Following the announcement that Star Trek: Strange New Worldswill be ending after Season 5, one of the show’s stars is reacting to the news. The news that the fifth season will be the last for the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, led by Captain Christopher Pike, comes as Season 3 is set to premiere July 17, 2025 on Paramount+.
Paramount+ announced June 12 that Strange New Worlds had been renewed for Season 5 -- but also that Season 5 will be the show's final season. It's a very early decision on the show's fate, since Season 3 has yet to launch and Season 4 isn't expected until 2026. But actor Anson Mount, who plays Captain Pike, is already sharing his thoughts on the news.
Mount took to Instagram to express his gratitude for the series. In a post that pictured the actor in full Captain Pike uniform, complete with his signature hair, Mount wrote: “I grew up...

Star Trek Captains William Shatner and Anson Mount hilariously debate who really replaced Jeffrey Hunter's Captain Christopher Pike in Star Trek: The Original Series. Hunter was the initial actor cast as the lead of Star Trek in its original 1965 pilot, "The Cage." However, NBC ordered Star Trek to be retooled, with every actor replaced except for Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock. When Star Trek premiered in September 1966, William Shatner was the series lead as Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise.
On X, William Shatner replied to a post from Anson Mount about Captain Pike's replacement on Star Trek. Mount started the exchange by sharing a funny meme of Jeffrey Hunter's Captain Pike in "The Cage" telling Spock, "Next episode I'm being replaced by a dude whose overacting could probably make even you laugh out loud." Anson tagged Shatner, joking "Not sure who this one is aimed at.

Obviously inspired by the 2020 pandemic, Staycation is a brilliantly dark-humoured look at that bizarre point in time where the world stood still and people argued about what was the “truth” about the situation on a daily basis. In fact Russ Emanuel’s film is probably the most on-the-nose “retelling” of that time – but with a wonderful skewed, laugh out loud, look at how insane the pandemic was. Only the pandemic is not of the “flu” variety – it’s more a zombie apocalypse, with the viruses victims here turning into “wanderers” (aka zombies).
The film’s central narrative follows Professor Edward Bellows (Sean Kenney), a lead virologist striving to develop a cure for the deadly Nix virus. Opening...

A harsh reality about Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) was exposed in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, but this trait also makes the Captain of the USS Enterprise admirable. Directed by Valerie Weiss and written by Dana Horgan, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 2, "Ad Astra Per Aspera" dealt with the court-martial of Lt. Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) Aka Number One. Una was nearly drummed out of Starfleet and imprisoned for lying about being a genetically engineered Illyrian.
One of the best Star Trek courtroom episodes ever, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' "Ad Astra Per Aspera" began with Captain Pike taking it upon himself to save Number One. Pike recruited Neera Ketoul (Yetude Badaki) as Una's defense counsel. Despite her reluctance after her childhood falling out with Una, Neera took on the United Federation of Planets' tribunal on Number One's behalf. Star Trek has one oddly specific death penalty that makes no sense. By the 23rd century of Star Trek: The Original Series, humanity no longer uses the death penalty as punishment, preferring to rely on incarceration and rehabilitation. Gene Roddenberry envisioned the Star Trek universe as a Utopian future. While later Star Trek series explored the darker aspects of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets, no version of the Federation this side of the Mirror Universe employs capital punishment.

Many of the great Captains in Star Trek have crossed through space and time, whether intentional or accidental, and met each other. Feature films, series premieres, and important franchise anniversaries are peppered with connections between different Star Trek captains, with time travel sometimes coming into play for captains from different parts of the Star Trek timeline. Star Trek captains in the same era, like the 24th-century setting of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager, can meet fairly easily, but it's still exciting to see captains from different shows interact.
With Star Trek's longevity, we're not counting every single Star Trek character to hold the rank of captain. It's a given that Star Trek characters who have become captains after being series regulars, like Captain William Riker (Jonathan Frakes), have met their own commanding officers. Star Trek's very first villains established a theme that would continue in every Star Trek TV series and movie throughout the franchise. Star Trek's original pilot, "The Cage," was produced in 1964, introducing the USS Enterprise commanded by Captain Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter). Although NBC rejected "The Cage" and ordered a second pilot that became Star Trek: The Original Series, "The Cage's" events canonically predate the known events of the 23rd century seen in Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and the first six Star Trek movies. Hence, the denizens of Talos IV are Star Trek's original villains who aren't really villains.

