George Clooney’s Broadway Adaptation of ‘Good Night and Good Luck’ to Air Live on CNN
Image
George Clooney is headed back to television…just not the way you think.

Unlike former co-star Noah Wyle’s return to the medical procedural genre with “The Pitt,” Clooney will be taking to the small screen via The Great White Way. For the last few months, he’s been performing at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre in a theatrical adaptation of his 2005 Oscar-nominated biopic “Good Night and Good Luck.” Now he’ll bring that story back to the place it first started: on television.

Airing Saturday, June 7 on CNN, CNN will air a live performance of “Good Night and Good Luck” in what will be the Broadway show’s penultimate performance. It’s also the first time in Broadway history a play has been televised live.

As per The New York Times, the play will be preceded and followed by coverage and discussion around the show, it’s history, and the current state of journalism.

Isolated cabins, eerie woods, and way too many sharp objects — need we say more?

I watched the horror-comedy “Hell of a Summer” this weekend, and it got me thinking about why summer camps keep popping up as the perfect horror setting. There’s something nostalgic — and deeply unsettling — about being isolated in the woods, far from help. Plus, horror loves its simple setups: one location, one killer, and plenty of unsuspecting victims. So, here’s my top seven horror movies set at summer camp, guaranteed to make you think twice about that lakeside getaway.

‘Good Night, And Good Luck’ Review: George Clooney Makes Broadway Debut Battling Alternative Facts Through The Decades
Image
There are moments in Good Night, and Good Luck, the new play by George Clooney and Grant Heslov opening on Broadway tonight at the Winter Garden Theatre and starring Clooney as pioneering TV journalist Edward R. Murrow, when the anti-authoritarian passions of all three men are made very clear. Anti-McCarthyism in Murrow’s case, anti-Trumpism for Clooney and, one presumes, Heslow. Unfortunately, more often than not, that clarity comes through speechifying, minor-key tirades and copious use of ’50s-era TV clips that make plain the all-too-obvious parallels between then and now.

We know when, in history and in the play, the inevitable “Have you no sense of decency?” will arrive to put Senator Joseph McCarthy out of America’s misery. When, the play not so subtly wonders, will Donald Trump face the same path?

Making clear-as-day the similarities between those long ago days of McCarthyite propaganda and today’s Trumpian “alternative facts,...

The Bait: “That’s a Thousand Hours of My Life You Just Saw”

If TV writing isn’t a job anymore, then TV magicians must be totally screwed, huh? In the 1978 psychological horror classic “Magic,” Anthony Hopkins — aka everyone’s favorite cannibal psychiatrist — trades in his red-headed FBI agent from “Silence of the...

Chris Hemsworth's 'The Cabin in the Woods' Is Streaming Free on Tubi
Image
A comedy, a bloodbath, and social commentary all at once, Cabin in the Woods was the directorial debut of well-known sci-fi writer Drew Goddard. It was the first collaboration between Goddard and actor Chris Hemsworth (a relationship which would later be expounded upon in 2018's Bad Times at the El Royale). Cabin in the Woods also marks one of many repeated collaborations between Goddard and Joss Whedon.

Goddard and Whedon previously worked together on the beloved TV classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Having established a mutual love for horror and the slasher genre, Goddard and Whedon reportedly wrote the script for Cabin in the Woods together in just three days. Also starring comedic powerhouses like Bradley Whitford and Academy-Award nominee Richard Jenkins, Cabin in the Woodsplays with the conventions of horror filmmakingthrough a non-stop, silly, gruesome romp.

A Marvel Star’s Singular Dip Into Horror Has Haunted Its Way Onto a Free Streamer
Image
To so many of us, Chris Hemsworth’s main mark on the entertainment industry is through action films. The beefy Australian will forever be synonymous with his role as Thor aka The God of Thunder in his own lineup of Marvel films as well as a handful of The Avengers flicks. He’s also busted skulls in the Extraction franchise and blasted away otherworldly threats in Men in Black: International, but there’s only been one time that the actor dipped into the world of horror. Back in 2011, Hemsworth joined forces with an ensemble cast that also included Kristen Connolly (House of Cards), Fran Kranz (Dollhouse), Anna Hutchison (Vengeance: A Love Story), Bradley Whitford (The West Wing), Jesse Williams (Grey’s Anatomy) and Richard Jenkins (Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story) for The Cabin in the Woods. Right now, audiences in for a laugh, jump scare, and a freaky creature feature can...

10 Horror Movie Heroes Who Were Secretly The Villains
Image
Horror movies quite commonly offer cautionary tales, from Frankenstein's monster, to families moving into haunted houses despite warnings. Horror movies based on folklore, for example, have premises that carry timeless moral messages. The protagonists' strengths of character are tested in these films, and they sometimes even end in tragedy, on their way to establishing the importance of being conscientious. This is why horror movie villains sometimes seem to be in the right, like in Carrie, where even though the titular character ends up killing many people, her prior mistreatment at the hands of the deceased makes her actions feel justified.

Horror films reflect the anxieties of any given era. That's why there have been so many horror movies about artificial intelligence in recent times. The horror in the more meaningful films are the manifestations of human error, and the consequences of wrongdoing. The best horror movies come with life lessons,...

Jake Kasdan, and the story of his disappearing 2006 film
Sigourney Weaver
Sigourney Weaver and David Duchovny’s star power wasn’t enough to stop one of Jake Kasdan’s movies all but disappearing for a while.

