‘Every Time You Lose Your Mind’: ’90s Alt-Rockers Failure Talk Their Long-Awaited Documentary and Rewriting Their “Tumultuous” Legacy
Image
It’s rare for a band’s second bite of the apple to taste better than the first, but ‘90s alt-rock outfit Failure continues to be one of the few exceptions.

The Los Angeles-based space rockers’ decade-in-the-making documentary, Every Time You Lose Your Mind: A Documentary About Failure, chronicles their early ’90s origin story, beginning with the fated duo of frontman Ken Andrews and multi-instrumentalist Greg Edwards meeting each other through The Recycler’s music classifieds.

Andrews, who took over directorial responsibilities for the doc in the middle of the pandemic, then focuses on the band’s many ups and downs throughout the production of their first three studio LPs, primarily their third record, Fantastic Planet (1996), which would go on to be widely regarded as a masterwork. Butch Vig, who produced Nirvana’s Nevermind, counts it among his top albums of all time.

During Fantastic Planet’s 1995 recording sessions, heroin...

Failure Documentary Every Time You Lose Your Mind Coming to Hulu: Watch Trailer
Image
A long-in-works documentary on the alt-rock band Failure will premiere on Hulu on June 27th. The film, titled Every Time You Lose Your Mind, features interviews with Maynard James Keenan, Hayley Williams, Jason Schwartzman, Tommy Lee, Margaret Cho, the late Steve Albini, and more.

An official description of the documentary reads, “Like a falling satellite blazing across the musical landscape, Failure flamed-out in the late ‘90s – their promising rise derailed by drug addiction and record company inertia. But the pioneering trio left a profound imprint that transcended their affiliation with the LA alt-rock scene. Every Time You Lose Your Mind documents the origins, downfall and rebirth of a band that’s beloved by their peers and multiple generations of fans.”

Singer-guitarist Ken Andrews added, “Our fans have connected with the themes of depression and addiction in our music. The film crystallizes those connections and, ultimately, communicates hope. We’re a...

Image
A long-in-the-works documentary about the alt-rock band Failure — whose three Nineties albums fomented a cult following that eventually sparked an ongoing, decade-long reunion — will finally see release this month.

It’s been seven years since A Perfect Circle last released an album, 2018’s Eat the Elephant, but guitarist Billy Howerdel and singer Maynard James Keenan say that a new album could be on the way.

In a new retrospective interview with Revolver looking back at 25 years of A Perfect Circle, both Howerdel and Keenan addressed the potential for a new album.

Howerdel, who composes most of the band’s music, disclosed that he’s been working on new songs that could end up on the next Apc album. “As I’m writing, sometimes I find myself [thinking], ‘Wow, I really like this, but man, this is fucking sinister,’” said the guitarist. “I’m in a not-sleeping-much and self-discovery mode. When I’m writing music, I’ve been full night-terror, waking up — like, can’t-let-your-mind-rest thing.”

Maynard James Keenan: It May Take “Modern Miracles” to Get Ozzy Osbourne Onstage for Final Show
Image
Tool are one of the bands that will play the upcoming all-star “Back to the Beginning” concert featuring the final performances of Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne. However, singer Maynard James Keenan says it may take “modern miracles” to get Ozzy onstage given the metal icon’s physical limitations.

The day-long concert at Villa Park in Birmingham, England, will also feature mini-sets from Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Pantera, Gojira, Alice in Chains, Halestorm, Mastodon, Lamb of God, Anthrax, and more, leading up to the final performances from Ozzy and Sabbath.

In a new interview with Loudwire Nights (as transcribed by ThePRP), Keenan discussed how Tool became involved in the concert, as well as his concerns for Ozzy’s physical condition at the show.

Keenan performed as part of a tribute to Ozzy during the latter’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction last year.

Headbanging Hayley Williams Joins Deftones for ‘Minerva’ in Nashville
Image
Hayley Williams has been having a blast going on musical side quests across Nashville. She’s joined both Finneas and Cyndi Lauper in recent months. Her latest included a surprise appearance with Deftones, where she joined the band on stage to lend some striking vocals and headbanging to their performance of “Minerva.”

The pop-up doubled as a reunion for Williams and Deftones, who last performed together over a decade ago. In 2010, the Paramore front woman joined the band at Luxembourg’s Rock-a-Field festival for “Passenger,” filling in for Maynard James Keenan.

Deftones Joined Onstage by Paramore’s Hayley Williams for “Minerva” in Nashville: Watch
Image
Deftones‘ set at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Wednesday (March 26th) had a little added star power, with Paramore’s Hayley Williams taking the stage to perform guest vocals on the encore opener “Minerva.”

