Sudhir Mishra’s films are intimate human dramas that illuminate the politics of everyday life and are affected by the forces of socio-political reactionism. His early cinematic creations tackled the rejection of the values, forms, performance modes, and the style of the mainstream, commercial cinema with privileged entertainment values, spectacular display, and melodrama. His out-of-the-box thought process has helped him to establish aesthetic conventions and modes of production of the Hindi film industry, and has also challenged the boundaries between what is alternative and mainstream.
What Sudhir Mishra created was a vision of cinema as an expressive art form, an inspirational form, and a sense of connectedness to a larger and serious international and niche national artistic enterprise that is motivated by the drive to know and represent the world adequately. His films did not shy away from expressing reality in its broadest sense, highlighting varied aesthetic forms, demonstrating, and...

Let me start by saying this: movies, for me, start with Aamir Khan. As a kid, one of my earliest memories is of the actor wearing a white cap in Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahi. All I wanted since then was that cap. And as soon as he fell crossing the finish line in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, I knew it was Pehla Nasha, a song that defines my love for the man, and, in turn, the start of my love for this visual medium.
I wouldn’t describe myself as a fan so much as someone who felt like he was the actor. People at home still call me “Aamir.” So, with his latest film Sitaare Zameen Par reminding me once again why he remains unmatched, I decided to make a list of my favorite movies starring Aamir Khan, who, in my honest opinion, is the greatest superstar Bollywood has ever seen.

Celebrating 2007’s Dharm, Subhash K Jha revisits Bhavna Talwar’s excellent drama and we hear from the director with her thoughts about the Oscar’s controversy.
To miss this movie on the true meaning of religion is a crime for any cineaste. How much poorer one would be if one allowed this penetrating masterpiece to pass by without a standing ovation! Debutante director Bhavna Talwar paints a map of the human heart in confident bold vibrant but gentle strokes. Varanasi, the city of holy dreams and unholy nightmares, and the clash between old-world values and new-world connivances, has seldom been captured with such exquisite and tender splendor. Straddling this world of colossal pain and redemption as defined by the individual’s desires and emotions, is Pundit Chaturvedi (Pankaj Kapur), a potbellied, bare-torsoed symbol of religiosity who could easily have become a parody in lesser hands. In the first half-hour of...

The name is Bond, Ruskin Bond. A lot of this softspoken, articulate fictioneer’s work has been taken to the big screen, notably Vishal Bharadwaj’s The Blue Umbrella and 7 Khoon Maaf.
There’s a quaint wintry feeling to Vishal Bharadwaj’s adaptation of Ruskin Bond’s The Blue Umbrella that comes not from knowing-it-all about filmmaking but from entering the dark tunnel of non-knowing, to explore an uncharted territory and emerge into a light that’s illuminating and unexperienced. This is the spirit in which Bharadwaj enters the world of the child Biniya, played by Shreya Sharma, who is as brilliant as Shweta Prasad was in Vishal’s other film about the unpredictable fantasy world of the young in Makdee. The Blue Umbrella is about the world of the young, but not a film about children at all. What is The Blue Umbrella about – a fragile fable, a...

Shahid Kapoor On Kabir Singh’s Impact ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Shahid Kapoor is one of the most celebrated actors in the Indian film industry. He is an actor in multiple genres, having proven himself in romance, action, thriller, and whatnot. Kapoor, the son of Pankaj Kapur and Neelima Azeem, has won three Filmfare awards during his career. Over the years, he has proven his versatility in movies such as Haider, Vivaah, Kaminey, and more. However, one movie that completely changed fans’ perceptions of him was Kabir Singh.
While he had performed various roles before this movie, a few fans still consider Kapoor to be that chocolate boy from the past. However, after Kabir Singh, even haters had to accept Shahid’s range as an actor. Released in 2019, the movie was directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and starred Kiara Advani opposite Shahid. While the movie was well-received, the character Kabir was criticized for his toxicity.

The series is based on the book Flight Into Fear: The Captain’s Story by Devi Sharan, who was the captain of the hijacked flight, and journalist Srinjoy Chowdhury. Around the turn of the century, modern reimaginings of Shakespeare had reached a fever pitch. Audiences were rediscovering the Bard's work through a string of stylish Hollywood films ranging from Baz Luhrmann's bombastic “Romeo + Juliet” to Michael Almereyda's gen-x-courting “Hamlet” to fun teen comedies like “10 Things I Hate About You.” It wasn't long before the trend reached the Indian film industry, which had previously produced only a small selection of Shakespeare adaptations. The charge was led by Vishal Bhardwaj, who received widespread acclaim for 2003's “Maqbool,” his violent take on “Macbeth” featuring Irrfan Khan in the lead role. Transposing the Scottish Play's power struggles to 21st-century Mumbai, Bhardwaj takes a haunting approach to the material, leaning into the bloodshed while playing with the supernatural moodiness and psychological torment of its protagonist. Bhardwaj would continue his Shakespeare trilogy with “Omkara” (“Othello”) in 2006 and “Haider” (“Hamlet”) in 2014, both...

New Delhi, Aug 12 (Ians) The cult classic ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’ which was released four decades ago, in 1983, stands as an enduring testament to the power of satire and humour, coupled with social commentary on corruption and media, in the Indian cinema.
Directed by Kundan Shah, and starring an ensemble cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur, Satish Shah, late Satish Kaushik, Bhakti Barve and Neena Gupta, the movie was a dark satire on the rampant corruption in Indian politics, bureaucracy, news media and business.
It still remains a timeless classic because of its razor-sharp wit and incisive take on corruption, politics, and societal hypocrisy.
Produced by National Film Development Corporation of India (Nfdc), the film’s narrative revolves around the misadventures of two bumbling photographers, Vinod Chopra (played by Naseeruddin), and Sudhir Mishra (played by Ravi).

