Television's streaming era has shown a preference for established creators over new voices at almost every turn, and as the landscape continues to buffer the future, even fan-favorites are encountering bumps in the road. People in charge of these large studios and corporations trust an established name a lot more than a new hand, with few exceptions, and that can make the pool of shows and movies available feel a bit smaller than it did in the past. Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino were bound to get another chance to work with Prime Video after the success of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," and that chance came with "Étoile" on the popular streamer, until the company chose to end things after just one season.

“Étoile” is not the first television show Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino have made about the ballet world. That distinction belongs to “Bunheads,” the ABC Family dramedy that aired for one season more than a dozen years ago. Since “Bunheads” was a coming-of-age story about four aspiring ballerinas growing up in a small coastal town, the married, 10-time Emmy-winning creators consider “Étoile” their first true workplace comedy.
The Prime Video series, the pair’s first TV project since “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and was canceled June 6 after one season (after we spoke to them), follows two renowned ballet companies — one in Manhattan, the other in Paris — whose respective artistic directors, Jack McMillan (Luke Kirby) and Geneviève Lavigne (Charlotte Gainsbourg), agree to swap their best talent in a last-ditch effort to save their struggling institutions.

It’s been just under a week since Prime Video announced it was not moving forward with another season of Étoile, but fans of the show are not content to stand by on the sidelines while it perishes. A fan campaign dubbed #SaveÉtoile was put together shortly after the series was canned at Amazon, and it has garnered over 600 signatures in the last few days, as well as daily social actions like fan art, comment storms, and letters to Amazon. Étoile originally received a two-season order, which made its cancellation sting all the more. The show also developed a strong fan base upon the release of all Season 1 episodes at once on April 24, partially due to its glowing LGBTQ+ representation and love stories.

“Étoile” co-creator Amy Sherman-Palladino says her Prime Video ballet series taps into the struggle for art, declaring that art is “everything. Art is expression. Art is joy, and it’s part of the human experience.”
When it comes to “Étoile,” which immerses viewers in the ballet world, “the relatability of this is not just about art. It’s about just a dream and disappointment in life and wanting to be something that maybe you’re never going to be or maybe you are going to get there. And that sort of universal struggle of trying to figure out where you fit into the grand scheme of anything,” Sherman-Palladino said at a Q&a moderated by Vanity Fair’s Rebecca Ford.
She continued that everyone shares the same questions: “Do I matter? Does what I think matter? Does what I care about matter? It does matter. It matters so much. And...

Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino wear many hats (literally) on the sets of their TV shows — creators, writers, directors, executive producers. So over the course of their career, from Gilmore Girls to Étoile, they've built a family of trusted professionals around them to help them realize their creative vision, in front of and behind the camera.
In Gold Derby's exclusive four-part "Dream Team" conversation series, they open up about how they all work together. It all starts, of course, with their own partnership. Sherman-Palladino and Palladino, who've been married for years, say they've figured out how to divide and conquer the tremendous amount of responsibility that comes with showrunning. "It's pretty organic," says Sherman-Palladino. "Frankly, when you've been doing it this long, what you want is to be jealous of something that someone else has done. ... It keeps you on your toes."

Original shows have a hard time of making it work in the modern world, and we lost one of the better ones. Prime Video's Étoile was cancelled after just one season. Deadline reported that the Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino series was cancelled despite having a two-season order. According to the report, it was due to the show's performance vs. cost report and not a change of who is in charge of Amazon MGM Studios. Jennifer Salke had been the one to give the series a two-season order, and she left her position in March.
The cancellation is devastating for fans of the series. The Season 1 finale left fans with an open-ended question about Jack (Luke Kirby) and Cheyenne (Lou de Laâge) that was, seemingly, going to be answered in the next season. But it was reported that part of the reason for the show's cancellation came down to how...

Prime Video has been in the news recently for some high-profile cancellations. The Wheel of Time, a sprawling fantasy epic, was recently axed. The big-budget adaptation of the Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson novels saw a decline in viewership for its most recent third installment. Despite the fact that the drama series is reportedly well-liked by executives, with a strong global audience, that wasn't enough to pave the way for The Wheel of Time season 4.
It speaks to the fact that Prime Video, outside of action shows like Reacher and superpowered stories like The Boys and Invincible, is struggling with some of the quieter genres that make up a more balanced television portfolio. That is exemplified in the streamer's latest cancellation, which comes as something of a surprise.

Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, the Prime Video series revolves around Jack McMillan and Geneviève Lavigne, the artistic directors of two world-renowned ballet companies, one in New York and one in Paris. Well, blink and you miss it. Étoile, that elegant dance of drama and pliés, twirled onto Prime Video only to tiptoe off-stage roughly six weeks later. And let us tell you, it’s not every day you watch a streaming service ghost its own two-season promise like a bad date. We watched it, we admired its sinewy ambition, and now we’re sitting here with the dramatic whiplash of a dropped arabesque.
Despite a global storyline, highbrow ballet politics, Charlotte Gainsbourg’s icy brilliance, Luke Kirby’s tortured charm, and the holy grail of Rotten Tomatoes approval, Étoile still got the guillotine. So, why was the show canceled after only one season, despite an earlier two-season promise?
We’ve taken a pointed look (pun intended) at every toe-cramping reason!

Amazon’s Prime Video has halted further production on ballet drama “Étoile,” shutting down the project after its first eight-episode season. The decision comes even after the show secured a rare two-season straight-to-series commitment when it was ordered in 2023.
Created by “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” duo Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, the series launched on 24 April with a full-season drop, filming on location in Paris and New York at a reported high cost. Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg led an international ensemble that included Lou de Laâge and Gideon Glick.
Viewer data proved underwhelming. TheWrap notes that “Étoile” never appeared in Nielsen’s streaming top ten and quickly surrendered Prime Video’s internal chart to action hit “Reacher,” challenging the business case for a second run given the expense of dual-city shoots and a company of world-class dancers.

The curtain is down for “Étoile” at Prime Video. Despite receiving a two-season order when first greenlit, the Amazon ballet drama from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino was canceled at the Amazon streamer.
The series, which had originally received a two-year commitment from Amazon but pending an official green light for Season 2, ended on a cliffhanger.
The show was originally ordered when Jennifer Salke was in charge of Amazon MGM, and the change in management — Salke left that job in late March and MGM Amazon is now run by Prime Video boss Mike Hopkins — may have played a role.
But the show also struggled to find an audience on Prime Video. It debuted April 24 with all 8 episodes premiering, a now-rare release strategy for Amazon, as most Prime Video shows stream weekly.

It's going to be a one-season run for Étoile on Prime Video. Amazon MGM Studios is shelving the series after its first season, despite putting in an initial order for two seasons at the start.
Per Deadline, Étoile has been canceled. The show will continue to receive support for its Emmy campaign in the comedy categories, so there's still a chance it will get some award recognition, even if it isn't getting a second season. The series was initially given a two-season order in 2023, making Étoile a rare case of a series not to move forward with another season after initially having an order put in for multiple.

The first bow of “Étoile” is also its last. Prime Video has canceled the ballet series from “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, despite the streamer initially greenlighting the production with a two-season commitment.
The final pirouette comes roughly six weeks after the series first debuted in late April and earned generally positive notices from critics. All eight episodes were dropped simultaneously on Prime Video. That binge-release model of premiering all episodes at once has become a bit of a rarity for Amazon’s original programming.
“Étoile,” which starred Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg as ballet company directors teaming to save each other’s storied institutions, was ordered to series in 2023, about one month before the series finale of Sherman-Palladino and Palladino’s “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” premiered on Amazon’s streamer. “Maisel” was also initially picked up for two seasons back in 2017, though that commitment came after a pilot was produced.

Amazon’s Prime Video has canceled Étoile after a single season — even though the streamer had initially asked for two.
The news comes about six weeks after the series, from Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, premiered its full eight-episode season. Étoile is set in the world of ballet and centers on the heads of historic but struggling companies in New York and Paris (played by Maisel alum Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg) who decide to swap their principal dancers.
Prime Video gave the show a two-season, straight-to-series order in 2023 as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was in its final season. Such deals often have contingencies, however, by which a streamer or network can opt out after part of a multi-season order. That was the case with Étoile.
In the three weeks of Étoile’s release for which data is available, the show has not dented Nielsen’s top 10 streaming charts.

Exclusive: Adieu, Étoile. Prime Video is not proceeding with a second season of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s ballet drama series, Deadline has learned. The streamer and Amazon MGM Studios will continue to support the series’ Emmy campaign in the comedy categories.

