Steve Pepoon, Writer on ‘The Simpsons,’ ‘The Wild Thornberrys’ and ‘Alf,’ Dies at 68
Image
Steve Pepoon, who received an Emmy for writing an episode of The Simpsons as a freelancer, worked on other TV comedies like It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, Alf and Roseanne and co-created The Wild Thornberrys, has died. He was 68.

Pepoon has been in treatment for a heart condition called cardiac amyloidosis for the past two years and died unexpectedly May 3 outside his home in Paola, Kansas, his wife, Mary Stephenson, told The Hollywood Reporter.

After moving from his native Kansas to Los Angeles in 1979, Pepoon in late 1985 finally sold his first script, which became an episode of Silver Spoons that aired in January 1986. Fifteen months later, he was hired as a staff writer on Alf, another NBC comedy, and wrote for its final three seasons through 1990.

He kept writing on spec, and one script he did for Fox’s The Simpsons, “Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment,” won him his Emmy,...

How an Iconic Nickelodeon Villain Tormented Its Showrunners
Image
Nickelodeon probably didn’t expect its 1991 toddler-centric adventure show to become a cultural touchstone. Yet, Rugratshas done just that. The now-classic Klasky-Csupo cartoon instant crawled into people’s hearts and earned itself plenty of accolades. It also has the prestigious distinction of being one of Nickelodeon’s three debut Nicktoons.

Its network reign spanned thirteen years, stretching from 1991 to 2004. During that time, Rugrats’ animators and production crew created an astounding 172 episodes (or 327 segments) across nine seasons. Its original run also spanned three feature films and the tween-focused All Grown Up spin-off. More recently, it also received a CGI-animated reboot series. However, no masterpiece is without its quirks. Despite the show’s iconic cast, beloved characters, and widely praised storylines, the first few seasons were plagued by a persistent problem: Angelica Pickles.

Rugrats and Angelica Pickles Gabor Csupo, Arlene Klasky, and Paul Germain began planning Rugrats in 1989. Rugrats’ unique style was...

These Iconic Nickelodeon Shows Are Getting Major Box Set Releases

If you group up in the 90s and early 2000s, you most likely had Nickelodeon in your weekly programming rotation. Two of the most popular animated series during that time were Rocket Power and Rugrats. Paramount and Nickelodeon recently put the latter's three feature films on Blu-ray, but the main series ran for 172 episodes. That's all the while Rocket Power skated its way to 71 episodes. Now, if you're looking to relive your childhood, both the nostalgic Arlene Klasky and Gábor Csupó-created series are getting massive box sets.

15 Underrated Nickelodeon Shows That Are Perfect From Start to Finish
Image
When Nickelodeon first officially launched in 1979, it was considered to be a pioneer in its field. As the first cable network aimed at children, the channel was keen to remain true to its aims and even remained ad-free until 1984. Thus, it's fair to say that the long future of children's programming began at Nickelodeon.

The network is best recognized for its array of stylized and imaginative cartoons, such as SpongeBob SquarePants and Hey Arnold! But because of its status in the industry, a lot of viewers tend to overlook its more experimental and niche programs. As a result, Nickelodeon has become a hub of underrated programs, many of which are desperate to be discovered by die-hard fans.

I'm Scared To See Rugrats' "Live-Action" CGI Toddlers
Image
Rugrats is returning to film with a new movie, though with live-action mixed with CGI to bring the toddlers to life and thats exactly what Im scared to see in this movie. Back in 1991, Nickelodeon presented the animated TV series Rugrats, created by Arlene Klasky, Gbor Csup, and Paul Germain. Rugrats was the second show in the group of original Nicktoons, right after Doug and before The Ren & Stimpy Show. Rugrats followed a group of toddlers led by one-year-old Tommy Pickles as they turned their day-to-day lives into extraordinary adventures.

Rugrats was a hit with critics and general audiences, and its success led to a media franchise with a sequel series, a spinoff show, comic books, and a lot more. In 1998, Rugrats made the jump to the big screen with The Rugrats Movie, in which Tommys baby brother, Dil, was introduced. Two years later, the toddlers returned in Rugrats in Paris: The Movie,...

