France’s president Emanuel Macron has led tributes to titan of French cinema Alain Delon following his death aged 88.

Macron posted on X:

Monsieur Klein ou Rocco, le Guépard ou le Samouraï, Alain Delon a incarné des rôles légendaires, et fait rêver le monde. Prêtant son visage inoubliable pour bouleverser nos vies.

Mélancolique, populaire, secret, il était plus qu’une star : un monument français. pic.twitter.com/1JTqPfVo5n

— Emmanuel Macron (@EmmanuelMacron) August 18, 2024

“Mr. Klein or Rocco, the Leopard or the Samurai, Alain Delon has played legendary roles and made the world dream. Lending his unforgettable face to shake up our lives.

Melancholic, popular, secretive, he was more than a star: a French monument.”

The country’s culture minister Rachida Dati wrote:

“We believe he was immortal … his talent, his charisma, his aura made him destined for a Hollywood career at a young age, but he chose France.”

Alain Delon n’est plus.

Jean-Pierre Melville and the Art of the Interview
Image
Jean-Pierre Melville in Breathless. The artist’s interview at its best—at its most entertaining and challenging—is a space for self-mythologization. Interviews can give the illusion of intimacy and deepen our understanding of the subject’s work and perspectives, but the exaggerations, contradictions, and omissions that a complex public image affords can frustrate that understanding, add mystique, and set in motion a perhaps knowingly futile pursuit of the artist's "real self." A good interview provides us with more questions than answers. All interviews involve the subject’s negotiation between what to reveal and what to conceal; the result could be called their persona. And if they so desire, everything is costume: the way the artist moves, talks, dresses, holds a cigarette, reacts to the interviewer or audience. Consider Andy Warhol’s masterful inarticulacy from behind his matte, pale mask, dodging the press’s intrusive questions; the way Prince sets...

Jacques Perrin at an event for Peindre ou faire l'amour (2005)
Jacques Perrin, French Actor and ‘Cinema Paradiso’ Star, Dies at 80
Jacques Perrin at an event for Peindre ou faire l'amour (2005)
Jacques Perrin, the French actor best known for starring in Giuseppe Tornatore’s Oscar-winning film “Cinema Paradiso,” has died. He was 80 years old.

“The family has the immense sadness of informing you of the death of filmmaker Jacques Perrin, who died on Thursday, April 21 in Paris. He passed away peacefully,” Perrin’s family announced in a statement sent to news agency Agence France Press.

Perrin got an early start to his career, first appearing on screen in “Gates of the Night” — albeit uncredited — at just five years old. Over the course of his career, Perrin starred in more than 70 films, becoming a fixture in French and Italian cinema.

In 1988, Perrin played adult filmmaker Salvatore in “Cinema Paradiso,” a role that would become one of his most recognizable.

Jacques Perrin was also a prolific director. He helmed “Winged Migration” with Philippe Labro in 2001, with the film going on to notch an...

French actor, director and producer Jacques Perrin, a fixture for decades in both French and Italian cinema — where he was best known for his role in Giuseppe Tornatore’s Oscar-winning “Cinema Paradiso” — has died. He was 80.

“The family has the immense sadness of informing you of the death of filmmaker Jacques Perrin, who died on Thursday, April 21 in Paris. He passed away peacefully,” Perrin’s family announced in a statement sent to news agency Agence France Press by his son, Mathieu Simonet. The cause of death was not specified.

Born in Paris on July 13, 1941, Perrin, starting in the 1950s, starred in more than 70 films and co-directed others, including the Oscar-nominated “Winged Migration” (2001), in tandem with Philippe Labro, about the voyage of migratory birds which used in-flight cameras and was a box office hit.

The soft-spoken thesp had landed his first leading role starring opposite Italy’s Claudia Cardinale in Valerio Zurlini...

Entire governing board of France’s César Academy resigns
Collective resignation comes amid intense criticism of 45-year-old organisation over gender parity, diversity and transparency.

The entire governing board of France’s Academy of Cinema Arts and Techniques, which organises the country’s César awards, resigned on Thursday evening (Feb 13) following weeks of criticism about the way the body is run.

“To honour those who made films in 2019, and to re-establish some calm and ensure that party for cinema remains a party, the board of the Association for the Promotion of Cinema (Apc) has taken the unanimous decision to resign,” the board announced in a statement put out by the César Academy on Thursday.

Blu-ray Review: Army of Shadows (Criterion Collection)
Once I got to the end of my first viewing of Jean-Pierre Melville's Army of Shadows I realized a close analogy was to compare it to a weather forecast for a thunderstorm. If you do any research into why Criterion would release this film on Blu-ray after their 2007 DVD edition hit shelves following a complete restoration of the 1969 classic you'll find reviewers shouting from the rooftops about the film's quality. Essentially, even though this film begins as something of a mild rainstorm with hints of thunder on the horizon by the time it's over you are in for one hell of a thunder and lightning show.

Dark clouds loom as Army of Shadows opens with marching German troops in front of the Arc de Triomphe in a scene Melville continued to move back-and-forth from the beginning of the film, to the end and ultimately back to the beginning. The...

Bollore Sets Course for Direct 8
PARIS -- France's Bollore group on Friday unveiled its programming slate for Direct 8, one of three new channels that will bow March 31, as part of France's new digital terrestrial television offer of 14 free-to-air channels. Owned by Bollore, an industrial group with revenues of €5.6 billion ($7.5 billion), Direct 8 is "uniquely positioned," compared to other French channels, according to channel vice president Philippe Labro, a French writer and film director. Aimed at an audience "from eight to 88," the general interest channel will benefit from an initial budget of €30 million ($40.3 million), of which €20 million ($26.9 million) will be spent on programming, Labro said in a statement. A total investment of €180 million ($242.3 million) is envisioned over the next seven years, with the channel set to break even only after that period, and to record a profit after 12 years of existence.