Amy-Sherman Palladino and Daniel Palladino have dabbled in the world of ballet before — their 2012 series Bunheads focused on a ballet school and their Gilmore Girls character of Miss Patty (Liz Torres) was a dance teacher. But with Étoile, the showrunner couple wanted to explore the art form even deeper.
“I was a dancer, so I grew up in that world,” Sherman-Palladino said at a recent THR Frontrunners panel. “Most of the stuff that I’ve seen done around the ballet world, it’s usually like, ‘Oh, they’re so pretty and fluffy onstage,’ but then offstage they push each other off buildings and murder each other. I’m kidding. But there’s just so much more to it than that. They are actually a really interesting group of people, and it’s the one art form where you’re guaranteed to never make a dime. The team behind the Disney+ film Out of My Mind — producer Peter Saraf, director Amber Sealey, writer Daniel Stiepleman, and star Phoebe-Rae Taylor — joined together for a special Gold Derby "Making Of" panel to share how they adapted Sharon Draper’s beloved novel into a film that’s both deeply personal while also delivering a powerful message about inclusion and identity. “Watching the film and taking home the lessons in it will make the world a better place,” says Sealey.
For Saraf, the project began at home. “I read the book because my daughter told me to read it,” he shares. “She read it as many students do in school.” It didn’t take long for Saraf to recognize the novel’s cinematic potential — not just because of Draper’s powerful storytelling, but also because of her lived experience. “Sharon Draper … was a teacher, a mom of a child with cerebral palsy,...

Kelly Bishop. Alex Borstein. Milo Ventimiglia. Liza Weil. Emily Bergl … and Luke Kirby. When it comes to casting, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino are nothing if not loyal, and their ensembles inevitably feature more than one familiar face from series past. So after his Emmy-winning turn in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, it comes as little surprise that they would put Kirby center stage in their latest series, Étoile.
In this installment of the Dream Team: Étoile series, the creators talk with their leading man about his first audition, the “lifetime” commitment he made to them, and finally fulfilling his costume wish.
Gold Derby: Luke, how did you first find your way into the Palladino-verse?
Luke Kirby: I had an audition. My agent called me and said, "You have an audition," and it was for Lenny Bruce. And he said, "You could actually maybe get this role because you...

They’re married to their work, their words, their worlds. The husband-and-wife team of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino have created some of television’s most meticulous, hilarious, singular series, populated with unforgettable characters from the Gilmores to the Maisels. And they’ve done it all working side-by-side as creators, writers, directors, and executive producers — and still managed to stay married for “400 years” (according to them).
Gold Derby: What's your secret? How do you keep the magic going on and off-screen?
Amy Sherman-Palladino: So much alcohol. Just constant inebriation. I don't know, what is it, Dan? What's our magic?
Dan Palladino: We get this question from all walks of life. Our teamster driver would be like, how do you work with your wife, Dan? There's people who find it horrifying. There's people who find it inspiring. I think it really started in earnest on Gilmore Girls, when Amy wrote...

Étoile editor Tim Streeto was more than happy to run it back with Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino after their successful collaboration on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel led to three Emmy Award nominations for Streeto and years of acclaim.
“There was scuttlebutt that they were planning another show, and so when they asked me to come on, I was thrilled,” Streeto tells Gold Derby as part of our Meet the Experts: TV Editors panel.
Streaming now on Prime Video, Étoile focuses on Jack McMillan (Mrs. Maisel Emmy winner Luke Kirby), the artistic director of the New York Metropolitan Ballet, and Geneviève Lavigne (Charlotte Gainsbourg), the interim artistic director of Le Ballet National in Paris, and their attempts to resuscitate interest in the art form by switching companies. The meta pull of Étoile is that Sherman-Palladino, who was classically trained in ballet as a child, is trying to do the same...

Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino have become known for their rapid-fire dialogue across beloved series like Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
So when it came time to make their latest series Étoile, now streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video, Palladino veterans like Luke Kirby, Yanic Truesdale and Gideon Glick were familiar with the duo’s distinctive approach and beats, but newcomers to their writing like French stars Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou de Laâge were challenged by the “rhythm” of the language in the script.
“In English, it was difficult because you needed a certain rhythm and a certain pace that you didn’t have to start with,” Gainsbourg told The Hollywood Reporter at Étoile‘s New York premiere last month. “It took some energy to understand that that was my goal and understand that the words were important.”
And de Laâge shared that she and Gainsbourg helped with some of the French dialogue.

