Sebastian Maniscalco’s ‘Bookie’ Is a Good Reminder of Why the Antihero Era Ended
Image
Doing business with a man who made billions on child labor and may have murdered a past associate. Jokes about children being sexually abused in the foster system. Extreme and public intimate partner violence played for laughs because both partners are men. Though you might think plotlines like these went extinct circa Entourage and Sons of Anarchy, Bookie is doing its best to revive the antihero era. Sometimes it feels like a charmingly retro throwback; mostly it’s so sweaty and off-putting that it reminds you why they don’t make TV like this anymore.

Bookie, which premiered on Max late last November, was co-created by superstar EP Chuck Lorre and his frequent collaborator Nick Bakay, and wildly successful stand-up comic Sebastian Maniscalco stars as Danny, the titular bookie. Though some lip service is paid to the fact of legalized sports betting and how it could affect Danny’s business,...

"Let’s Start The Revolution!": Wyatt Russell Dreams For Lodge 49 Season 3 After AMC Cancelation
Image
Wyatt Russell expresses his desire for a Lodge 49 season 3, stating that it doesn't feel like the show is over for him. Russell believes that Lodge 49 is the most special thing he's ever done and that there is something magical about his character, Dud. Despite the show's cancelation after two seasons, Russell would drop everything and continue working on Lodge 49 if given the opportunity, as it holds a special place in his heart.

Wyatt Russell expresses his thoughts on a possible Lodge 49 season 3 years after AMC's cancelation. Created by Jim Gavin and starring actors like Brent Jennings, Sonya Cassidy, David Pasquesi, Eric Allan Kramer, and Russell, the series centers on Russell's Dud, who joins a fraternity following his father's death and the failure of their family business. The show, which garnered a sizable following and critical acclaim, ran from August 2018 to October 2019 before AMC decided to...

Good Luck Charlie’s Titular Tyke Is All Grown Up in Surprise TV Family Reunion — Watch
Image
Good Luck Charlie‘s titular rugrat revealed herself to be all grown up — because that is how aging works, after all — in a delightful surprise reunion with her TV dad.

Airing for four seasons from April 2010 to February 2014 (and a favorite of the Mitovich twins), Disney Channel’s Good Luck Charlie in large part revolved around Teddy (played by Bridgit Mendler), the second-oldest child in the Duncan clan. Worried that she will be at college and not around much when her toddler sister grows up, Teddy recorded video diaries for Charlie, ending each imparting of wisdom with [see title of TV series].

10 Marvel Characters That Debuted In Live-Action Way Earlier Than You Think
Image
Marvel characters were depicted in live-action media long before the MCU, contributing to the genre's early days and setting the foundation for today's superhero movies. Some early live-action debuts may not measure up to the MCU, but they played a significant role in turning Marvel's iconic comic book heroes into household names. Some of these early live-action debuts may be outdated by today's standards, but they still deserve recognition for their pioneering efforts.

The MCU may have revolutionized the Superhero genre in TV and cinema, but plenty of Marvel characters were depicted in live-action media way earlier than you might think. In fact, some of Earth's Mightiest Heroes were present on-screen even around the same time as the first-ever comic books. It may have taken 80 years to perfect the formula, but superhero movies and TV shows were a large part of mid-20th-century entertainment - even if noticeably less prolific.

‘Alarmed’ Review (Tubi)
Image
Stars: Brittany Baker, Pooch Hall, Chris Whitcomb, Eric Lutes, David Gere, Brendan Kelleher, Salvatore DelGreco, Angie Campbell, Eric Allan Kramer | Written and Directed by Matthew Kohnen

Alarmed is the latest original film from the streaming service Tubi. Regular readers may have noticed it’s been a while since I’ve reviewed one of those, and there’s a simple reason for that. Apart from Terror Train, which went to a different service here, they haven’t done anything that caught my attention lately. This sounded like it could be a decent home invasion thriller so I gave it a look.

Janet and Sean are having marital issues. The fact their son Billy got busted for hacking some government networks and is back living with them 24/7 while he serves a sentence under house arrest isn’t helping matters.