This weekend, director Jake Kasdan’s new film, the megabudget festive flick Red One, is in cinemas. He’s also linked with directing a Jumanji film for the third time, and also is one of the filmmakers announced as making a new Lego movie.

Across his career, he’s made Zero Effect, Orange County, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Bad Teacher, Sex Tape, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level. That’s just as a feature director, with a whole bunch of television stuff as well.

Yet in the midst of his run of films, he also brought Sigourney Weaver and David Duchovny in 2006, for a low budget independent film called The TV Set. If you’re in the UK in particular,...

Albert Serra’s Bullfighting Doc ‘Afternoons of Solitude’ Wins Golden Shell at San Sebastián, as Pamela Anderson and ‘The Last Showgirl’ Take Jury Prize
Image
Sometimes, in a closely contested festival competition, it pays to be the one thing that isn’t like the others. A starkly powerful, observational study of contemporary bullfighting, Spanish auteur Albert Serra’s “Afternoons of Solitude” was the only documentary in the main competition at this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival — and this evening won the Golden Shell for best film of the festival, beating some big-name narrative competition.

The award was presented by last year’s Golden Shell winner, Spanish filmmaker Jaione Camborda, heading a jury that also included directors Ulrich Seidl, Christos Nikou and Fran Kranz, producer Carole Scotta and Argentine journalist Leila Guerriero.

Centred on star Peruvian matador Andrés Rey Roca, “Afternoons of Solitude” is candid in its depiction of the violence of the sport, and has already proven controversial on home turf, with Spain’s animal-rights party Pacma calling for the film to be withdrawn from the festival.

Cabin in the Woods Is Full of Horror Easter Eggs and References
Image
Drew Goddard's 2012 horror-comedy classic, The Cabin in the Woods, is stacked with references and Easter eggs to some of the best horror media out there. Releasing at a time when the horror genre seemed to burn out, with its golden years behind them, The Cabin in the Woods aimed to revitalize the genre. To many, they had succeeded, creating a horror film which was different from those which came before it.

The Cabin in the Woods follows a group of college students vacationing in a remote cabin, you guessed it, in the woods. Here, a variety of monsters prey on the students, under the control of technicians who are masterminding the events from a secret, underground facility. The film acts as both a critique of some parts of the horror genre, whilst simultaneously paying homage to others. The references range massively, from Sam Raimi's Evil Dead to more obscure classics,...

San Sebastian Head José Luis Rebordinos Talks ‘Emmanuelle’, Johnny Depp & Avoiding Competition With Other Fall Festivals

José Luis Rebordinos, director of the San Sebastian Film Festival, has just over a week until opening night when he sits down for an interview with Deadline, and he is still plagued by one niggling organizational issue.

“It’s always so difficult to close the jury,” Rebordinos explains as he rushes out of the room to take a call about his potential jury head.

When he returns, he explains: “A few weeks ago I was speaking with Thierry Fremaux. He said even for him it’s always a problem because jury members have to be at your festival for 10 days, you don’t pay, and it’s complicated because people are often working and when they aren’t, they want to spend time with their families and friends.”

A few days later, the competition jury is finally confirmed, with Spanish filmmaker Jaione Camborda leading alongside Leila Guerriero, Fran Kranz, Christos Nikou,...

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best Comedy Supporting Actor
Image
Getting ready to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Comedy Supporting Actor? Be sure to take a tour of our photo gallery that showcases the leading contenders. Reigning victor Ebon Moss-Bachrach (“The Bear”) is generally expected to retain his crown and thus become the 18th man to clinch this particular award more than once and the 13th to do so twice consecutively.

Whereas Moss-Bachrach was his program’s sole featured male nominee last year, he could very likely be joined in the upcoming lineup by three of his cast mates: Lionel Boyce, Matty Matheson, and Oliver Platt. All of said actors have never been recognized in this category before, but Platt has five outside notices under his belt, including a 2023 guest one for “The Bear.”

Of the six actors Moss-Bachrach defeated last year, only one – Tyler James Williams (“Abbott Elementary”) – is eligible for a repeat bid (which would be his...

Max Cancels Another Comedy Following Our Flag Means Death

Sarah Lancashire plays the titular role in the series created by Daniel Goldfarb, with a cast that includes Bebe Neuwirth, Fran Kranz, Fiona Glascott, Brittany Bradford, Judith Light, Rachel Bloom, Isabella Rossellini, and James Cromwell, among others.

Max is turning off the heat on Julia.

The Warner Bros. Discovery-backed streamer has canceled its Julia Child-inspired series Julia following a two-season run. Julia: Book Editor Judith Jones Deserves a Spin-Off
Image
Max’s Julia Child biodrama is blessed with a deep bench of winning characters played by incredible actors. Aside from Julia (Sarah Lancashire) and her husband Paul (David Hyde-Pierce), there's Julia's best pal Avis (Bebe Neuwirth), the public-television producer who helped shepherd her show to the air (Brittany Bradford as Alice), her original French Chef director Russ (Fran Kranz), her new director Elaine (Rachel Bloom); the list goes on. But a special place at the table should be set for Julia's Judith Jones (Fiona Glascott), the book editor at the Knopf publishing house and the French Chef’s first great champion. She's a character so dynamic, self-possessed, and charismatic, that there seems only one thing left for her to do: leave Julia for a spin-off of her own.