‘Étoile’: Inside the Show’s Collaborations with Lincoln Center and Three Real Paris Ballet Companies
Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino’s Amazon Prime Video series “Étoile” is set in the elite ballet worlds of Paris and New York City, and while the two dance companies featured in the series are fictional, the show utilized real locations that link each to the famed (and real) ballet institutions of each city.
The co-creators told IndieWire this visual association was intentional and important. A principal goal of the series was to capture dance being performed at the highest level, not unlike what one would see at the famed New York City Ballet, most famous for its yearly holiday performances of “The Nutcracker.” Physically grounding the show’s fictional companies in these real institutions helped make that connection.
In New York, that meant shooting at the very recognizable Lincoln Center.

On Friday, actors Luke Kirby and Gideon Glick join The Today Show to talk about their new Étoile, which follows two ballet companies in Paris and New York who agree to swap talent. Both actors took ballet lessons to prepare for the role. "It gave great insight into this field that we were about to immerse into," said Kirby. "It helped me understand the dedication that's required of these dancers. It also woke up different parts of the body...You could understand how one could become addicted to this art form." Glick noted that he found it "helpful to learn the literal and physical vocabulary," adding that he considers himself to be "a truly terrible dancer. The more I danced on this show, the more they took...

The last time we saw Luke Kirby on our screens, he was admittedly in not great shape, playing Lenny Bruce on the downward slope of his career in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Luckily, Kirby is now officially a member of the Palladino-verse — and the husband-and-wife creative team of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino centered him in their new ballet dramedy Étoile, which debuted last month on Prime Video. Kirby stars as Jack MacMillan, the head of a New York ballet company who engages in a talent swap with a Paris troupe in a bid to revive interest in both. Naturally, hilarity, romance and plenty of dance ensue.
“I'm really happy with how people are responding to the dynamism of the story, the kinetic energy of it, how different it is from our last endeavor,” Kirby tells Gold Derby. “And I think the biggest thing is just people saying the...

Cinematographer M. David Mullen knows better than most what it’s like to make a show with Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino. Mullen worked on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel with the Paladinos, winning three Emmy Awards for his acclaimed work on the Prime Video series.
Now, he’s back with the Palladinos for their new Prime Video series, Étoile, a passion project for the showrunning duo set in professional ballet.
“We always start with the broad strokes in portraying the lives of dancers in the American Ballet Theater setting and the Paris Ballet Theater setting,” Mullen tells Gold Derby as part of our Meet the Experts: TV Cinematography panel. “How much realism in terms of production design, lighting, and everything do we go for in terms of documentary realism because this is a real world, versus how stylized we make it since it’s a world about theater, dance, and music?...

When it comes to choosing her roles, Judith Light says it ultimately comes down to two key factors: the people she’ll be working with and the deeper meaning behind the character.
“What does my character represent, and how can I carry this character to the audience in a way that gives them some insight into this person?” she explains.
Those guiding principles led Light to one of her most recent projects, the Apple TV+ limited series Before, in which she stars opposite Billy Crystal. The show follows Eli (Crystal), a child psychiatrist grappling with the recent death of his wife, Lynn — played by Light — whose presence lingers as he processes grief and memory.
“I always knew I wanted to work with Billy,” Light says. “And when Before came about, the dynamics of it, the story, and my interest in reincarnation really drew me to the project.”

Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino have embarked on their second foray into the world of ballet with their latest series, Prime Video’s Étoile.
After previously working for one season on the 2012 drama Bunheads, Sherman-Palladino says her desire to tell another ballet-centric story was fueled by one thing: “vengeance.”
She’s joking, sort of.
“I wasn’t done, and I figured, let’s go back,” she said at the Deadline Studio at Prime Experience. “The first time, it was more about coming of age, and then 10 years later, I assume they’ve all come of age. We thought, how fun it would be to go backstage into if they become professional ballerinas?”

Étoile, Prime video’s new ballet dramedy is — like the meaning of its French title — full of star power. Sure, the creators have won Emmys. The actors have, too. But the dancers are what’s center stage, and for good reason.
Étoile’s end credits might as well be a list of the ballet world’s most elite: an A-list lineup of names from New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Boston Ballet, the Paris Opera and more.
“What I really love is the class, the artful choices,” Robbie Fairchild, a former principal dancer with New York City Ballet and now freelance artist, tells The Hollywood Reporter of the series. Fairchild plays Larry in Étoile — you can spot him rehearsing a duet by Tobias Bell (Gideon Glick) in episode one.

