Samuel L. Jackson's New Western Bombed At The Box Office - And It's Not Hard To See Why
Image
Samuel L. Jackson is the most successful actor of all time measured purely in terms of the amount of money his movies have brought in at the box office. From his continued work as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to cinematic classics like "Pulp Fiction," audiences have turned up to see him do his thing on the big screen for decades. Unfortunately, his latest cinematic foray didn't arrive with the level of fanfare he's accustomed to.

Directed by Richard Gray, Roadside Attractions' "The Unholy Trinity" opened this past weekend at the box office, though one would be forgiven for not noticing. It grossed just $559,610 on 771 screens, making for a downright terrible $725 per-screen average. For context, "How to Train Your Dragon" brought in $83.7 million on 4,356 screens for a $19,214 per-screen average. While nobody was expecting this Western to do DreamWorks business, the end result leaves much to be desired for all involved.

‘The Unholy Trinity’ Review: A Mediocre Western That Doesn’t Deserve Samuel L. Jackson
Image
When we think of Samuel L. Jackson, we think of films like “Pulp Fiction” and “Jackie Brown” and, if we’re being honest, “Snakes on a Plane.” He’s an explosive actor who knows exactly when to detonate, lulling the audience into a sense of false familiarity with an easy smile and knowing chuckle that fall away at just the right moment. Then his kindly eyes turn sharply devilish and he reveals a fury we never would have expected, no matter how many movies of his we’ve seen. He’s a master of the dramatic and tonal segue, an extreme shift that makes some actors look laughable.

Jackson is at his tricky, insidious best in Richard Gray’s “The Unholy Trinity.” Unfortunately it’s a mediocre western that doesn’t deserve him. I’m not sure it deserves his co-stars Pierce Brosnan and Q’orianka Kilcher either. They’re all...

Action Western 'The Unholy Trinity' Fails To Impress Critics on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
The new action western starring Pierce Brosnan and Samuel L. Jackson hit theaters this week, promising a return-to-form for a genre that has churned out Yellowstone-lite projects over the past few years. However, it appears that critics have not been impressed with the gun-toting effort. Brosnan and Jackson combine for a formidable on-screen duo in the revenge tale, but it is their endless charm and charisma could not keep the new western outside of critics' line of sight.

Now playing in select theaters, The Unholy Trinity is an old-fashioned western film about a young man seeking revenge for the wrongful execution of his father. However, despite leaning on the period elements of the genre, it appears it did not wow critics. The film currently has a 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 14 reviews. Most critics felt underwhelmed by the film's "uninspired action," while others still found some positives about the...

‘The Unholy Trinity’ Review: A Solid Western Drama Boosted by the Star Power of Pierce Brosnan and Samuel L. Jackson
Image
By sheer coincidence, I watched “The Unholy Trinity” in the midst of binging on the 1950s and ’60s B-Westerns starring Audie Murphy, while preparing an article keyed to the centennial of the late actor and World War II hero. And I must say I was pleasantly surprised, and frequently delighted, to see how much filmmaker Richard Gray has captured the spirit and excitement of those unpretentious productions in his own sagebrush saga.

Indeed, devoted fans of the Murphy movies — especially the more, ahem, mature viewers — likely will be willing to overlook some of the messy violence and salty language to relish this trip in the wayback machine. But it’s not just a wallow in nostalgia: It also stands on its own merits as a satisfying entertainment that could easily find a receptive audience among folks who’ve never seen, or even heard of, such golden oldies as “Seven Ways from Sundown...

The Unholy Trinity Review — Blasphemy of a Once Proud Genre
Image
The Unholy Trinity is yet another example of the growing market for low-budget Westerns in recent years. Whether it’s the result of streaming platforms hungry for content or aging stars chasing one last lead role before riding off into the sunset, the demand clearly exists.

We’ve seen the good, the bad (The Old Way), and the ugly (Rust), and The Unholy Trinity lands somewhere in between. It’s a mixed bag of engaging and flat performances, plot points that swing from profound to downright bizarre, and violence that’s more gratuitous than gripping.

Ultimately, The Unholy Trinity feels like blasphemy against a once-great Hollywood genre.

