As South Korean television, or K-dramas, continue to find growing success with international audiences, one genre that they particularly excel at are revenge thrillers. A recent standout is "Taxi Driver," which is not based on Martin Scorsese's ultra-violent crime movie but rather the webtoon series "The Deluxe Taxi (Red Cage)" by Carlos and Lee Jae-jin. Premiering in 2021, the series proved enormously popular with Korean audiences and was renewed for two additional seasons. Available to stream on Rakuten Viki, "Taxi Driver" has a unique premise that makes its visceral thrills all the more compelling to viewers worldwide.
"Taxi Driver" follows Kim Do-gi (Lee Je-hoon), a former special forces soldier who begins driving for the Rainbow Taxi Company and is haunted by witnessing his mother's brutal murder. Do-gi's taxi company offers a unique "revenge-call" service, with drivers carrying out vengeance on behalf of paying customers who were wronged in their own respective ways.

Disney’s synopsis teases “everyday Koreans struggling to survive” who are lured to the sea by hidden treasure.
Ryu Seung-ryong leads as small-time grifter Oh Gwan-seok, joined by Yang Se-jong as his nephew Hee-dong and Im Soo-jung as hard-nosed industrialist Yang Jeong-suk, with veteran actors Kim Eui-sung and Kim Sung-oh among the supporting cast.
Newly released stills show Ryu in wide-collared 1970s garb, staring down a desk “with the intense gaze of a man who will stop at nothing for money,...

Disney has confirmed that Korean webtoon-to-screen adaptation “Low Life” is poised to begin production.
When valuable treasure is discovered off the coast of Korea, the country’s biggest degenerates come crawling out of the woodwork in the hope of striking it big. Word spreads after a fisherman got lucky and kept a piece of the booty for himself. Among those tempted to brave the depths of the ocean are two members of a fractious and disunited crime family – notably an uncle who both looked after his nephew and led him astray.
The original story was a webtoon written by Yoon Tae-ho and first published by Kakao between 2014 and 2015. The literal translation of the Korean title is ‘country bumpkin.’ The story itself was inspired by a real-life event when a 14th century Chinese ship was found in 1975 off the coast of Shinan, South Korea.
The adaptation is penned by Kang Yoon-sung,...

Clad in black suits as a mark of respect for the late Parasite actor Lee Sun-kyun, Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho and other prominent Korean film figures gathered for a solemn press conference in central Seoul on Friday, where they sternly called for an investigation into the police handling of Lee’s case that would tragically end in the actor’s death by apparent suicide.
“Throughout the two months, from the initial leak of internal information regarding the deceased’s investigation to the time of his death, we urge a thorough investigation by the authorities to ascertain whether there were any lapses in police investigative security,” Bong said, reading from an official statement prepared by 29 prominent arts and culture groups, including the Busan International Film Festival and the Korea Entertainment Producer’s Association. “We request a thorough investigation to determine if there were any unlawful media responses during the investigation.

“Parasite” director Boon Joon-ho led a press conference in Seoul on Friday, following the death by suicide of actor Lee Sun-kyun at the end of December.
Lee, who starred in “Parasite,” had been investigated by police in Incheon for possible recreational use of drugs and was at the center of a maelstrom of media and social media commentary for the two months prior to his death.
Backed by a formidable collection of artists, cultural organizations and trade associations, Bong called for an investigation into the police methods and for established media to reflect on the sensationalist coverage which may have contributed to Lee’s decision to take his own life. Public broadcaster Kbs was singled out for particular criticism.

Hill of Freedom
Written and directed by Sang-soo Hong
South Korea, 2014
For those unfamiliar with the work of South Korean auteur Hong Sang-soo, his movies typically go something like this: some demotic people get together and drink a lot, and they talk about their menial lives and discuss the profundities of nothing in particular, and in between those moments nothing happens. Sometimes there’s a dog. And it’s hysterical.
Hill of Freedom (which is not, as its title might suggest, a war film, should you make that false assumption) offers a 66-minute distillation of the essence of Sang-soo. It prominently features his masterfully static, unshowy shots of people talking, and his frequent, (purportedly) arbitrary zoom interruptions to capture the malaise and euphoria of everyday relationships. Here, he’s flensed the fat (not that there’s ever much fat in his films) and left us a dauntless display of virtuoso banality.
