2025 Made in NY Awards to Honor Darren Aronofsky, Michelle Buteau, Tracy Morgan and Thomas J. O’Donnell (Exclusive)
Image
The Made in NY Awards have announced Darren Aronofsky, Michelle Buteau, Tracy Morgan, and Thomas J. O’Donnell, president of Local 817 International Brotherhood of Teamsters, as the honorees for the upcoming 2025 ceremony.

Earlier this year, Mome presented a Made in NY award to producer Celia Costas at the 45th Annual New York Women in Film & Television Muse Awards.

Created in 2006 by Mome, the Made in NY awards shine a light on the film and television artists who bring the streets and iconic locations of New York City to screens around the world and encourage global audiences to visit, work, and live here.

Hosted by New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment Commissioner Pat Swinney Kaufman, the Made in NY Awards ceremony will come on the heels of the 23rd Tribeca Festival. The ceremony will take place June 16 at the mayor’s official residence, Gracie Mansion.

Sweetened New York Production Incentives A Go As State Budget Passes
Image
The delayed New York State budget has been signed and sealed by Gov. Kathy Hochul with expanded incentives for film and television production. The news comes at the close of a frenetic week following Donald Trump’s bombshell proposal Sunday for tariffs on content produced outside the U.S.

California is working on a major expansion of its incentives. A plan unveiled by Trump’s Special Ambassador to Hollywood, Jon Voight, includes new federal tax credits for U.S. productions in addition to any state programs. But that’s being considered alongside a 120% import tax, which has panicked the film industry in the U.S. and globally. The administration has said no final decisions have been made and it’s unclear where this is headed.

Meanwhile, the sweetened New York package has been bumping around since last year. Gov. Hochul’s proposed budget was signed off on by the Assembly and the State Senate,...

'The Batman' Spinoff 'The Penguin' Boosted NYC Economy by Over $100 million
Image
The drug war between Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) and Sofia Falcone (Cristin Millioti) in The Penguin may have blown a literal hole in Gotham City, the show itself has been a major boon for Gotham's real-life counterpart, New York City. While critics and audiences sung the praises of the show when it was released earlier this year, and guilds and awards bodies are prepping to give the show all the awards in the world next year, New York City's Mayor has praised the show for bolstering the city's economy.

According to statistics released by the Mayor's Office of Media & Entertainment, The Penguin shooting in New York contributed over $134.7 million to the city. Calling all box office junkies, prepare to get nerdy, because the figure has been broken down into detailed categories. Over $73 million went to the wages of over 2,200 local cast and crew. Another $60.8 million went towards local economic activity.

HBO’s ‘The Penguin’ Contributed Nearly $135 Million to New York City Economy
Image
The Penguin may be one of Batman’s greatest villains, but it turns out Oswald Cobblepot is a hero for New York City’s economy.

According to the Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment, the HBO series contributed over 134.7 million during filming, citing internal data from Warner Bros. Discovery.

That investment included over $73 million in wages to more than 2,200 local cast and crew, $60.8 million in local economic activity, $6.3 million on location fees and permits, $5.4 million on props and set dressing, $5.3 million on transportation and car rentals, $2.1 million on local catering and $1.5 million on hotels and lodging.

The drama, which filmed for 112 days around New York, including all five NYC boroughs, as well as in Westchester County and on Long Island, earned the “Made in NY” production title – an honor granted only to projects filmed 75% or more in New York.

We're over the moon that #MadeinNY series "The Penguin" was predominantly shot in NYC,...

‘Made in NY’ Awards Ceremony Returns After 10-Year Hiatus (Exclusive)
Image
The “Made in NY” Awards ceremony will return this fall after a decade of handing out the honors behind the scenes.

Created in 2006 by the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, the “Made in NY” Awards celebrate excellence in New York City’s creative community and recognize the achievements of individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to NYC’s entertainment and digital media industries.

Prior recipients of the “Made in NY” award include 2024 Academy Award nominees Noah Baumbach, Danielle Brooks, Robert De Niro and Jeffrey Wright, as well as Awkwafina, Alex Borstein, Tina Fey, Caroline Hirsch, “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” Spike Lee, Audra McDonald, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Nas, Rosie Perez and “Sesame Street.”

“The Industry Is Not Back”: Bad News From Hollywood Crews
Image
On March 4, major Hollywood crew unions began negotiating their health and pension benefits with studios and streamers, with Hollywood Teamsters head Lindsay Dougherty saying, “We will strike if we have to” during the talks. But some Los Angeles-area crewmembers say that, in the aftermath of the writers’ and actors’ walkouts in 2023, there doesn’t seem to be that much work to halt if their own stoppage is called.

Caught in a brutal industry contraction amid the demise of Peak TV, crewmembers describe an anemic return to production after the strikes, which is exacerbating problems for those who already had significantly fewer opportunities to work in 2023.

“There hasn’t been any real work,” says one location manager based in L.A., who didn’t work for seven and a half months during and after the strikes. “The industry is not back. What’s back is a few things that are doing...

Another day, another schedule for the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Next up is Day 3 - Saturday, July 14th - which is just about as chock-full of events for the horror crowd as Friday the 13th!

Ifp To Stream 2011 Filmmaker Conference
Did you miss the Filmmaker Conference at Independent Film Week last month? Me too – I managed to catch a few panels, but I spent most of the week running around, working, and attending other Ifw events (as evidenced by my photo blogs here, here, and here).

Luckily, Ifp will streaming the entire conference available to members. One new video will be added to ifp.org every weekday this month. Membership levels start at $35, which for roughly 30 hours of film industry education (and tons of other benefits) is not a bad deal.

One video is already online – a case study of Sundance Audience Award winning documentary Buck featuring director Cindy Meehl, producer Julie Goldman, editor Toby Shimin, associate producer Sofia Santana, line producer Alice Henty, and co-executive producer and Back Allie Films president Andrea Meditch.

Other panels coming soon:

Comic-Con 2011: Full Schedule for Sunday July 24th
Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.