Captain Christopher Pike had two instances in Star Trek where he wanted to quit being Captain of the USS Enterprise. Pike was originally portrayed by Jeffrey Hunter in Star Trek's original, rejected pilot, "The Cage." Sean Kenney portrayed a grievously injured Fleet Captain Pike in Star Trek: The Original Series' "The Menagerie." Over 50 years later, Captain Pike returned to Star Trek canon when he was played by Anson Mount in Star Trek: Discovery season 2. Mount's popularity led to his receiving his own spinoff about Captain Pike's voyages aboard the Starship Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine has a touching connection to Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. In the 1990s, when Star Trek: Deep Space Nine aired, Christopher Pike wasn't the fully realized character that Star Trek: Discovery season 2 and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds made him out to be. Instead, DS9's references to Captain Pike were deep-cut nods to Star Trek history, because Pike had only appeared in two Star Trek: The Original Series stories before Star Trek replaced Pike with Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner).
After the first pilot episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, "The Cage", NBC executives wanted Gene Roddenberry to change the entire cast of Star Trek: The Original Series. The first Captain Pike actor, Jeffrey Hunter, abandoned playing Pike for a movie career, so Star Trek built a story around Hunter's unwillingness to return.

William Shatner's Captain James T. Kirk replaced the original Captain of the Starship Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series, Captain Christopher Pike, who was played by Jeffrey Hunter. Hunter starred in the first Star Trek pilot that creator Gene Roddenberry wrote and produced for NBC studios, "The Cage". Star Trek's original pilot featured Captain Pike as a prisoner of the Talosians, highly intelligent aliens intent on keeping Pike on Talos IV as a mate for Vina (Susan Oliver), whom they'd rescued from a downed starship 18 years earlier. The Talosians would provide for Pike's every need and want through their impressive telepathic skill, but Pike would be trapped in the fantasy with Vina.

Captain Pike was re-introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, along with Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck), and Number One (Rebecca Romijn). Anson Mount prefers Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to stick with Captain Christopher Pike's established canon instead of deviating from the inevitable tragedy waiting for Pike in Star Trek: The Original Series. Less than a decade after Strange New Worlds, Fleet Captain Pike (Sean Kenney) suffers a horrific accident that leaves him disfigured and trapped in a wheelchair. Pike became aware of his future in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, and Chris was burdened by his existential crisis in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1.

Before there was William Shatner, there was Jeffrey Hunter. The actor may not be a household name today, but when "Star Trek" was in its infancy, he was a rising star in Hollywood – and an undeniable heartthrob. Hunter famously played the Enterprise's original captain, Christopher Pike, in Gene Roddenberry's first "Star Trek" pilot, but he didn't return when the show was given a second chance to perfect its first impression, leading Roddenberry to come up with the Captain Kirk character instead. The reason for Hunter's exit? Well, it depends on who you ask.
The second "Star Trek" pilot was made nearly 60 years ago at this point, so it's no surprise that some of the details of its creation have been muddled or lost over the years. There's no shortage of information about Hunter's involvement with the show, but accounts of his exit differ wildly. It's common knowledge that when...

Lt. Spock's secret hijacking of the USS Enterprise adds an intriguing twist to his relationship with Lt. Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds should give Captain Pike a happier ending. Anson Mount's portrayal of Pike made him a better character who deserves a brighter future. Strange New Worlds has already altered canon, making it possible to save Pike.
I hope Star Trek: Strange New Worlds finds a way to save Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) from his tragic fate, even if that means breaking Star Trek canon. Star Trek: The Original Series' two-part episode, "The Menagerie," revealed that Fleet Captain Pike, who commanded the USS Enterprise before Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) took over, suffered a horrific and debilitating injury while rescuing several Starfleet cadets, leaving the former captain confined to a wheelchair and unable to move or speak on his own.
Although Spock (Leonard Nimoy) helps ensure his former Captain has a chance at a happy ending on Talos IV, Pike's life with Vina (Susan Oliver) is mostly an illusion.