Etoile has just premiered on Prime Video, but is there going to be a second season for the ballet dramedy?
Prime Video may have a lot of big-budget shows like The Wheel of Time and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. However, they also have space for some smaller shows and still get top Hollywood talent involved with them.
That now includes Etoile, which premiered on Prime Video on April 24, 2025. It comes from Amy Sherman-Palladino, whose last Prime Video series was The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The acclaimed comedy was an awards darling with multiple Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG wins for its cast and Sherman-Palladino herself.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Étoile Season 1, Episode 8, “The Offer.”] Étoile‘s first season leaves viewers with plenty to look forward to as the finale sets up various cliffhangers, none as compelling as the triangle dynamic between ballet execs Jack (Luke Kirby) and Geneviève (Charlotte Gainsbourg) as well as star dancer Cheyenne (Lou de Laâge). While Jack and Geneviève’s stunt of swapping company members for a season does serve to revive interest in the art form, there are plenty of factors that lead to a fracturing of their relationship. By the end of the season, Jack has prematurely offered an Artistic Director position to Cheyenne after the current position holder, Nicholas (David Haig), falls ill to the point of almost dying. When he does pull through, Jack has to rescind the offer, angering Cheyenne, but also putting her in a predicament where she’s fallen out with Geneviève for having entertained the idea ...

Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino are no stranger to reviving their favorites in their projects. The “Gilmore Girls” and “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” creators lean on talent they trust and have built relationships with in their new series “Étoile.
Their new Prime Video comedy series “Étoile” is no exception. “Maisel” standout Luke Kirby stars as the head of the New York City’s premiere ballet company, who faces a tough decision in order to save the storied institution. And “Gilmore Girls” favorite Yanic Truesdale returns as a new Frenchman
“It’s only because we feel like we made the right choice before,” Daniel Palladino told TheWrap of bringing back talent. “If we feel this actor would work well with this character in this new thing, we just want to hire him back.”
“They’re also not surprised when they get a huge script,” Amy Sherman-Palladino joked. “Other people feel terrified and start to sob.

It's the TV acting equivalent to Ginger Rogers dancing like Fred Astaire, only backwards and in high heels — delivering Amy Sherman-Palladino's whip-smart, high-velocity dialogue, when it's not your native tongue.
That was the imposing task faced by French actresses Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou de Laáge as they stepped into leading roles in Prime Video's Étoile, the latest series created by Sherman-Palladino and her husband, Dan Palladino, wrapping both their brains and tongues around lines that were often mystifying in their meaning at the same warp speed as Lorelai Gilmore and Midge Maisel.
Gainsbourg plays Geneviève Lavigne, the general director of the Parisian ballet who makes a deal with her Manhattan counterpart, Jack McMillan (Maisel’s Luke Kirby), to swap their leading talent to drive interest in both of their programs; de Laáge stars as Cheyenne Toussaint, the sublimely talented, politically fiery prima ballerina whose life is upended by the swap.

If you miss The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Prime Video has a brand new show from the same creator that's a must-watch!
Prime Video has been known for some big shows, although not as much of an awards darling as other streamers. A major exception was The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, the writer/producer behind the beloved The WB/The CW dramedy Gilmore Girls, the series focused on Midge Maisel, a 1950s housewife who, after discovering her husband’s cheating, embarks on a career as a stand-up comic.
The show was a huge success not just with audiences but critics as well. It’s the most honored Prime Video original show with multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG award wins for stars Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein, and Tony Shalhoub. Sherman-Palladino herself earned Emmys for Best Comedy Series and her writing.

After charming audiences as New York City comedian Lenny Bruce in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Luke Kirby returns this week as a new New York star: Jack McMillan, director of the (fictional) Metropolitan Ballet Theater.
Kirby’s protagonist leads Étoile, Prime Video’s ballet dramedy from Maisel co-creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino (the wife-husband team also made Gilmore Girls and Bunheads). In a last-ditch attempt to spark ticket sales, Jack agrees to trade his company’s biggest stars with France’s (also fictional) Le Ballet National, helmed by Charlotte Gainsbourg’s Genevieve Lavigne.
Étoile’s eight episodes are stuffed with whimsical characters, sharp humor and an impressive cast of real dancers and great ballet. Through it all, Jack and Genvieve’s fight to save their beloved art form becomes the show’s most central duet.
