This Day That Year: Revisiting Kitne Door… Kitne Pass
Image
Subhash K Jha shines the light on Kitne Door… Kitne Paas , which starred Fardeen Khan and Amrita Arora, as it completes 23 years in another terrific edition of his This Day That Year column.

For whatever it may be worth, this is the best film that the prolific Gujarati-Hindi veteran moviemaker Mehul Kumar has made. After unleashing a blizzard of bloodied melodrama in films with names like Nafrat Ki Aandhi and Tiranga, Mehul Kumar goes young, soft, and sometimes subtle in Kitne Door… Kitne Paas ….Well, not quite subtle because his Gujarati melodramatic antecedents keep surfacing in the most unpleasant comic sequences that have us squirming in our seats.

But there’s evidence here of some poised writing as two young bubbly NRIs take off together from “America” (Australia is passed off as Trump-country in the film) to get into arranged marriages back home in India. On the way, they fight...

Looking back at Tabu’s 2010 Comedy? – Toh Baat Pakki
Image
On paper, the idea of playing the busybody housewife Rajeshwari in Toh Baat Pakki, who seems to have only one mission in life, namely to see her sister (newcomer Yuvika) married off, must have sounded like an exciting new character to explore for the brilliant actress. Alas, Tabu had not bargained for the mundane situations and the pedestrian dialogues that her character is put into.

Toh Baat Pakki is one of those tragic comedies that don’t elicit a hint of humour. If Basu Chatterjee lost the plot, he would probably have turned up with this listless ode to the middle-of-the-road movies of the 1970s.

This middle-of-the-roader gets stranded in the middle of nowhere. The plot is intrinsically bereft of ingenuity. The direction is plodding and strained most of the way.

Tabu plays the interesting-on-paper dreadful-in-execution housewife as part-schemer, part-dreamer but entirely annoying and avoidable. Unlike the shrew that Sridevi...

The Throwback Shyam Benegal Interview On Zubeidaa Which Clocks 24 Years On January 19
Image
India’s most prolific director Shyam Benegal released two very dissimilar, almost antithetical films. To no one’s surprise, both Zubeidaa and Hari Bhari, released within two weeks of each other, attracted sizeable attention from both the critics and the discerning public. Here, in this throwback interview, he talks about his two films.

Was it difficult to make Karisma Kapoor do the more complex scenes in Zubeidaa?

No, no. I personally believe that if an actor knows the character’s motivations, it’s her own intuitive interpretation of the character that makes the performance work. But the actor Must understand the character’s motivations. Sur mein hona chahiye, na? The actor must know why her character is placed in a situation, where she’s coming from and going.

You’ve already said Karisma Kapoor has given a performance on a par with Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil. Were you tempted...

Om Puri
Om Puri and Linda Bassett in East Is East We've got a bit of a retro focus going on for this week's selection and if you're looking for more inspiration, you can catch the tale of a tiger or two in this week's Streaming Spotlight.

East Is East, 11.25pm, Film4, Monday, August 2

Ayub Khan-Din skilfully adapts his culture clash play for the big screen, while Damien O'Donnell directs with plenty of energy to tell this Seventies set story of a Pakistani migrant to the UK, George Khan (Om Puri), his British wife Ella (Linda Bassett) and their family. Khan has a grand plan for his kids that includes arranged marriages but they have other ideas with revolution on the horizon. The humour here skewers its targets but there is a nuance to the compromises that must be reached which displays a winning warmth for the push and pull of families.

Santa Banta Pvt Ltd – Movie Review by Subhash K Jha
Starring Boman Irani, Vir Das, Neha Dhupia, Lisa Haydon, Sanjay Mishra, Vijay Raaz, Ram Kapoor

Directed by Akash Deep

When it comes to goofy bantering, the two guys Santa and Banta are the tops. A film on their enthusiastic asininity could be just the prescription for an evening of lighthearted entertainment, especially when two actors with impeccable comic timing are playing the lead.

The saddest sight in a comedy is watching two talented comic actors struggling with lines that seem to be written as an ongoing joke on how unfunny jokes can be.

Santa Banta Pvt Ltd takes the two beloved Sikh characters from a million and one SMS jokes in the past 15 years, and squeezes them into a satirical straightjacket so suffocating and turgid it reduces the two comic heroes to a shadow of a caricature.

Don’t get me wrong. This film boasts of a wealth of comic...

Related story on The Daily Beast: Britain's Crush on Obama

Osama bin Laden's death is a severe blow to al Qaeda-but not its end. His death answers some key questions about the terror cell and Pakistan, but leaves some even more perplexing ones still open.

First, congratulations to President Obama and the CIA. From the very start of his administration, he ordered an intense focus on al Qaeda and its leader.
