CinemaAashiq Abu’s remake of Vincent’s 1964 horror classic ‘Bhargavi Nilayam’ has brought back to spotlight an old debate, surrounding the necessity of remakes within Malayalam cinema.Still from 'Neelavelicham'Remakes are not in the least unusual, not down in Kerala, where people get a heavy dose of Priyadarshan movies. Films have been handed between languages, scripts rewritten to Hindi or Tamil from Malayalam. Priyadarshan is not the only culprit, just the more notorious one. Director Vincent’s Bhargavi Nilayam has been considered a classic, a horror movie that set the standards for horror movies,...

FlashbackSince the release of Sathyan Anthikad’s ‘Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam’ in 1986, Sreenivasan’s inherent goofiness and Mohanlal’s adorable naiveté have worked together to build an admirable synergy on screen.Neelima MenonThey last shared screen space in T K Rajeev Kumar’s satirical drama Oru Naal Varum (2010), which was also written by Sreenivasan. In the film, Mohanlal played a Vigilance officer who is trying to build a case against a corrupt town planner (Sreenivasan). Much water has flown under the bridge since then, including a spoof film deriding the superstars, with Mohanlal getting the maximum barbs. Though the superstar seemed to have chosen to brush it aside, they also never came together on screen again, much to the disappointment of Malayali cinephiles. But last month, when the duo finally shared a stage after a decade, and Mohanlal planted a kiss on the frail cheeks of Sreenivasan, social media took a collective sigh.

CinemaNo one looking at Bhadra would think of her as a femme fatale, her face is stripped of makeup, her eyes indolent. But this charade of naivety is all part of a larger plan.Neelima MenonScreengrab from Disney+ Hotstar The sun is slowly rising. A speck of orange is almost hidden behind the lazy coconut trees, and the sky has turned indigo. There is a small boat ferrying over the backwaters. Night slips into dawn, bringing a large houseboat filled with passengers. Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu builds its world in the backdrop of Kerala’s backwaters. It captures the exquisiteness of the state (cinematography by Ravi K Chandran) just as promised in the tourism brochures – the enigmatic backwaters, swinging coconut trees, acres of lush greenery, paddy fields, humongous house boats and magnificent nalukettu houses with large front and backyards. Director Tk Rajeev Kumar uses an unusual setting to unleash a tale of a simmering revenge.