Samuel L. Jackson Walks Into a Bar in Tense Sneak Peek From New Western 'The Unholy Trinity' [Exclusive]
Image
Samuel L. Jackson has a proposal for a saloon full of owlhoots in a new Collider-exclusive sneak peek from The Unholy Trinity. However, they may not be too interested in listening. The Western thriller also stars Pierce Brosnan and will be released by Roadside Attractions on June 13. In our sneak peek, Jackson plays the mysterious man known only as St. Christopher; as only Jackson can, he strolls into a dusty saloon and orders a whiskey. There, he notes that one of his fellow customers is looking considerably worse for wear...and when her brother calls him out on it, St. Christopher wonders why the man isn't busy cutting the throat of the man who roughed up his sister.

After theatrically downing his drink, he addresses the rest of the bar's patrons. The bar doesn't seem particularly friendly to outsiders, and especially not to those of St. Christopher's race, and...

Trailer: Samuel L. Jackson and Pierce Brosnan head to Montana for revenge western The Unholy Trinity
Image
If there’s one guy I want to see in more westerns, it’s Samuel L. Jackson. Fortunately, he’s got a pretty solid-looking one lined up; even better, we have the first trailer for Unholy Trinity.

In the trailer, we’re immediately introduced to Jackson’s St. Christopher, who sits with Brandon Lessard’s Henry Broadway, who tells him he’s is headed to the town of Trinity to get revenge on those responsible for his father’s death. Once Broadway enters town limits, he meets Pierce Brosnan’s Sheriff Dove, who immediately recognizes the name and warns the boy to not tell anyone else about his ancestry. As it turns out, St. Christopher also knew Mr. Broadway quite well, having had a history of stealing gold with him.

As for a more detailed plot, it’s been reported that the movie takes place in 1870s Montana and “picks...

Tom Hiddleston Has a Moment With Annalise Basso in New ‘Life of Chuck’ Image
Image
Although her role as Janice Haliday in Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck will involve plenty of dancing, the latest still released of Annalise Basso looks more serious than carefree. In it, Basso’s Janice stands opposite Tom Hiddleston’s titular character, Chuck Krantz, and the pair appears to be embroiled in a serious conversation. Although we can’t tell what they’re chatting about, it looks like Janice’s words are leaving a lasting mark on Chuck and vice versa, with each character deeply connected and attentive to what the other is saying.

The Life of Chuck will see its filmmaker, Flanagan, move away from his typical vein of horror and step into something else — something more existential yet still topped with a twist of the supernatural. It’s also a change for author Stephen King, who wrote the short story on which Flanagan’s production is based.

The Life Of Chuck | Full trailer lands
Mike Flanagan
Mike Flanagan’s upcoming take on the Stephen King novel The Life Of Chuck has a new trailer – and an August UK release date.

Off the back of last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, there was a feeling that Mike Flanagan’s upcoming adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Life Of Chuck could be something really rather good. The film won TIFF’s coveted People’s Choice Award, leading to buzz that the film would go on to earn a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards, given that 12 of the last 14 winners have gone on to do so.

That ultimately wouldn’t happen because the film’s US distributor Neon – presumably busy running a campaign to get Sean Baker’s Anora a Best Picture Oscar – elected to give the film a May 2025 release slot. While that date doesn’t suggest that Neon thinks The Life Of Chuck...

Loki Star Tom Hiddleston Creates A Universe In Full Trailer For Mike Flanagan's The Life Of Chuck
Image
“Every year that you live, that world will get bigger and brighter. And more detailed, and complex. You fill the whole thing. It'll be a universe."

Following a brief teaser, a poster and some promo stills, Neon has finally given us a proper look at Mike Flanagan's latest Stephen King adaptation, The Life of Chuck, which stars Tom Hiddleston in the lead role.

Though King is (obviously) best-known for his work in the horror genre, he has penned some notable sci-fi, fantasy, and even straightforward drama stories. The Life of Chuck is based on the legendary author's 2020 novella, and while it does contain some sci-fi elements, it is most definitely not a horror tale.