They decide they need some time to themselves and plan a weekend getaway.

John Goodman, Roseanne Barr, Sara Gilbert, Michael Fishman, Alicia Goranson, and Laurie Metcalf in Roseanne (1988)
William H. Macy Joins ‘The Conners’ – and Brings With Him a Tie to the ‘Roseanne’ Years (Exclusive Video)
John Goodman, Roseanne Barr, Sara Gilbert, Michael Fishman, Alicia Goranson, and Laurie Metcalf in Roseanne (1988)
The “Roseanne” years may be gone but, judging by Wednesday night’s episode of “The Conners,” they are not forgotten, as guest star William H. Macy shows up in Lanford as Smitty Cusamano, Rosie’s ex-boyfriend — and Jackie’s former high school crush.

In the exclusive clip above, Dan is pleasantly surprised when Smitty – who left town decades earlier and “made a killing” in the pool supply business — shows up at his door, having arrived to attend a mutual friend’s funeral. “Why hang out with us regular folks after you made it big?” Dan jokes.

“’Cause showing the regular folk how you made it big is the whole point of making it big,” he answers. “Money doesn’t bring you happiness, Dan. But it makes other people feel bad about themselves, and that makes you happy.”

The Conners Season 5’s Returning Roseanne Character Isn’t Who You Think
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Conners season 5, episode 11.

While The Conners season 5 promised a cameo from a returning Roseanne cast member, few viewers could have guessed who the creators of the sitcom spinoff would end up bringing back. Like most long-running sitcoms, Roseanne had a whole host of guest stars over the years. These ranged from future superstars like George Clooney (who played Jackie’s flirtatious boss Booker) to television veterans like Martin Mull (who played the Lunchbox manager Leon). As such, when the producers of The Conners announced that a Roseanne character would return in season 5 of the spinoff, viewers struggled to guess who the mystery cast member would be.

In a surprising twist, the returning star is a character who only appeared in one episode of Roseanne and played a relatively minor role. Although The Conners kept two major Roseanne character deaths offscreen, season 5 of the series saw fit to bring back Bobo,...

The Conners Brings Back A Forgotten Roseanne Season 1 Character
Image
The Conners brings back a forgotten Roseanne season 1 character who only encountered Dan and Roseanne once during a special occasion at the Lobo Lounge. ABC is seemingly pulling all the stops to evoke nostalgia on The Conners season 5. Aside from Jackie having to deal with the tragic circumstances of Beverly's deteriorating health, the series is also bringing back the Lobo Lounge, which was an important setting in the original series. Now, The Conners is further dealing with the history of the local hangout place as it revisits a specific moment from Roseanne season 1 that happened there.

With the iconic Roseanne location returning on The Conners, TV Line reports that ABC is bringing back a particular bully from the flagship sitcom — Eric Allan Kramer's Bobo. For context, Bobo only appeared in the Roseanne season 1 episode "Dan's Birthday Bash." While Dan and Roseanne celebrated his birthday, he encountered the bully Bobo,...

The Door: La porte du passé (2009)
‘Lodge 49’: The Last Image of Season 2 Proves This Show Has Plenty More Worlds Left to Explore
The Door: La porte du passé (2009)
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for the “Lodge 49” Season 2 finale, Episode 10, “The Door.”]

If “Lodge 49” is a family — and it certainly is — the last episode of Season 2 feels like a grand reunion. After the chaos of the show’s wild Mexico diversion in the previous two episodes, Long Beach’s beloved Lynxes gather at Lodge 49 for the coronation of Ernie (Brent Jennings) as Sovereign Protector. He and Scott (Eric Allan Kramer) bury the hatchet as they both realize they want different things from life. Connie (Linda Emond) forges the beginning of a literary career and Liz (Sonya Cassidy) even takes her first steps inside Lodge confines.

Leading up to the finale, Season 2 is filled with moments that emphasize how much these disparate characters have become united by circumstance. The beginning of a communal van ride, a collective thanksgiving around a table at a restaurant known for its dumplings, one wild escape to secure the scrolls that have been the seasons-long...

