George A. Romero‘s first two Dead movies, Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, were quickly seen as horror classics. But the third film in his series, 1985’s Day of the Dead (watch it Here), had a tougher time gaining acceptance. Many fans saw it as a disappointment, the weak link. It took years for Day of the Dead to be re-evaluated and viewed as a classic. July 19th marked the 40th anniversary of the original release of this classic – and coinciding with the anniversary, Scream Factory announced (via Fangoria) that they will be giving Day of the Dead a 4K Uhd release! A release date has not yet been scheduled.
Written and directed by Romero, Day of the Dead has the following synopsis: The walking dead have taken over the world. Only a small band of scientists and solders are definitely known to remain, and...

Sad news made its way online over the weekend, as Lori Cardille, the star of writer/director George A. Romero’s 1985 zombie classic Day of the Dead, took to social media to confirm that her co-star Anthony Dileo Jr., known to his friends as Tim, passed away on Friday night. In Day of the Dead, Dileo played the character Miguel Salazar, who has a mental breakdown as the story plays out and, in the end, opens the gates to the underground bunker he and the other characters have been hiding out in, allowing the living dead to feast on fresh meat.
On Saturday, Cardille wrote, “It is with great sadness that I let you all know that my dear friend and colleague Anthony Dileo passed away last night from Covid. Tim was filled with love for nature, his beloved animals, family and friends and fans. He made me laugh every...

On the short list of post- classic-era comedies I can see over and over again is this beautifully executed Bill Murray crime comedy, which he co-directed. The fact that its basically silly main joke is whining about New York City doesn’t keep it from being hilarious from one end to the other. When it comes time for a getaway to the airport, Manhattan might as well be an impenetrable maze, an island of doom. Geena Davis and Randy Quaid give excellent comedy support, while Jason Robards holds up the police dragnet end of the story. The disc has no special extras but Murray’s movie is as satisfying as ever.

I really believe we should just celebrate George’s life and what he gave to the world. It’s very simple to me… he’s iconic. There were zombie movies made in the Thirties, White Zombie, but he’s the one that really took… Continue Reading →

When George A. Romero's Day of the Dead premiered on Friday, July 19, 1985, it was released in the same fashion that his Dawn of the Dead was distributed seven years earlier, which is to say without an MPAA rating. The poster sported the caveat (or allure, depending on your point of view): “Due to scenes of violence, which may be considered shocking, no one under 17 admitted.” Widely considered as an independent maverick in the film industry, Mr. Romero once again decided not to submit his film to the ratings board knowing full well that they would demand extensive cuts, leaving most of Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero’s best work on the cutting room floor. One of the major problems with releasing a film unrated is that the perception is that it is, in fact, a self-imposed X-rating. An “X” generally means death at the box office,...

As a longtime horror fan, one of the things I still look forward to the most is a good convention. There are all the celebrities, the different movies and panels you can find out more on, searching for cool horror merchandise and just hanging out with people who not only understand, but share my love of the genre.
When I heard that St. Louis was about to get its first genre convention at the end of April, I knew I had to find the man behind the curtain.
That man is Dave Dyer, and on April 30th through May 2nd, his brand new convention, Con-Tamination 2010, is set to take over the Gateway City. Con-Tamination 2010 will feature tons of great horror and sci-fi celebrities, films, activities, and more.
Dyer spoke to Dread Central about what motivated him to start the Con-Tamination convention and what he has in store for all the Midwestern fans.