The movie had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2024, where it won the People's Choice Award. Positive reviews followed, and the film currently sits at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Life of Chuck has been described as,...

Tom Hiddleston grooves in his universe in the new poster for The Life of Chuck
Image
The upcoming film The Life of Chuck (which Neon will be giving a theatrical release on June 6) is the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – but it is not a horror movie. Neon has released a new poster of The Life of Chuck, which evokes a mysterious, but beautiful journey into an introspection of life.

Based on the short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds, The Life of Chuck consists of three separate stories linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumor and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house.

Tom Hiddleston (Loki) is playing Chuck, with Mark Hamill (Star Wars) playing a character named Albie.

10 Amazing Fairy Tale Adaptations That Are Way Better Than the Disney Versions
Image
While certain Disney live-action remakes have been decent, or at least tolerable, others have been borderline disastrous. Thankfully, Disney is not the only company that has delved into fairy tale adaptations, as some other interpretations have been far more successful.

Whether these non-Disney efforts further empower classic characters, provide a new spin on familiar stories, or offer visual feasts, they are all absolutely worth a watch. Perhaps these ten films will serve as reminders that fairy tales can still be fresh and exciting.

Wendy Takes a Different Approach to Peter Pan 2020, Streaming on Hulu and Disney+ Image via Searchlight Pictures

Director Benh Zeitlin’s Wendy takes the tenth spot on this list because it is far from perfect but still delightfully unique and ambitious. The film focuses on the heroine, Wendy, and her friends, the “Lost Boys. ". Instead of fully transporting the children to Neverland, though, Zeitlin’s story keeps them painfully close to reality.

6 Unanswered Questions Yellowstone Failed To Address
Image
"Yellowstone" season 5 is over, and with its final episode, the main flagship series appears to have rode off into the sunset for good. The franchise will continue with spin-offs like "1923," "The Madison," "6666," and more, so fans can look forward to more series set in Taylor Sheridan's cowboy-loving universe. At the same time, the end of "Yellowstone" has left us with burning questions that still need to be answered.

Of course, no one who watches "Yellowstone" is too concerned about plot holes. Viewers learned to accept them in season 1 after Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) dug up some dinosaur bones and the show led us to believe that people might come to try and claim them, only to never revisit the story. In some ways, "Yellowstone" is charming for its tendency to forget about certain plots while unloading more outlandish drama at us, and that's fine.

That said, while...

Neon Sets Summer Release Date for Mike Flanagan’s ‘The Life of Chuck’
Image
Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep) showcases the more sentimental side of Stephen King with The Life of Chuck, based on the short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds. Neon has officially set a release date for the new King adaptation.

The Life of Chuck will be released in theaters on May 30, 2025.

TIFF’s People’s Choice Award winner is split in three separate acts, all linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse. “It’s a Stand By Me for the multiple lives within each of us, pulled between our dreams and down-to-earth pragmatism.” Tom Hiddleston plays the title character.

I wrote in my TIFF review, “It’s the little things that matter most, both in life and in The Life of Chuck. Flanagan finds inventive and stylish ways to remind us of this throughout, shaking loose deep-seated memories from Chuck’s upbringing and highlighting...

Mike Flanagan’s The Life Of Chuck sets summer release date
Tom Hiddleston in Life of Chuck (2024)
The Life Of Chuck, based on Stephen King’s novel and directed by Mike Flanagan, is confirmed for a 2025 release.

Coming out of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, there was a feeling that Mike Flanagan’s upcoming adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Life Of Chuck could be an awards contender. Not only is this year’s race for Best Picture said to be one of the most open we’ve had for years, but The Life Of Chuck would win TIFF’s coveted People’s Choice Award, historically a strong indicator that a film would go on to earn a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards. Twelve of the last 14 winners have gone on to do so.

The film’s US distributor Neon, however, has instead elected to give the film a May 2025 release slot according to Deadline. Not only does that preclude the film...

Pierce Brosnan is finally getting to play “richer characters,” he told Variety.