Rugrats Live-Action-Ish CGI Movie in Development at Paramount
Image
Is nothing sacred anymore? Must Hollywood continue to transform our childhood memories into unholy cinematic nightmares? It would appear so, as the beloved 90s cartoon Rugrats is all set to be put through the godless machine that turns animation into a live-action hybrid (via Deadline). Though perhaps we should calm down and think of the good live-action hybrid movies that are out there...because there are definitely some.

Though it does make one wonder what elements of the Rugrats will be CGI and what will be live-action? Regardless of the strive for positivity, its near-impossible not to imagine the terrifying computer-generated versions of Tommy Pickles and the gang that Hollywood might concoct. Anyone remember the original version of Sonic?

Now for the details, as the Rugrats live-action CGI hybrid movie is all set to be directed by Jason Moore, who is best known for the likes of the first Pitch Perfect movie,...

The beloved 1990s animated series from Nickelodeon is getting the live-action treatment from Paramount, with “Pitch Perfect” director Jason Moore on board to direct the new project. He’ll be working from a script by “Saturday Night Live” regular Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell. Paramount is describing the feature as a “a live-action CG hybrid,” based on the original series created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó, and Paul Germain. Karen Rosenfelt is producing, as are Klasky and Csupó.

So yes, the babies will be CGI.

The original animated series followed a group of toddlers as they went on adventures, escaped into their own imaginations and struggled to understand the adult world. It was defined by its sharp writing, iconic theme music (from Devo member Mark Mothersbaugh) and unique, very ‘90s postmodern design aesthetic, pioneered by animation studio Klasky Csupo.

There were three theatrical animated “Rugrats” movies...

The Best '90s Cartoon Characters Everyone Forgot About
Image
Darwin from The Wild Thornberrys is an endearing animal companion with human-like habits and helps Eliza in daring adventures. SpongeBob SquarePants may have side characters like Granny that add humor and snarkiness, but are often overlooked and underrated. Unexpected allies like Charlie the Mouse in Courage the Cowardly Dog often play crucial roles in assisting the main characters but don't get enough attention.

The '90s was a revolutionary time for cartoons, changing the way audiences viewed animated series. Popular shows such as SpongeBob SquarePants and Rugrats are still beloved by old and new audiences today. There are many aspects that made these shows icons, from the amazing animation to the funny, intriguing, or thought-provoking plots. Arguably, the best part of these shows is the lovable and entertaining characters.

A brand-new Rugrats video game is coming soon, but some players can already check out a free demo. 6 Debunked TV Show Fan Theories We Wish Were True
Image
Fan theories about television shows often don't come true or get debunked, leaving viewers disappointed. The popular theory that the Rugrats babies are all in Angelica's imagination was proven false by the show's creator. The Office fans believe Toby is the Scranton Strangler, but the evidence for this theory can be debunked.

As much as fan theories can blow audiences away with their logic and creativity, oftentimes, they never come to fruition, or worse, they get debunked by the people who inspired them, leaving viewers with a whole list of fan theories that they really wish had never been proven wrong. To be specific, these are theories that were created by fans about what will happen or did happen on a television show, but that were ultimately debunked by a member of the show's cast or crew. The following theories are some of the most convincing or likable television fan...

All the Important Things We Learned from Rugrats
Image
Before SpongeBob SquarePants and The Fairly OddParents, there was Rugrats.

Alongside fellow “Nicktoons” Doug and The Ren & Stimpy Show, Rugrats premiered Aug. 11, 1991 on Nickelodeon and helped establish an animated storytelling dynasty on the cable network. Created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó, and Paul Germain, the show was by far the most successful of Nickelodeon’s early offerings and helped set the stage for the Patrick Stars and Timmy Turners to come.

The cartoon followed the daily lives of toddlers Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, and twins Phil and Lil DeVille as they attempted to make sense of the adult world while also indulging in their imaginations for some larger-than-life adventures. Though the children’s parents also featured as secondary characters, Tommy and friends could only communicate with one another in their own unique baby language.

For an audience of a certain age (a.k.a. the geezer writing this), Rugrats...

