This Day That Year: Ram Gopal Varma’s My Wife’s Murder clocks 20 years
Image
Subhash K Jha, in this new edition of This Day That Year, shines the spotlight on a film that long before Housefull 5, Ram Gopal Varma tried the two-ending gimmick with 2005’s My Wife’s Murder, which he produced that released in 2005.

Pushing the envelope comes easy to Ram Gopal Varma, especially in a film that’s about a man being pushed around by his wife to the point of no return. Anil Kapoor gets an opportunity to play the harassed husband and protective papa all over again.

This methodical actor slips into the role of the distraught husband with an almost discernible whoop of joy. Some moments of this thriller about a loser on the run shake your soul. Others just leave you cold. At the end of the dreadful day, My Wife’s Murder is a film that’s cold at heart. The icy-cold feeling of a life...

Not Shah Rukh Khan! This Superstar Was The Original Choice For Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’s Lead Role
Image
Aamir Khan Nearly Cast In Cult Rom-Com ( Photo Credit – Netflix )

Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan have undoubtedly been two of the biggest and most bankable actors in the Indian film industry. As you know, they have never starred together as lead actors in a film. They had cameos in films like Laal Singh Chaddha and Luck by Chance but did not share screen space in these films.

The Film That Almost Starred Aamir Khan & Shah Rukh Khan

Back in the 90s, the two superstars were almost cast together in a romantic comedy film, which has gained a cult following. The film’s name is Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. According to an earlier report by News 18, Aamir Khan was the first choice to play the lead role of the adorable character Sunil in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. And Shah Rukh Khan, who was trying to make a mark in the film industry,...

This Day That Year: Revisting 2019’s Romeo Akbar Walter starring John Abraham
Image
Subhash K Jha, in a new installment of This Day That Year, revisits Romeo Akbar Walter which starred John Abraham, as it completes 6 years.

What makes them do it? No, I don’t mean the bravehearts like Meghna Gulzar and now Robby Grewal who dare to make films about those daredevils who risk their lives to act as Indian spies in Pakistan. But those unsung daredevils who sneak into Pakistan to glean information for their beloved motherland.

Towards the end of this intelligently written, well-crafted espionage drama, our spy hero’s boss, played with wizened aplomb by Jackie Shroff, mumbles, “He gave preference to his motherland over his own mother.”

Just a while back, John Abraham’s Romeo/Akbar/Walter had made Shroff promise, “No matter what happens, my Ammi must be looked after.”

Raw hits those raw nerves that all patriotic cinema avoids. This time, we go beyond the...

This Day That Year: Subhash K Jha Revisits 16 Years Of Sushmita Sen’s Karma Aur Holi
Image
Subhash K Jha, takes on Sushmita Sen’s Karma Aur Holi, which released in 2009, in this new This Day That Year feature.

A few minutes into this mish-mash of Woody Allen, George Bernard Shaw, Govind Nihalani, and Keshu Ramsay, you know the narrative is in trouble. The characters who come to Sushmita-Randeep’s home in New York for an afternoon of heavy-duty gossiping, bitching introspection, and confession seem to be speaking dialogues borrowed from a cheap American soap opera. The feelings and thoughts are not only assumed, but they are also devoid of any coherent pattern. The script tries to be sassy without the basic source material to carry off its ambitions.

What was Sushmita Sen thinking when she decided to work in this tableau of titillating possibilities on man-woman relationships all gone to utter and irrevocable waste? Karma Aur Holi with huge dollops of confession thrown in with the...

Suchitra's recent recall
In the recent film Rann there was a large role played by a girl in a short bob cut who played Amitabh Bachchan.s C.O.O. She had a much larger role than any of the other girls in the film. Including the assorted heroines. It is those who persevered to see the cast at the end of the film released the girl was none other than Suchitra Krishnamurthy, the ex-wife of Shekhar Kapur. She played the role of Nalini Kashyapwith style and panache which none of our younger heroine could match. Shekhar kapur.s loss was a gain for Rann. Even though the film did not do well, film-makers have noticed her talent. And we believe special roles are busy written for her. Way to go Suchitra.