Wyatt Russell
‘Lodge 49’ Review: One of TV’s Strongest Ensembles Continues to Embrace the Mystery in Season 2
Wyatt Russell
Here’s a pitch for “Lodge 49”: “Dud” Dudley is about as close to a real-life Paddington Bear as Peak TV is going to get. The merry rover of Long Beach, he’s an idealistic character taken with the possibilities of adventure who, even though prone to errors and mistakes, brings some magical sense of wonder into the lives of everyone he comes across.

But even with Wyatt Russell’s charming, cash-strapped hero as the ongoing inciting force binding new family and old together, AMC’s undersung series has been quietly amassing one of the most compelling collections of characters anywhere in the TV landscape. Not content with making a universe that revolves around one figure trying to piece together the answers to some of life’s biggest questions, “Lodge 49” has grown into a country-hopping, plane-transcending hangout with individuals of boundless depth.

Everyone in “Lodge 49” is searching for some sense of belonging.

‘Lodge 49’ Season 2 Review: And Now Our Moment of Zen
“Dreams are important, right?” Sean “Dud” Dudley asks midway through the second season of AMC’s Lodge 49. This isn’t just a metaphorical discussion for Dud (Wyatt Russell), a shaggy former pool cleaner whose optimism never flags even though he’s technically homeless and barely survived a shark attack at the end of Season One. No, Dud’s best friend Ernie Fontaine (Brent Jennings) has recently told him about a man who paints images from his own prophetic dreams, then watches the paintings come true. So dreams are both important...

Lodge 49 Season 2 is The Working Man's Game of Thrones
Alec Bojalad Aug 11, 2019

We head behind the scenes of Lodge 49 season 2 to learn about dragons, trolls, and the search for scrolls.

“Don’t ask me about the Mariachi costume,” Lodge 49 star Brent Jennings says as he settles into one of the ancient wooden seats in Atlanta’s haunted Fox Theatre. Sure enough, he is wearing a full-on black and red Mariachi suit.

It’s the day after Game of Thrones season 8’s massive Battle of Winterfell episode, “The Long Night” and Jennings and his costars are filming the ninth and penultimate episode of a show that at first glance seems to be on the opposite end of the pop cultural spectrum of the swords, shields, and dragons mega hit.

Lodge 49 wandered onto the television scene last August as a fully formed and tonally confident Monday night follow up to AMC’s other fully formed tonally confident drama, Better Call Saul.

‘Lodge 49’ Season 2 Trailer: No One Knows What That Door Is Doing There (Video)
We don’t know what “Lodge 49” is about either, but perhaps we can learn together by watching the Season 2 trailer, which AMC released on Thursday.

Ok, we just watched it and we still don’t know what “Lodge 49” is about. Fortunately, AMC has some idea — we think — perhaps the cable channel’s official Season 2 description will enlighten us.

Season 2 of this modern fable set in Long Beach, Calif. centers on likable “Squire” and ex-surfer Sean “Dud” Dudley (Wyatt Russell), whose beloved fraternal order — the Ancient and Benevolent Order of the Lynx — is suffering under new rule by an ill-suited leader. Despite his “Knight” and mentor Ernie’s (Brent Jennings) lost faith, and his twin sister Liz’s (Sonya Cassidy) struggle with their past, Dud believes he is the key to restoring the Lodge to its former grandeur and putting the rightful king on the throne.

Nope. No, that didn’t do it either.

‘Lodge 49’ Season 2 Trailer: Welcome Back to the Magical Land of Long Beach
Linda Emond, Brent Jennings, Eric Allan Kramer, David Pasquesi, Wyatt Russell, and Sonya Cassidy in Lodge 49 (2018)
It’s hard to find a show like “Lodge 49” anywhere else on TV. Part family drama, part metaphysical journey through distant reaches of Southern California, part bureaucracy-based mystery, the AMC show is unapologetically its own.

So, with Season 2 on the horizon next month, it’s no surprise that it looks like the show is continuing to clear its own singular path. Wyatt Russell reprises his role as Dud, a wayward young guy looking for healing in more ways than one. With the help of his sister Liz (Sonya Cassidy), he manages to stay afloat and out of trouble, even while trying to preserve his late father’s legacy.

