The LL Cool J-owned classic rap showcase announced their June 28 Class of 2025 event at Newark’s Prudential Center, with performances from Busta Rhymes, Redman, Eric B. & Rakim, Remy Ma, Too $hort, Scarface, Plies, Boosie, Fabolous, Lil’ Mo, and others. Returning to hip-hop’s birthplace, classic rappers who pioneered the sound — as well as those who have proudly carried the rap torch — joined forces to honor the genre’s 50th birthday and celebrate its historic and global impact on pop culture.

The 2023 BET Awards just gave hip-hop the ultimate tribute in celebration of its 50th anniversary. Live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, culture's biggest night honored the genre's milestone birthday (Aug. 11) with an evening of performances from an unprecedented lineup of hip-hop icons and current stars.

The Sugarhill Gang, Mc Lyte, Big Daddy Kane, Warren G, Yo-Yo, Tyga, E-40, Trick Daddy, Trina, Uncle Luke, Chief Keef, Ying Yang Twins, Jeezy, T.I., and Master P hit the stage to rap some of their biggest hits. Kane led a brief Biz Markie tribute in honor of the late hip-hop icon. Exclusive: All the Streets Are Silent, a documentary portrait of the skateboarding and hip-hop scenes in New York in the late 1980s and early ’90s, has been acquired by Greenwich Entertainment.

Even though HBO and Russell Simmons are back in business with a new comedy series, Simmons will celebrate the 25th anniversary of his old HBO show, “Def Comedy Jam,” at rival Netflix instead.

Netflix announced Thursday that it would premiere “Def Comedy Jam 25” this fall. Performers include Bill Bellamy, Cedric the Entertainer, Dave Chappelle, Mike Epps, Adele Givens, Eddie Griffin, Tiffany Haddish, Kevin Hart, Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Kid Capri, Martin Lawrence, Tracy Morgan, Craig Robinson, Jb Smoove, Sommore and Joe Torry.

“Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam” aired on HBO from 1992 to 1997 and briefly returned in 2006. The show helped turn some of the stand-ups mentioned above into stars. Simmons, Stan Lathan, Sandy Wernick and Jesse Collins are executive producers of “Def Comedy Jam 25.”

There will never be another Heavy D.

When the Mount Vernon, New York, Mc debuted in 1987 as part of the group Heavy D & the Boyz, he made an immediate impact with his infectious dance hits. For the most part, Heav directed his material toward the ladies and even dubbed himself the Overweight Lover. With his music, Waterbed Heav oozed sex appeal, paving the way for other big-boned MCs like the Notorious B.I.G., Fat Joe and Rick Ross to garner a female fanbase.

Heavy was also a noted dancer and paired each of his hits with well-choreographed steps. It's difficult to imagine where the likes of Soulja Boy and Cali Swag District would be without Heavy D's contributions.

On November 8, Heavy D left us, but his music will live on forever.

DJ Trauma is taking his skills to a bigger stage. After spinning at Atlanta's Hot 107.9 for 10 years, Trauma recently left the station to focus on being the tour DJ for Ciara and Sean "The Pen" Garrett, as well as his own Carte Blanche team.

Trauma has long been a key member of the Atl DJ/mixtape scene thanks to his role as a co-founder of the Superfriends DJ clique, his work on radio and as a staple on the club scene, holding down parties for Diddy, Jamie Foxx and Jay-z, among others. Although Trauma has plenty of hip-hop ties, he believes his breakthrough mixtape was last year's #ialmostmadeamixtape, which had him teaming up with British R&B crooner Estelle.

It's been over a decade since his last solo album, but when Dr. Dre was honored with Ascap's Founders Award Friday night, it was a reminder to everyone that the doctor is still one of hip-hop's biggest pioneers in the game today.

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers held it's 23rd annual Rhythm and Soul Music Awards last night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, where some of music's biggest names were recognized for their contributions to music.

The biggest award of the night was handed to Dr. Dre for his achievements in the music industry and for inspiring and influencing his fellow music makers. The Ascap association put together a presentation package that played across the big screens, highlighting some of Dre's greatest quotes.

'There's no such thing as too much music,' the Dirty South honoree recalls of how he ran pioneering record label.

Now I know what your thinking: what a weird way to begin this article, but in a sense this is the best way to describe just what hip hop is. Well, the best way to describe a hip hop song at least. Hip hop is a culture built on 5 pillars: DJ’ing, Rapping, Graffiti, Breaking, and beatboxing. DJ Hero encapsulates one of these pillars and does an awesome job of making you feel like a DJ without piling on the intricacies of “turn-tablism.” However DJ Hero was less successful then its rhythm-game brethren and seemed to never really find its audience. Now there were many factors related to its lower sales, but the quality of the game was not one as it was considered a critical success.