The Wolf and the Lamb: Cassandra Scerbo, Adrianne Palicki star in folk horror Western
Image
As movies like Bone Tomahawk and Tremors 4 have proven, horror and Westerns are two great tastes that taste great together. I always like to hear that another horror / Western blend is in the works – so I was glad to see The Hollywood Reporter announce that the folk horror thriller The Wolf and the Lamb, which is set “during the western expansion of the 1870s,” is coming our way. Cassandra Scerbo of the Sharknado franchise and Adrianne Palicki of The Orville star in the film, which is currently in production, with filming taking place in Montana.

The Wolf and the Lamb marks the feature writing and directing debut of Michael Schilf. Scerbo is taking on the role of a widowed school teacher searching for her only son, who is the latest child to go missing in a tight-knit mining camp. But when the son miraculously returns, he is more monster than man.

Every Upcoming Stephen King Movie & TV Show Adaptation
Image
While Stephen King is a prolific horror author, not all of the writers upcoming adaptations belong to the genre he is most famous for. Stephen King is a horror legend. Ever since his 1974 debut novel Carrie hit the shelves, the author has been one of the most-read horror writers alive, but not all of Kings biggest hits have been horror novels. While The Shining and It prove that King is a great storyteller when it comes to spooky subjects, the epic fantasy of The Dark Tower series and the post-apocalyptic epic The Stand prove that there is more than frights in the writers back catalog.

This is reflected in Kings screen output too. While Hollywood rarely gets Stephen King adaptations right, some of the industrys best adaptations of his work are based on the authors non-horror output. 1994s The Shawshank Redemption is a masterpiece that is frequently listed among the best movies ever made,...

Stephen King Nearly Rejected Mike Flanagan Directing The Life of Chuck
Image
Mike Flanagan also didn't direct The Life of Chuck. Ahead of the movie's TIFF premiere, the filmmaker opened up about how author Stephen King almost prevented him from adapting his 2020 novella, which was published as part of the collection If It Bleeds.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, which debuted several first look images of The Life of Chuck, Flanagan explained how King usually "doesnt like to give the same filmmaker more than one thing, because it typically means one thing is not advancing at all." Since Flanagan had already acquired the rights to King's fantasy saga The Dark Tower with Trevor Macy, King was hesitant to let the filmmaker hop aboard another adaptation, out of fear that The Dark Tower would be put on the back burner. "He said, 'Well, lets focus on The Tower and Ill try to keep this one available for you for later,'" Flanagan recalled.

“Her lipstick color infuriates me”: Forget Kelly Reilly’s Beth, Another Yellowstone Character is So Sickeningly Obnoxious Even Taylor Sheridan Fans Hate Her
Image
Not all is well in the world of Yellowstone but that is not just obvious to the trolls and haters. Taylor Sheridan’s cowboy series brings out the grimy underbelly of the superficial ranch life fantasy. Filled with character stereotypes like John and Beth Dutton, the series mixes political machinations with generational trauma and corporate hierarchy.

Yellowstone [Credit: Paramount Network]

The real intrigue in the series’ storyline comes from the interfamilial drama and the ranches. Although Sheridan fails to raise the bar on the show past its third season, the fanbase of Yellowstone is vested enough to see it through till the end.

Yellowstone Fans Find Another Character to Target

The recent animosity between the Yellowstone fans and the show is rooted in a deep-seated hatred directed at Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton and her treatment of Jaime. However, with time, a faction of the fandom has found a different character...

Mike Flanagan is done with bleak, hopeless endings
Image
Filmmaker Mike Flanagan has written some dark, disturbing endings in his career… but we shouldn’t expect to see much of that from him in the future. During a recent interview with actress Katee Sackhoff for the Sackhoff Show podcast, Flanagan explained why he’s done with bleak, hopeless endings.

Flanagan told Sackhoff (with thanks to Cbr for the transcription), “A lot of the stuff I was writing had really bleak endings and very hopeless endings. It pivots right after [Hill House] and everything I’ve done since then doesn’t have that.” Sackhoff asked if that’s the influence of his wife Kate Siegel coming through, and Flanagan said, “I think in a lot of ways it is. And it’s because of family. When Kate and I got together, my outlook changed a lot. We had kids of our own and the kids started growing up and it...
