This article contains spoilers for the One Piece manga.
The hit animanga franchise One Piece boasts a truly vast cast of characters, who come in all shapes and sizes. Protagonist Monkey D. Luffy meets an incredible variety of people during his adventures on the high seas, from lovable rogues and ruffians to downright despicable criminals and bullies. Some villains redeemed themselves, such as Mr. 2 Bon Clay, and some are liked despite their villainy because they're cool, such as Crocodile and Kaido.
However, there are still plenty of One Piece characters who fans intensely dislike, and it's clear that author Eiichiro Oda never meant for those characters to be sympathetic or likable to begin with. The most disliked One Piece characters are often obnoxious villains or bullies who commit outrageous atrocities and have horrible personalities, or both.

Heroes cant just hog the spotlight all the time: the best anime also give villains their own time to shine! Many of the best episodes of anime are villain-focused, telling a story devoted to one or more villains with nary a protagonist to be seen. Even more fun are the occasions when an episode focuses on not just one villain, but an entire team of them, allowing fans to get a much better sense of the villains' dynamic and relationships to each other. Though it's not always done, well, when it is, the result can leave viewers with a lot more sympathy for the antagonists.
The tones of these episodes can be extremely broad. Some of them can be funny, showing a formerly intimidating villain kicking back and having fun in their free time. Others flesh out the characters under the spotlight in the heaviest way possible, perhaps showing a...

Monkey D. Luffy is the main protagonist of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece. His character arc began when he set out to sea with the aim of becoming the King of the Pirates. Having eaten the Gum-Gum Fruit, Luffy's battle prowess has grown tremendously and with more training, he's become one of the strongest characters in One Piece. At the same time, Luffy has proven that he's far from unbeatable.
In fact, there are actually many One Piece villains who beat Luffy once or even twice until the Straw Hat pirates eventually triumphed in the end. Furthermore, most One Piece story arcs involve at least one fight where Luffy either was forced to retreat or was outright defeated, and that adds suspense while also making the villain that much more impressive. Although Luffy has avenged his losses in several scenarios, there have also been characters that he would still have trouble fighting even now.
