Dark-haired, smoky-voiced German character actor, who began as a singing child star. He was best known internationally for his role as East German 'Stasi' goon Hermann Gromek, killed dramatically by Paul Newman in Alfred Hitchcock's thriller Le rideau déchiré (1966).
