March’s home entertainment releases are ending on a quiet note, as we’ve only six titles arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday. Scream Factory has their Cherry Falls and Murders in the Rue Morgue / The Dunwich Horror double feature Blus for you guys to look forward to, and Vinegar Syndrome is keeping quite busy themselves with three different releases: Frightmare, Pigs, and their Revenge of the Virgins / Teenage Zombies double feature. Last but certainly not least, the Christopher Lee cult classic The City of the Dead is also getting the HD treatment on March 29th as well.

Filth, Pride and Philomena among film nominees; awards take place on Jan 19 in London.

Sandi Toksvig will present the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain annual Awards at Riba, in London, on Jan 19, 2015.

In the two film categories, Pride (Stephen Beresford), The Selfish Giant (Clio Barnard) and Starred Up (Jonathan Asser) are up for Best First Screenplay, while Filth (Jon S Baird), Metro Manila (Sean Ellis & Frank E Flowers) and Philomena (Jeff Pope & Steve Coogan) will compete for Best Screenplay.

TV programmes up for awards include Line of Duty (Jed Mercurio), Peaky Blinders (Steven Knight), The Great Train Robbery (Chris Chibnall) and House of Fools (Vic Reeves & Bob Mortimer).

A special award for outstanding contribution to writing and writers will be presented on the night.

Keira Knightley's West End debut tops a host of un-Christmassy openings, but time's running out for La Cage aux Folles

We're getting close to Christmas, but there are a remarkable number of unfestive openings this week. Blithe Spirit in Manchester should – of course – be a spirited production, directed by Sarah Frankcom who recently staged Simon Stephens's Punk Rock. In London, Patrick Hamilton's Rope is at the Almeida, the hugely starry Misanthrope with Keira Knightley and Damian Lewis is at the Comedy, Simon Callow is doing his Dickens turn in Dr Marigold and Mr Chips at Riverside Studios, and there's even an Agatha Christie thriller, A Daughter's Daughter, arriving opportunistically at Trafalgar Studios to fill in for a few weeks.