New Technology, New Generation of Viewers Inform ‘Rugrats’ Animation Style
Image
When “Rugrats” went off the air after a decade in 2006, it did so with a handful of Daytime Emmy wins for animated program, a half-a-dozen Kids Choice Awards and its very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It also happened to be the second-longest running animated series on Nickelodeon (“SpongeBob SquarePants” being the longest), it spawned three movies, and the franchise’s licensing and merchandising potential seemed endless.

In other words, reviving the comedic adventures of the animated tots was a no-brainer for Nick, which has already dusted off “SpongeBob” from the shelf and is emerging as one of the biggest subscription drivers to the newly launched Paramount Plus.

When Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil and Angelica return to screens, however, they’ll have a whole new look thanks to the CG-animation style. In reimagining “Rugrats” for new and grown-up audiences alike, executive producers Eryk Casemiro and Kate Boutilier...

Nickelodeon cartoons “Dora the Explorer” and “The Fairly OddParents” are getting live-action series on Paramount+.

“Dora” will target kids aged 6-11 and their families, Nick said. That film, which starred Isabela Merced in the titular role, made about $120 million worldwide on a budget of $49 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

“The Fairly OddParents,” meanwhile, is one of Nick’s longest-running and most successful animated series.

The announcement was among the deluge of news shared on Wednesday during ViacomCBS’ streaming investor day. Brian Robbins, the president of kids and family entertainment at ViacomCBS, had the honor of sharing this one.

In addition to these live-action shows, Nickelodeon properties “Rugrats” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender” are also getting new versions for Paramount+, which launches on March...

Emily S. Whitten: Nickelodeon and Nostalgia @ Sdcc 2016
As you undoubtedly know, San Diego’s Comic-Con International happened this past weekend, and I was fortunate to be amongst the tens of thousands of attendees. There was, as always, a mega-ton to see and do, and it was hard to keep the Fomo (Fear Of Missing Out) from getting completely out of control over the 4.5 days of the con. To stay sane, though, at some point you just have to accept that you’re going to miss a bunch, and focus on what you do have the opportunity to see.

This year, one of my main interests was what Nickelodeon was showcasing. Of course, Nickelodeon is always on my radar, and particularly the current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, which I adore. But even beyond the coolness that is the Tmnt, this year, Nickelodeon was focusing on its past – in the best way possible. Through its late-night programming block of “The Splat,...

Here's What the 'Rugrats' Look Like All Grown Up
Nancy Cartwright, Christine Cavanaugh, Tara Strong, Cheryl Chase, Elizabeth Daily, Dionne Quan, Kath Soucie, and Cree Summer in Les Razmoket (1991)
90s nostalgia is at an all-time high, and Rugrats is more popular than ever. In fact, episodes are still in so much demand, that Nickelodeon launched a new programming block partially devoted to the disturbing babies back in October called The Splat. Ever since its debut in 1991, fans have wondered what the Rugrats would look like grown up. Now, we finally have the definitive answer, as former storyboard artist for the show, Eric Molinsky, shares what might as well be an official depiction of this ragtag group.

His painting captures Chuckie, Tommy, Phil and Lil as twenty somethings. And perhaps it is a little disturbing, but nonetheless, right on the money. Eric Molinsky thinks that some of the previous fan art bringing these characters into adulthood was a little too perfect. And he claims that everyone has missed the point.

The big problem with the fan art is that it...

Paula Manzanedo-Schmitt is VP of Film Finances Inc. the world leader in completion guarantees. She has been involved in more than 1,000 films and TV programs internationally and in U.S. She spoke of the various cross-cultural requisites in film production abroad.

The discussion centered around whether filmmakers could make a film without the notorioius interference of studios (they should all be so lucky as to have this problem). In other words, the panelists discussed their experiences making films with Russians and Chinese. All agreed that working abroad, and especially with international sales agents who also produce allows for greater freedom of vision (although in China the reward is writng so that China censorship does not interfere because one has written to their specifications). All agreed also that there is a certain cross-cultural divide one must discover in order to work effectively.

My suggestions for finding a way to create without corporate interferences are listed below:

** Coproduce with Canada who has the most coproduction treaties in the world, or go directly to producers or sales agents who do not rely on treaties.

** Work with international sales agents who produce international coproductions which include U.S., or with the producers of those films who now have established track records.