Williams looked to be in attendance as a fan, posting footage on Instagram from the back of the venue with the other concertgoers. But when it was time for the encore, the Paramore singer headed to the stage to help out with the song from Deftones’ 2003 self-titled album.

The Paramore singer mostly lends backing vocals on the chorus drops, though she’s obviously stoked to be up there, bopping around the stage and dancing to the otherwise tempered, slow-tempo cut (as seen in fan footage below).

It marks the second time Williams has joined Deftones onstage, as she previously sang alongside Chino Moreno and company in 2010 at the Rock-a-Field Festival in Luxembourg.

Tool Allow Rare Livestream of Full Lollapalooza Argentina Set … From a Distance
Image
Tool’s set at Lollapalooza Argentina on Saturday (March 22nd) was livestreamed, marking a rare occasion that the band let one of its full concerts be broadcast on TV or the internet. However, the veteran alt-metal act didn’t allow any close-ups of the performance, only wide angle shots from a good distance away from the stage.

The Buenos Aires concert was streamed via Flow, an Argentinian cable television and internet company, as part of a full slate of streaming performances from Lollapalooza Argentina. While it doesn’t appear that the stream was archived, rips of Tool’s set are popping up on YouTube.

Tool played a nine-song set, including four tunes from 2006’s 10,000 Days. Amazingly, the gig marked the band’s first ever concert in South America, kicking off a run of shows that also includes Lollapalooza festivals in Chile and Brazil.

Lawyer Says 100 Attendees Are Ready to File Lawsuit Against Tool Over Festival Sets
Image
A lawyer who attended the Tool in the Sand festival this past weekend says he’s had roughly 100 people sign up for a potential class-action lawsuit against Tool regarding the band’s performances at the Dominican Republic destination fest.

As previously reported, Tool played two sets at the three-day festival in Punta Cana, one on Friday night (March 7th) and another on Saturday night (March 8th). Video footage showed fans booing and flipping off the band during the second set as they repeated a handful of songs from the night before, after promising “two unique sets.”

Lawyer Stas Rusek, a self-described Tool fan who has seen the band live more than 25 times, was among those disappointed with Tool’s second show of the festival, and put out a call for other attendees to file a class-action lawsuit against the band.

He told Vulture that approximately 100 people have signed up for the potential legal action,...

Tool Apparently Booed for Disappointing Set at Their Own Festival
Image
Tool’s first-ever destination festival took place over the weekend in the Dominican Republic, and it appears that the band was booed at the end of its second show of the fest for not living up to its promise of playing “two unique sets.”

The Tool in the Sand Festival in Punta Cana kicked off on Friday (March 7th), with the band slated to play two shows over two nights, headlining a lineup that also included Primus, Coheed and Cambria, Mastodon, and more.

It seems like the band’s performance on Friday night (March 7th) was well received, as they played a 10-song set that included tracks from all five of their studio albums, including favorites like “Schism,” “Stinkfist,” and “Vicarious.”

The disappointment apparently came at the end of the band’s second show on Saturday night (March 8th), which saw the band play nine songs, four of which they performed the night before.

Tool to Spend Three Months “Organizing Our Ideas” for New Album
Image
After teasing new music for over a year, Tool’s Justin Chancellor has once again assured fans that a new album is on the way. Following their upcoming Latin American tour, he’s revealed that they will “dedicate the next three months” to organizing their ideas in the studio.

The comment came in a new interview with Chancellor by Summa Inferno, in which he described their album-making process as having “a lot of stages.” As it stands now, Tool’s members reportedly “all have ideas… We’ve all shared our individual ideas with each other, and we have a really good pile of stuff.”

But it’s after the “ideas” stage that things get a little more tricky, Chancellor explained. “The really difficult process is when you actually get together and make decisions about how it’s going to end up. And that becomes a little more mathematical, a little...

Maynard James Keenan is mourning the death of his father, Mike Keenan.

The Tool singer shared a touching tribute to his dad on Instagram over the weekend, including several photos and the following eulogy, disclosing that his father passed away “peacefully”:

“My Father, Mike Keenan, also my Wrestling coach and Hs Teacher, passed early yesterday. He went peacefully in his room. And for those of you who knew him, that sounds quite boring. He lived an interesting life. He was Recently described as “Wild and Ungovernable.” Just one example: Over a year ago he was hit by the train in Scottville on his way home from a pow wow. Survived, but refused to go to the hospital for fear they would keep him from going competitive skiing in Helsinki in 7 days. With broken ribs. Totaled the truck. My truck, btw. Hit by the train that only comes through Scottville once a month.