Actor Shahid Kapoor has said that he was concerned about his father and veteran actor Pankaj Kapur judging his choice to become a hero. “My dad is Pankaj Kapur. The fact that I wanted to be a hero was because of my dad. I often wondered will he judge me for my choice of becoming an actor. One does get affected by what ones parents do,” the actor said.
Shahid said his mom (Neelima Azeem) is a phenomenal dancer and actor, while his dad is a legend as an actor.
“My dad was supportive, but there were times when I could make out that he was not very happy with a film or the work that I did,” he said.
“He would not make it very obvious but with your family, you know. So whenever he does call me, I know that he’s really liked my work because he’s true to the art.

Bollywood actor and author Ashutosh Rana found the idea of making ‘Bheed’ in black and white quite apt and said that one cannot show a tragedy in colour. He related the entire idea with the Big Bang theory.
He shared his perspective on the lockdown and who turned out to be the real heroes during the times of adversity.
In conversation with Ians during the promotion of ‘Bheed’, he said: “If you learn about the Big Bang, you will understand that there was first darkness. Then, an explosion happened and light started to spread. So, the story of creation and destruction that happens in our lives begins with ‘shvet’ and ‘shyam’ (white and black). When we cross this catharsis of black and white, our world finally becomes a rainbow. The colours come and the indigo is formed.”

After “Mulk” (2018), “Article 15” (2019), “Thappad” (2020) and “Anek” (2022), filmmaker Anubhav Sinha is back with “Bheed,” another hard-hitting film that shines a light on the fabric of Indian society.
The film is set during the 2020 Indian pandemic lockdown and tells the poignant story of migrant workers stranded without basic necessities while trying to go home to their villages. Shot in black and white, it is deliberately evocative of the 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent into India and Pakistan when people were uprooted from their homes in the largest migration in history.
“When the pandemic hit, people were seeking help on Twitter. Everybody had different strengths so we were helping each other and, and I really got sucked into it. And that was the time when I felt that this film had to be made, this period of time has to be recorded, and I didn’t want it to be just a Coronavirus film,...

The film, directed by Anubhav Sinha of ‘Article 15’ fame, is completely in monochrome and tells the story from India’s recent history of the first nationwide lockdown after Covid-19 was recognised as a health emergency in 2020 and how the migrant workers were ill treated by the authorities as they walked miles for days together at a stretch to reach their homes.
The trailer, which is under 3 minutes in length, starts off with a voice-over of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s famous address to the nation wherein he called for a complete nationwide lockdown, which became the harshest lockdown in the entire world. The corresponding imagery shows migrant workers struggling and getting their hands on whatever available resources they could arrange as they brave police brutality and humiliating treatment by the authorities in their own homeland.

Depicting the hard-hitting reality of social disparity at the times when borders were drawn within the country, Bheed, the Anubhav Sinha directed film starring Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekaer, is a story of the time when migrant workers were stranded without necessities, trying to find their way home in the middle of a nationwide lockdown.
What makes this so unique is that Bhushan Kumar and Anubhav Sinha’s upcoming social drama Bheed was filmed entirely in black and white.
To reveal more about the film, the makers have released a teaser, which is very intriguing. It features pictures, which look like they are from the 1947 India Partition are shockingly from the 2020 India Lockdown reminding similar times when people were uprooted from their homes.

Known for playing different kinds of roles in films such as ‘No One Killed Jessica’, ‘Shaitan’, ‘NH10’, ‘Ungli’ or recently in ‘Lost, actor Neil Bhoopalam believes in breaking the stereotypes and exploring distinct characters every time he takes up a new project.
As he mentioned: “There is a fair amount of mindfulness that one approaches work with. At the same time, work is work, so if I am fortunate enough to perform in stories where I get my creative kicks and that is a well-made project helmed by very creative people then it’s a win-win situation.”
In the movie, ‘Lost’, he was in a long-distance relationship with the lead actress Yami Gautam’s on-screen character Vidhi Sahani and the actor said that in today’s time because of technology such relationships are more practically possible and thus made the story of the film more relatable.

Anubhav Sinha’s upcoming social drama “Bheed,” starring Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar, is a rarity in contemporary Indian cinema in that it is made completely in black and white.
Images from the film, which is set during the 2020 Indian pandemic lockdown and tells the hard-hitting story of migrant workers stranded without basic necessities while trying to go home to their villages, are deliberately evocative of the 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent into India and Pakistan and people were uprooted from their homes in the largest migration in history.

Lost (Zee5)
Directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury
From the director of the game-changing Pink comes a political thriller that is as much a clutter-breaker as Pink, though the concerns are not just about women here. The rot runs much deeper and , well, the female hero is not too safe here.
Being a crime reporter in Kolkata (or anywhere) is not a safe profession for anyone, man or woman. Nidhi Sahani has thrown all caution to the wimps. The goons who tail her, and her beloved grandpa (played by everyone’s favourite patriarch Pankaj Kapoor) look as dangerous as the watchmen of a housing colony.
But here is the thing: sinisterness is not a signature tune, not in this film. Danger lurks in the most ostensibly innocuous places in Lost. Director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury travels through Kolkata’s inner bowel. The master lensman Avik Mukhopadhyay brings Kolkata to life as pivotal...
