Cutting his chops in the theatre, open mic nights with stand-up comedy, improve comedy and "The Dating Game", Richard moved into acting through a professional Motocross racing career. Along with passions for the game of baseball up through High School. He raced in the first Superbowl of Motocross at the L.A. Coliseum. Comfortable with performance, acting was a natural progression. Growing up in the Hollywood community, which for him was a little on the outskirts of his home town down in the Huntington, Newport and Laguna beach communities. A student of Milton Katselas, Don Richardson, Stella Adler, James Wilson, Sal Romeo. CEC Studios- Charles Conrad, and Peggy Feury, his skills for the craft of acting, and love for it grew.
Regularly influenced early on the sets of Eight is Enough, Waltons, and Fantasy Island. Worked on: Days of our Lives, Santa Barbara, Capitol and ABC's General Hospital on a recurring role as an officer which led him to work in 105 episodes, and has worked in over one hundred commercials since joining the Screen Actors Guild in 1977.
In 1979, Richard was invited to work for 20th Century-Fox Film Corp., within the feature film advertising and marketing department and continued to work on the studio lot or eleven years, active in the departments of Feature Film Project Development/ Production and Distribution. As a top executive assistant/trainee, worked closely with many of the best in the industry, top creative studio Executives: Herb Wallerstein, John Davis (feature film producer), Alan Hirschfield (CEO), Scott Rudin (President of Feature Film Production), Jonathan Dolgen (Senior President of Television), Sherry Lansing (President of Feature film Production), and Michael Levy. Job duties where we made the impossible, possible on a daily basis. Working on productions with Film Creators such as: Lawrence Gordon, Joel Silver, Steven Bochco, David E. Kelley and Glen A. Larson. On the side, also enjoyed the skills of in-home projectionist with many of the top-level executives in film and music.
After leaving TCF, pursued film production, joined the camera department working as a member of the International Photographers Guild, later to be named International Cinematographers Guild Local 600. Years employed as an assistant; second ac, 1st ac and finally making the jump earning his way through the ranks to the position of union camera operator. Working with such esteemed masters in the art of film lighting and photography, Richard Kelley worked daily alongside such greats as: John A. Alonso, Andrzej Bartkowiak, Dante Spinotti, Alexander Witt, Vern Nobles Jr., Jonathan West, Janusz Kaminski, and a long list of others mostly in feature film, but also regularly on some great commercials and television productions.
Through the years studied the art of film production, lighting, screenwriting, (a regular student of Robert McKee), applied study on directing, writing and acting with the very respected mentor/coach; Milton Katselas--teacher and owner of the Beverly Hills Playhouse and Skylight theatre. Development of projects on several professional levels including; producing, directing, writing and editing in the independent world, showcase films, film festivals, industrial films and the video world. Richard Kelley is also an accomplished commercial and portrait photographer with high level skill as an editor on Avid, Adobe Premier and the entire adobe production suite.
With his natural, warm and organic personal approach to acting--as seen in his early work--he is a natural to endless future characters in a variety of feature story genres.