Primus Announce John Hoffman as New Drummer After Open Audition
Image
Primus have revealed that their new drummer is John Hoffman after an open audition that resulted in 6,200 submissions.

The Louisiana-based Hoffman is a relative unknown compared to some of the other finalists that had a chance to fill the slot vacated by Tim “Herb” Alexander, who surprisingly exited the band in October. However, he is a professional drummer who apparently plays more than 250 gigs a year and is known as “the busiest drummer in Shreveport.”

The question came toward the latter part of Beato’s one-hour-plus conversation with Keenan, in which he also discussed his 2025 plans (revealing a new Puscifer album is coming), his thoughts on pop stars like Billie Eilish, and a Mars Volta album that he feels fell short sonically, among other topics.

Jason Statham's 'Crank' Sequel Is Better than the First One
Image
While the age-old adage "less is more" is sound filmmaking advice, the opposite applies to Jason Statham's relentless action movies. A case in point is Crank 2: High Voltage, a balls-to-the-wall action sequel that goes so far over the top that it dwarfs the absurdity of the original to leave a big, fat grin etched on the faces of hardcore Statham fanatics. Critics were also impressed, giving Crank 2 slightly better reviews than its predecessor.

Boasting a wild premise that forces Statham's Chev Chelios into a ticking-clock health scenario, Crank 2's high-voltage electricity derives from the extreme plot, flagrant fight scenes, hyper-violence, morbid humor, kinetic camerawork, Statham's breathless stunt work, and more. With the film recently celebrating its 15th anniversary, it's time to hook up the jumper cables and bring Crank 2: High Voltage back to life.

“On the heels of a wonderful spring & summer of touring and some fabulous plans ahead, it has been a bit bewildering for us that Herb would so abruptly opt out,” Claypool and Lalonde continue. “After several attempts to communicate with Herb, his only response was another email stating that he has ‘lost his passion for playing.’ As disappointing as that is, we respect his choice.”

The statement then goes on to explain how Claypool and Lalonde will handle Primus’ upcoming bookings.

Read Ozzy Osbourne’s Humble Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Speech
Image
On Saturday, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducted Ozzy Osbourne as a solo artist. It was the second time the institution recognized the singer, following his induction as a member of Black Sabbath in 2006.

The honor was long overdue. Osbourne made one of rock’s most incredible comebacks after Black Sabbath fired him in 1979. With the help of guitarist Randy Rhoads, who was posthumously inducted into the Hall in 2021, he recorded energetic, almost gothic rockers like “Crazy Train,” “Mr. Crowley,” and “Flying High Again” that helped him eclipse Sabbath’s career commercially.

Ozzy Osbourne Inducted Into Rock Hall by Electrifying Jack Black Speech and All-Star Performance
Image
Ozzy Osbourne was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday night (October 19th) in Cleveland with a rousing and highly entertaining speech by Jack Black. The Prince of Darkness was also honored with a three-song performance fronted by Maynard James Keenan, Jelly Roll, and Billy Idol.

Jack Black gave an all-time Rock Hall speech, with his face turning beet red as he hilariously screamed his way through a highly animated rundown of Ozzy’s various achievements.

Ozzy himself followed, sitting in a giant leather bat-design chair. The metal icon singled out his late guitarist Randy Rhoads and his wife Sharon during his brief speech.

The all-star performance was next, as Tool’s Maynard James Keenan sang “Crazy Train” alongside Wolfgang Van Halen on lead guitar, with a backing band of Chad Smith on drums, Robert Trujillo on bass, Andrew Watt on rhythm guitar, and Adam Wakeman on keyboards.

Maynard James Keenan: Tool “Made a Mistake” Not Embracing Digital Platforms Sooner
Image
Tool famously kept their music off digital platforms until finally making their catalog available to streaming services in 2019 upon the release of their latest album, Fear Inoculum. Looking back, singer Maynard James Keenan feels it was a big “mistake” for the band not to embrace the digital revolution earlier.

In a new conversation with rock personality Allison Hagendorf (watch below), the Tool vocalist was asked about the band’s decision to keep their music strictly on physical formats while most other music acts readily made their music available on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.

Keenan emphasized that it wasn’t his choice to do so, insisting he had wanted to the band to go the digital route for 20 years, and that his bandmates finally “caved.”

“I feel like we missed the boat. Like it started with downloads, you know, 24 years ago,” Keenan told Hagendorf,...