Of course, the show wouldn’t be complete without more time spent in the building/organization/mystical haven that gives the show its name. Season 2 arrives with more chances to see the daily exploits of Lodge members Ernie (Brent Jennings), Blaise...

Lodge 49 Season 2 Release Date, Trailer, Cast, Story, News, and More
Alec Bojalad Jul 11, 2019

AMC is picking up its intriguing and successful Better Call Saul time slot companion, Lodge 49, for Season 2.

Lodge 49 Season 2 was not inevitable.

Despite having a solid Better Call Saul lead-in, Lodge 49 was a real risky proposition for AMC. The first season of the show was about as experimental as TV show offerings can get. It came from longtime fiction writer yet TV novice, Jim Gavin. It starred relative unknowns Wyatt Russell and Brent Jennings.

It was a quirky, light-hearted comedy, but also danced around the edges of some real mystical stuff. Today, however, that initial risk pays off for AMC as the network has announced that it was renewed Lodge 49 for Season 2.

Lodge 49 Season 2 Release Date

We have an official release date for Lodge 49 Season 2! The show will return to AMC on Monday, August 12 at 10:00 p.m. Et, following the premiere of The Terror Season 2. Mark your calendars.

‘Lodge 49’ Renewed for Season 2 at AMC
“Lodge 49” has been renewed for a second season at AMC ahead of its Season 1 finale.

The series is described as modern fable set in Long Beach, California about a disarmingly optimistic local ex-surfer, Dud (Wyatt Russell), who’s drifting after the death of his father and collapse of the family business.

In the first season, Dud found himself on the doorstep of a rundown fraternal lodge, where a middle-aged plumbing salesman and “Luminous Knight” of the order welcomes him into a world of domestic beer, easy camaraderie and the promise of Alchemical mysteries that may or may not put Dud on the path to recover the idyllic life he’s lost.

In addition to Russell, Jennings, and Cassidy, the series also stars Linda Emond, David Pasquesi, Eric Allan Kramer, Avis-Marie Barnes, Njema Williams, and Jimmy Gonzales.

Series creator, writer and executive producer Jim Gavin will return for Season 2 along with showrunner Peter Ocko.

‘Pitching Tents’ Review
Stars: Booboo Stewart, Jonathan Lipnicki, Richard Riehle, Jim Norton, Michael Grant, Eric Allan Kramer | Written by Rob A. Fox, Jayme Petrille | Directed by Jacob Cooney

If you have ever taken the time to listen to our podcast you will have figured out that I am a big fan of Kevin Smith, John Hughes, Cameron Crowe-style, dialogue heavy story driven movies. Throw one of those coming of age end of summer type movies and I’ll eat them up like a bowl of Shreddies (other cereals are available I just happen to be eating a bowl as I write this).

Pitching Tents is exactly this type of movie. Its 1984 its the end of the school year and Danny (Micheal Grant) has very little clue what he is going to do with his life past high school. Before he has to really worry about any of that he is having one...

"The Incredible Hulk" vs "The Mighty Thor"
Sneak Peek Marvel's first live-action 'Thor' in the 1988 TV movie, "The Incredible Hulk Returns", written by Stan Lee and Nicholas Corea, produced by New World and distributed by NBC as a 'backdoor pilot' for a potential "Thor" television series:

Thor's appearance differed from the Marvel Comics character created by Lee and co-plotter/illustrator Jack Kirby, resembling a more realistic and divine version of the 'Norse God of Thunder' but following the comic book in that he is sent to earth to learn humility, the first and only time that magical, supernatural or otherworldly elements have been used in the universe of the "Incredible Hulk" TV series.

'Thor' was played by Eric Allan Kramer and 'Dr. Donald Blake' by Steve Levitt. In this version Blake does not become Thor, who is a separate character. By holding Thor's hammer 'Mjolnir' and shouting "Odin!" Blake can summon the Viking Warrior to help him.
