 theatrical premiere date for Lisa Frankenstein. The studio’s release date announcement came with a super-short video that offered a first look at the horror comedy described as an updated twist on the classic Frankenstein story.

Cole Sprouse (Riverdale) and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies) lead a cast that includes Liza Soberano (Make It With You), Henry Eikenberry (The Crowded Room), Joe Chrest (Stranger Things), and Carla Gugino (The Fall of the House of Usher). Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body) returns to the horror genre with Lisa Frankenstein, and Zelda Williams (daughter of Robin Williams) makes her feature film directorial debut with the project.

Theatrical releases continue to be added to the 2024 calendar, which is a very good sign given that we still haven’t seen the shake-up yet from the prolonged SAG-AFTRA strike. Set in 1989, Lisa Frankenstein follows an unpopular high school student (Newton) who accidentally re-animates a handsome Victorian corpse (Sprouse) during a lightning storm and starts to rebuild him into the man of her dreams, using the broken tanning bed in her garage. While we hear that Chrest will be playing the titular character’s father Dale, details as to the others’ roles haven’t been disclosed. Academy Award and Tony winner Diablo Cody scripted the film, which has entered production in New Orleans.

Mason Novick is producing for Mxn Entertainment, alongside his frequent collaborator Cody, with Jeffrey Lampert serving as executive producer.

Taking place in 1989, the film follows a high school outcast who accidentally brings a handsome Victorian corpse to life during a lightning storm. With the help of a broken tanning bed in her garage, she sets out to turn him into the man of her dreams.

Cody and Mason Novick of Mxn Entertainment will reunite as producers, having previously collaborated on films such as “Tully,” “Jennifer’s Body,” “Young Adult” and “Juno,” for which Cody won Best Original Screenplay at the 2008 Academy Awards. Jeff Lampert will serve as executive producer. Michelle Momplaisir, Focus Features’ Vice President of Production and Development, will serve as the creative executive.

Samuel Goldwyn Films said Monday that it has acquired North American rights to Randall Miller's Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing and Charm School. The film, which premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival, stars Robert Carlyle, Marisa Tomei, John Goodman, Mary Steenburgen, Sean Astin, Donnie Wahlberg and Danny DeVito. Samuel Goldwyn Films will release the film in September. Based on a short film created 15 years ago by Miller and wife Jody Savin, Dancing centers on a widowed man's life that is turned upside down when he embarks on a journey to find a dying man's long-lost love. The film also stars David Paymer, Adam Arkin, Sonia Braga, Ernie Hudson, Miguel Sandoval, Elden Henson and Camryn Manheim. It was produced by Miller, Savin, Morris Ruskin and Eileen Craft. Executive producers are Art Klein, Ronald Savin, Eduardo Castro, Carlos Gidi, Kevin Reidy, Lon Bender and Jeffrey Lampert. Co-producers are Randi Hiller and Sarah Finn.