Zakk Wylde Drops Off Remaining Experience Hendrix Dates to Prep for Ozzy Osbourne Rock Hall Induction
Image
Zakk Wylde is stepping away from the remaining dates of the ongoing “Experience Hendrix” tour as he prepares for Ozzy Osbourne‘s second Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction.

Wylde is a man of many projects, from Black Label Society to Pantera, but the journeyman guitarist can only be in one place at a time. His involvement in Ozzy’s induction — which honors Osbourne’s solo career, including years of work alongside Wylde — has taken precedence over the remaining five shows of the Experience Hendrix tour (October 15th through the 19th).

Tool’s Justin Chancellor Dons Willy Wonka Disguise to Prank Opening Act Onstage: Watch
Image
Tool have made a tradition of pulling a light-hearted prank on their support acts at the end of a tour, and Cali alt rockers Night Verses were the latest to get the treatment.

In a video just posted by Tool on social media, bassist Justin Chancellor and some of the band’s road crew had a surprise ready for Night Verses during their final night supporting Tool’s European tour that wrapped up in late June.

Chancellor donned a mildly terrifying Willy Wonka disguise while his cohorts were wearing massive animal costumes as they collectively invaded the stage during an instrumental breakdown in the set. The members of Night Verses threw some double takes at the bizarre spectacle — Chancellor went centerstage wielding a cane, egging on the drummer and “conducting” the band — though they remained unfazed, crushing this particular crescendo in the song.

It’s quite possible that Night Verses...

Danny Carey Performs in “Psychic Energy” Bodysuit at Tool Show in Paris
Image
Danny Carey sported a new look during Tool’s recent show (June 5th) in Paris, as the drummer wore a form-fitting glow-in-the-dark bodysuit in the style of artist Alex Grey’s “Psychic Energy System” artwork.

Grey is a longtime Tool collaborator, having designed the artwork for Lateralus and 10,000 Days. Carey’s bodysuit was created by Jacob Roanhaus, who also fabricated a similar suit showing a muscular system akin to the Lateralus album cover that Carey sported a few months ago.

Tool shared a brief video of Carey performing in the “Psychic Energy System” suit on Instagram, with fans commenting that the outfit reminded them of Marvel’s Thanos and Infinity Stones, and others remarking that it had a Tron vibe. However, as seen below, it appears to be a direct homage to Grey’s 1980 Psychic Energy System painting, which falls more in line with the chakra system.

The Paris...

Puscifer Unveil New Song and Video “The Algorithm”: Stream
Image
Puscifer have released a new song, “The Algorithm,” and its accompanying music video.

The track was written exclusively for the soundtrack to the American Psycho comic-book series. It made its premiere on Tuesday (May 28th) on SiriuxXM, and now an official music video has been unveiled.

On the metallic side for Puscifer, the song is driven by sharp guitar stabs and a steady mid-tempo groove. And yes, the track title is a reference to “The Algorithm” as we know it in social media terms. Maynard James Keenan is infamously anti-smartphone when it comes to concerts, even banning the audience from using them at shows, and here he and guitarist Mat Mitchell lay down their full thesis on “dopamine addiction through habitual social media use,” per Puscifer’s press release.

“Our approach to writing ‘The Algorithm’ was not to delicately peel back the layers of the onion, but instead, to take an axe to it,...

Tool Give Surprise Performance at A Perfect Circle-Puscifer-Primus Show
Image
Maynard James Keenan has been celebrating his 60th birthday all month with two of his bands — A Perfect Circle and Puscifer — along with Primus on the “Sessanta” tour. On Saturday night (April 20th) at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, fans were treated to all three of Keenan’s bands when Tool gave a surprise performance toward the end of the concert.

The tour usually has a no-video policy until the last song of the night, which is Puscifer’s “Grand Canyon,” but Keenan said from the stage that he would permit filming of the next song because he had “picked up some strays” to join him onstage. At that point, Tool’s Danny Carey, Adam Jones, and Justin Chancellor walked out to the delight of the fans.

Maynard James Keenan on New Tool Album: “We Can’t Drag This Out Another 14 Years”
Image
Tool are notorious for taking their sweet time between albums, especially the 13 years between 2006’s 10,000 Days and 2019’s Fear Inoculum. Now, even singer Maynard James Keenan is insisting that the band can’t wait that long to put out the next one.

“Tool is a more complicated beast with a lot of egos and a lot of other things going on in our lives,” Keenan told Metal Hammer in a new interview. “But all the creativity’s there, the songs and the ideas can flow and the arguments ensue.”

He continued, “As soon as we get past the arguments, we can get shit done! [Laughs] I think we could do it more efficiently. And I think everyone’s on the same page that we have to get through that, because we can’t drag this out another 14 years.”
