Born in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire to a father who was a a glaze maker, Alan studied acting with RADA and went straight into rep and did 49 plays in a many weeks. He loves doing Shakespeare and has done Lear, Macbeth and Twelfth Night among others which is a big change from his family background of gypsies and pirates and his original intention of being a monk to help the under- privileged until he found that he needed five O levels. In keeping with his family background he wears a gold ear-ring but is now a long way from that in that he's married to Diana Dors and lives in a secluded house near Ascot