Captain Pike's future in "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is teased to be tragic, with his girlfriend potentially facing a fatal mission in the season 2 finale. The arrival of a formidable starship belonging to the Gorn hints at a war that may result in casualties, including Captain Batel and her crew. The fate of Captain Pike's relationship with Batel is uncertain, as "Star Trek: The Original Series" suggests they ultimately separate before Pike's accident and transfer to Starbase 11. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds reinvented Captain Christopher Pike for the better, and Anson Mount truly breathes new life into the character. Originally played by Jeffrey Hunter, Captain Pike was introduced in the unaired pilot of Star Trek: The Original Series titled "The Cage." Though this episode is widely available to watch now, many Trek fans met Captain Pike (Sean Kenney) in the two-part Tos episode "The Menagerie." These episodes use footage from "The Cage" to tell the tragic story of Captain Pike's last mission, and this story has become an important part of Star Trek lore.
Before Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) took over command of the USS Enterprise, Christopher Pike served as her Captain, embarking on a five-year mission to explore the final frontier. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows Captain Pike's journey and brings more depth to his character, as well as the rest of his crew.

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 4 - "Among The Lotus Eaters"Captain Batel (Melanie Scrofano) is a great girlfriend for Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but Star Trek canon says this relationship sadly can't last. Batel was introduced in Strange New Worlds' series premiere. She is the Captain of the USS Cayuga, and Strange New Worlds season 2 later established Batel is an officer in Starfleet's Judge Advocate General's office.
Captain Batel had to follow her orders to arrest Pike's Number One, Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn), in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1's finale, and Batel served as the prosecutor at Una's court-martial in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 2, "Ad Astra Per Aspera." Despite the friction this caused between Batel and Chris, they maintained their relationship until Pike torpedoed it in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 4, "Among the Lotus Eaters.

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 2 - "Ad Astra Per Aspera"Number One (Rebecca Romijn) won her trial in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 2, but Captain Christopher Pike's (Anson Mount) reaction makes his dark future even sadder. In "Ad Astra Per Aspera," Commander Una Chin-Riley was court-martialed for lying to Starfleet about being a genetically-modified Illyrian. Starfleet wanted to throw the book at Una with charges of sedition and 20 years imprisoned in a Federation penal colony, but Number One's lawyer, Neera Ketoul (Yetide Badaki), brilliantly won Una her freedom.
Captain Pike went above and beyond to help Number One during her court-martial in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It was Pike who risked his life in the Vaultera Nebula to recruit Neera, an Illyrian civil rights attorney who was childhood friends with Una Chin-Riley. But Neera and Una had a falling out when...

In that seminal Tos 2-parter, Commander Spock (Leonard Nimoy) abducted the critically wounded Fleet Captain Christopher Pike (Sean Kenney) and absconded with the USS Enterprise. Captain James T. As in the real life Navy, there are some differences between the role of Commodore and Fleet Captain in the Star Trek universe. There have been several Starfleet Commodores over the years, with the most notable being Commodore Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) in Star Trek: Picard season 3. The role of Fleet Captain is less represented across Star Trek history, with only two Starfleet officers known to have held the position: Fleet Captain Christopher Pike (Sean Kenney) and Fleet Captain Garth (Steve Inhat). A century later, Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) was offered the position of Fleet Captain of the ill-fated Texas-class line of starships.
While Fleet Captain is a promotion, it's unclear if it outranks Commodore, but both ranks sit underneath Vice Admiral in the Starfleet hierarchy. In Naval tradition, a Fleet Captain was essentially Chief of the Admiral's staff, which is why the title was retired in favor of Chief of Staff.

The upcoming crossover between Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds could shatter the Temporal Prime Directive, wrecking canon in the process. Ensigns Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Bradward Boimler (Jack Quaid) will be sent back in time to the 23rd century at some point in Snw season 2. As keen students of Starfleet history, the pressures of keeping their knowledge of the future to themselves could prove to be too much, especially for the anxiety-ridden Boimler. Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) already knows about his own death, and this foreknowledge could accidentally trigger Boimler or Mariner to provide unsolicited additional information.
Knowing Boimler, his anxiety over blabbing details about the USS Enterprise crew's futures will actually cause him to reveal far more information than he would if he kept a cool head. Mariner, meanwhile, will likely follow the advice of Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), who once...

Two great Star Trek Captains, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Christoper Pike (Anson Mount) and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), never becoming Admirals is a tragedy. Every Star Trek TV series essentially centers on its Captain, and many of those heroic Starfleet leaders have gone on to be promoted to Admiral. When Star Trek: The Motion Picture continued the story of Star Trek: The Original Series, Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) was reintroduced as Admiral Kirk, Chief of Starfleet Operations, which set the mold for other Captains to follow.
The next Star Trek Captain to become Admiral was Star Trek: Voyager's Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). Admiral Janeway was made official in Star Trek: Nemesis when she gave Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-e orders to go to Romulus. Admiral Janeway plays an even more vital role now in Star Trek: Prodigy.

Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) is the latest Star Trek character to be promoted to the role of Commodore, following in the footsteps of many Starfleet officers. The Commodore rank is one of many Naval terms adopted by Starfleet over the years, and Geordi is the first regular Trek character to be given the rank. A Commodore is placed between Captain and Rear Admiral in both the real-life Navy, and the fictional Starfleet, and is the most junior of the flag officer ranks.
In Naval terms, a Commodore is the officer in charge of more than one ship. As the officer in charge of the Athan Prime Fleet Museum, Geordi earned his Commodore rank because he's in charge of the various legendary starships housed in the museum's collection. While the Commodore rank is relatively rare in both the modern Navy, and the history of Starfleet, Geordi isn't the only character to hold the rank.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) may not be the sort of infamous lothario that Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) was, but he’s had a few important romantic relationships. Originally played by Jeffrey Hunter, Pike was the commanding officer of the USS Enterprise in the first pilot episode for Star Trek: The Original Series, "The Cage." Hunter declined to return for the second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," and was replaced by Shatner's Kirk. Pike - played by Sean Kenney under heavy makeup - played an important part in the Tos season 1 episode "The Menagerie," but otherwise became a Star Trek footnote.

Star Trek has found great success in recasting many of its iconic characters with different actors. Due to real-world issues such as actor availability, contract negotiations, and advanced age, various characters have been recast across the various Star Trek movies and TV shows. For example, a salary dispute led to Kirstie Alley's Saavik from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan being recast with Robin Curtis for Star Trek III: The Search For Spock. Other supporting or minor characters had been recast, such as casting James Cromwell to play the Star Trek: The Original Series character Zefram Cochrane in Star Trek: First Contact.
It wasn't until J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek movie, however, that the franchise proved it was possible to recast the original crew from Star Trek: The Original Series, which seemed previously blasphemous to longtime Trekkers. The poor reception to Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002 led Paramount...

The original Star Trek Captain, Christopher Pike has been portrayed by four actors in TV and movies, and in two different timelines. Pike predates James T. Kirk (William Shatner) as the Captain of the Enterprise, but his version of Star Trek never made it to series. NBC demanded Star Trek be retooled, and Pike was a casualty of the changes. Yet Captain Pike returned in Star Trek: The Original Series, the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movies, and the Starfleet exemplar has found new vitality in Star Trek on Paramount+.
Captain Pike is defined by the tragedy that befalls him when he is no longer Captain of the Enterprise. What Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) learned about Spock (Ethan Peck) in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1's finale explains Pike's (Sean Kenney) emotional reaction to Spock's (Leonard Nimoy) mutiny in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode, "The Menagerie." Spock risked his Starfleet career to deliver Fleet Captain Pike to Talos IV in "The Menagerie." The telepathic Talosians used their powers to allow Pike to live out his days in an illusion after he was horribly disfigured in a delta ray accident.

Not if you’re one of these famous artists who create and fashion stunning pieces of modern art sculpture not in clay, bronze, brass, or glass, but out of Lego bricks. Yes, Lego bricks like the ones you step on painfully in children’s bedrooms.

No ship or crew gets anywhere without its captain, and in truth, that captain dictates the tone of the journey, not only the success of the mission.
As Captain Christopher Pike, in command of the USS Enterprise on Paramount+'s new series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Anson Mount steps into a role previously taken on by other actors, but never with the fan anticipation that greeted the premiere of this series.
Speaking virtually with TV Fanatic and other outlets on a recent press day, Mount expresses gratitude and wonder at becoming a part of the Star Trek culture and family.
In terms of broadcast history, Pike is the first captain Star Trek floated for the Enterprise. Before William Shatner portrayed Captain James T. Kirk on the premiere in 1966, Jeffrey Hunter played Pike on the first pilot episode, "The Cage."
The pilot didn't test well, and "The Cage" never aired.

No show has mined more canonical information from unused material than "Star Trek." Case in point: The new series "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is based on characters and events from the two-part original series episode "The Menagerie," wherein a non-verbal and wheelchair-using Captain Pike (Sean Kenney) hijacked the Enterprise (with Spock's help) to return to the planet Talos IV where he had gone on a mission a few years prior to his injuries.
