He was married to Alison Bradshaw and Winifred Hanley. He died on February 7, 1958 in North Hollywood, California, USA.

  • Serious-looking, dignified English character actor from the London stage. On screen, he specialised in portraying noblemen (Prince Metternich in Juarez (1939), Grand Duke Gregor in The Lone Wolf in Paris (1938)) and heads of state (Napoleon III in La vie de Louis Pasteur (1936) and Une dépêche Reuter (1940) ). Also a long gallery of doctors , police inspectors and diverse authority figures. Prolific on television from the mid-1950's.
  • Appeared in two Best Picture Oscar winners: La vie d'Emile Zola (1937) and Le tour du monde en 80 jours (1956), and six other nominees La fugue de Mariette (1935), Le marquis de Saint-Evremond (1935), La vie de Louis Pasteur (1936), Anthony Adverse (1936), Capitaines courageux (1937) and Kitty Foyle (1940).
