Director Fred Dekker’s 1987 cult classic monster mash The Monster Squad (watch it Here) features variations of the classic Universal Monsters characters Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, and the Gillman, but it wasn’t actually a Universal production. So to avoid getting in trouble with Universal, the movie’s effects crew at the Stan Winston Studio had to create their own specific designs of the creatures… but that didn’t stop them from sneaking homages to the original monsters in there. It has been known for a while now that designers Steve Wang and Matt Rose hid the face of the original Creature from the Black Lagoon somewhere on the neck of their Gillman suit. Now – as pointed out by Monster Squad super-fan Shawn Robare of Plastic Rocket Pop – the exact location of that face has been found!

With a love of cinema woven into its DNA, The Monster Squad helped indoctrinate ’80s kids to the classic monsters. The generation that grew up watching it on home video and HBO look back on the 1987 film with the same reverence director Fred Dekker had for the Universal monster movies, and now they’re passing it down in a similar fashion. There’s no better way to introduce the next generation than with the new 4K edition.

Conceived as “The Little Rascals meets the Universal Monsters,” the cleverly-plotted film clocks in at a tight 82 minutes. The punchy script by Dekker and Shane Black doesn’t have an ounce of fat on it, save for the casual homophobia, misogyny, and body shaming of the time. Drawing inspiration from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, human characters offer well-placed levity and a bevy of memorable one-liners, but the monsters are played straight.

Fred Dekker's The Monster Squad gets a 4K restoration 36 years after its theatrical release.

Per ComicBook.com, Kino Lorber will re-release the cult 1987 supernatural kids comedy on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. The distributor has taken the original 35mm print of the movie and created the 4K master from its new High Dynamic Range/Dolby Vision system. Currently on pre-order sale for $49.95, the new release has three discs for the 4K Uhd, the Blu-ray with features from the 2007 DVD release, and a third Blu-ray containing the documentary Wolfman's Got Nards.

Next year will mark the 40th anniversary of director Fritz Kiersch’s 1984 Stephen King adaptation Children of the Corn (watch it Here) – but the folks at Trick or Treat Studios are getting the celebration started early. They’re already accepting pre-orders for a two-pack of action figures based on the characters Isaac and Malachi! An image of the action figures can be seen at the bottom of this article. The action figures are expected to start shipping out in just a couple months, on September 15th.

It’s not very often that you see the 1987 cult classic monster mash The Monster Squad (watch it Here) in the news, but we have some cool news to share about the movie today! Dawn of the Discs has revealed that Kino Lorber is planning to give The Monster Squad a 4K Uhd release sometime later this year.

A specific release date has not yet been announced, but it’s good to know that The Monster Squad will be hitting 4K later this year. As of right now, all we know that this release will contain is the 4K disc with a “Brand New Hdr/Dolby Vision Master – From a New 4K Scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative!“, plus a regular Blu-ray copy.

At the time of its release in 1984, parents and critics alike were outraged at the pack of killer kids featured in Stephen King's Children of the Corn.

Naturally, the film has become a bona fide '80s horror cult classic and spawned many sequels. On Friday, July 2nd, publishing/production house 1984 will release a deluxe gatefold vinyl edition of the Children of the Corn soundtrack, its first time on wax since the film's original debut. The LP (containing foil elements on the cover) will be available in five different variants, along with cassette and CD editions.

All packaging is designed by "Ghoulish" Gary Pullin, who previously worked with 1984 on his coffee table book Ghoulish: The Art of Gary Pullin, the vinyl soundtracks for the films Prom Night ('80) and Silent Night, Deadly Night ('84), plus the double A-side 12-inch for Goblin's themes for Suspiria and Dawn of the Dead.

On this day in 1984, Children of the Corn was released. The corn cult horror, based on a chilling Stephen King short story, wasn't initially a critical smash nor an overly respected piece of scary filmmaking, though it's gone on to aptly develop a fanbase of dedicated appreciators. Some of those fans even tolerate the long list of mediocre sequels the flick spawned. Whether you like the often useless made-for-tv sequels or not, we can't deny the movie offers enough value in the horror canon to have spurred so many follow-ups. Cults, evil children, and a deadly isolated corn town? It was the perfect recipe for cinematic creepiness. The mere idea sticks with people throughout the course of life. Rightfully, the 1984 film - a minor horror classic - has stood the test of time, remaining a favorite scary flick from childhood for many, and an all-time favorite for others.

A new take on horror maestro Stephen King's Children of the Corn wrapped production earlier this year, and, while fans of the source material and the original movie may already be rolling their eyes at the prospect of another remake, they might want to consider putting their eyes back into the forward position, as the new material has now officially been given an R-rating. With a lot of modern-day horror flicks often given the dreaded, neutering PG-13 rating, this should come as a very pleasant surprise.

The remake of Children of the Corn has earnt its rating due to "violence and bloody images," which should at least suggest that the movie does not intend to hold back and will hopefully lean into the story's more intense elements.

I don't know about you, but one of my favorite horror movies as a kid was Night of the Creeps director Fred Dekker and Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang filmmaker Shane Black's The Monster Squad. Like many The Monster Squad fans out there, I've wished for a sequel for about as long as I can remember. And today we've learned that a Monster Squad series was in the works at one point in time! But it was ultimately abandoned because the powers that be behind the scenes felt it was too similar to Stephen King's It. Weak.

The film: When Isaac (John Franklin) returns with a group of other children from playing in the cornfields around the town of Gatlin, Nebraska, he leads a revolt that sees the adults slaughtered fast and mercilessly. The only two children who didn’t play in the corn that day, Job (Robby Kiger) and his sister Sarah (Anne Marie McEvoy) remain unhomicidal. Three years later, Vicky (Linda Hamilton) and boyfriend Burt (Peter Horton) are driving near Gatlin when a little boy stumbles in front of their car. He’s had his throat slit and in their quest to get help, the pair find themselves in the midst of Isaac’s not-so-merry band.

On February 19th, Olive Films will release new Blu-ray versions of Night of the Demons 2 and The Monster Squad. At this time, bonus features have not been finalized, but we do have the cover art and initial release details.

The Monster Squad: Count Dracula has until midnight to retrieve an ancient amulet that will give him final control over the delicate balance between good and evil in the world. To help him, the creepy Count calls on some old friends: the weird Wolfman, grotesque Gill-Man, mildewed Mummy and freaky Frankenstein. As the ghoulish group gets closer to the amulet, it’s up to The Monster Squad, headquartered in the local tree house, to pool its questionable resources and stop the monster mayhem! But there was another character as equally essential to the story who's "live" footage so to say, was trimmed from the final theatrical version. Once having almost stopped the entity know only as He Who Walks Behind The Rows, Officer Hodgekiss, a.k.a. The Blue Man, met an untimely demise that was to serve as an example for anyone who defied the ruling of Isaac. But what exactly happened to The Blue Man? As it goes in editing, it seems that footage involving a revealing scene was cut but promotional stills were used for various advertising materials and media outlets. To commemorate the anniversary of the original theatrical release date (March 9th, 1984), I thought it would be fun to get a retrospective view from some of the actors that contributed to the film and get their thoughts on 25 years later....

In the original Children of the Corn, many actors were brought together to keep us terrified by children in a small Nebraska town and cornfield. One actor's name you may not recognize, but are sure to remember his performance, is Corey Frizzell. Corey played one of the children from Gatlin and was featured in several scenes. One thing you may not know is that Corey also was a stand-in double for the character of Job, played by Robby Kiger. Recently, we talked with Corey about Sioux City, being a part of the Frizzell country music legacy, and being trampled by Peter Horton.
